# How It Occurs and How to Avoid It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Stoke Prior

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? Then put this page aside a moment, leave the ignition and engine off, and phone 0333 366 0103.

Around Stoke Prior, finding it before your engine runs usually means a drain and a thorough flush where it stands.

The rest of this page covers why it takes place and how to make sure it doesn't — useful if you're reading before it has happened.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle, and its separate tank

Diesel feeds the motor — but many modern diesels driven round Stoke Prior and Stoke Heath carry a second fluid as well.

The exhaust, not the engine, is where AdBlue ends up: dosed into the fumes to fresh it, from its own tank.

Each tank has its own filler.

Many of cars have a single flap for the two, while some put the AdBlue filler to the boot or under the bonnet.

Topping up the diesel side at the petrol pump happens all the time.

The AdBlue side is topped up far less commonly, usually from a bottle, and usually by somebody who has to stop and think where it goes.

That gap is where the slip lives.

## Stoke Prior: how AdBlue in the diesel tank occurs

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

Haste comes from the warning. The car tells you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank puts it into limp mode — so the top-up happens quickly, before work on a drive off Shaw Lane, or on the way home in the car park outside The Boat And Railway.

Next, the hand reaches for the cap it knew on the old motor — since a rental car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers somewhere your last one did not.

Nothing stops the tip after it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

Whether it occurs in Stoke Wharf or the middle of Stoke Prior, it's the same few seconds.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Before you tip anything, whether on a driveway in Sharpway Gate or a forecourt around Stoke Prior, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap normally is not. Read it rather than going by position.

- The size. On many cars the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- A label inside the fuel flap often shows which fuel goes where, on many vehicles. Check for it.

- In your boot or under the bonnet: that's where your filler sits if it is not by your diesel cap, and the handbook tells you which.

- The previous driver knows. Check as you collect a rental or company car — from Bromsgrove's car park, say — rather than once the warning comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

Wherever across Worcestershire the light comes on, this is a routine for that day.

- Turn off after you park — level ground, motor off, and never in a rush by Wall's Road on the verge.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it does the trick.

- The diesel cap stays on. When both sit under a flap, make sure it's shut before the bottle comes up.

- Stop when that tank fills or the bottle runs dry; until then, tip gently using the own spout.

- Before you start your car, shut the cap and check again that your diesel cap never came off.

Spot at stage two or three that it has already gone into your diesel side? Then stop just there.

Leave out step five altogether.

## Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Stoke Prior?

Do not start your engine: that's how the short order of things begins.

Keep the ignition off too, since on many diesels switching it on alone runs your fuel pump.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where the fuel is pulled from — so don't top up with diesel to thin it.

At a forecourt — Shell, Esso or any other — the staff will normally help push the car away, when you ask.

On your own drive around Stoke Prior? Then the car remains put.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if the engine has already run.

Stoke Prior lies under a mile from the M5; on it, use the first exit.

Distance counts — a quick hop across Stoke Prior is a smaller job than heading under 10 miles towards Worcester — so say roughly how far it went.

## What takes place when our engineers arrive around Stoke Prior

Our van comes to the vehicle anywhere it stopped — your own driveway, near Aztec Adventure, or by Stoke Prior First School.

Our technicians ask what was put in, roughly how much, and if it has run, because the answers settle the work and our quote.

Nobody sets off before you have had our quote by phone.

The system is then rinsed thoroughly, once that tank is cleared.

Not like petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and eats at some fuel-system metals, and none of that washes away unaided. Hence it matters more.

The filter flushed or, if it must be, replaced; clean diesel in; then a test of the car.

After that our engineers start it and confirm it runs smoothly before leaving.

Unstarted cars usually need a half-hour job after arrival. The equipment is fine on a busy filling station, and hushed enough for a residential street late at night.

Paying happens on the day, not upfront, and you receive the documents an insurer wants: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours while we are on the way.
