# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Stoke: Why It Happens and How to Stop It

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your motor and your ignition off and phone 0333 366 0103.

Caught before the motor runs, it's normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is in Stoke.

The remainder of this page explains why it occurs and how to make sure it doesn't — useful if you're reading ahead of time.

## AdBlue in a diesel car, and its separate tank

Diesel goes to the motor — yet plenty of newer diesels driven round Stoke and Stoke Park carry a second liquid too.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Different tanks, different fillers.

Plenty of motors have a single flap for the two, while others put the AdBlue filler to the boot or under the bonnet.

At the pump, the diesel side is topped up all the time.

The AdBlue side is topped up far less frequently, normally from a bottle, and normally by a person who has to stop and think where it goes.

The mistake lives in that gap.

## How AdBlue in the diesel tank happens around Stoke

Carelessness seldom explains it. Instead is three things lining up together.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and if it runs out completely, the vehicle drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Hipswell Highway before work, or in the car park outside The Millpool on the way home.

The old car's filler is where your hand reaches — but a rental car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers elsewhere. That is a second factor: a strange car.

Nothing stops the pour once it has started, since a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

It's a few seconds, be it in Binley or right in the heart of Stoke.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Check these first, on a forecourt around Stoke or a drive out in Lower Stoke. A few seconds, that's all.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap usually isn't. Read it rather than going by where it sits.

- Many cars fit AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.

- Open the flap and check for a label — plenty of vehicles show which goes in each filler right there.

- The handbook. If the filler is not by your diesel cap, it's in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Collecting a hire or company car, say at the car park at Coventry? Ask the person who drove it last before you set off, not when the light comes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever in West Midlands that is.

- Stop somewhere level, motor off, with time in hand — never hurried on the side of Allard Way.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after finding the AdBlue filler and reading it. Daft, yes, but it does the trick.

- The two under a single flap? Then make sure the lid on the diesel side is still shut before raising the bottle.

- Slowly is best, through the bottle's own spout, till it is full or the bottle runs out.

- Before starting your car, shut the cap and check again that the diesel cap was never came off.

Find during the second or third step that AdBlue went in the wrong tank? That is where you stop.

Don't go on to step five.

## Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Stoke?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start the motor.

On plenty of diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so do not switch the car on.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where the fuel is sucked from — so don't top up with diesel to thin it.

If you are at a forecourt, whether it is the Gulf or the Shell, ask the attendants to help push the vehicle away from the petrol pump.

If you're on your own drive around Stoke, leave the car where it sits.

If the motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off.

Stoke lies under 3 miles from the M69; there, use the first junction.

A short hop across Stoke is a smaller job than a run towards Coventry, under 3 miles away, and so tell us about how far it went.

## Stoke: what happens when our technicians arrive

By Richard Lee Primary School, near Meredith Road Baptist Church or on your own driveway: wherever the car has stopped, our engineers come to it.

Which fluid got in, the amount, and whether it ran: our engineers ask since those answers set the work and price.

You get that quote by phone, before anyone sets off.

Your system is then flushed thoroughly, once the tank is emptied.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why that counts more with AdBlue than with petrol.

Your filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the car is tested.

Next our technicians fire it up and check it runs correctly before we go.

Unstarted cars mostly need a half-hour visit after the moment we arrive. The equipment is safe on a busy filling station, and quiet enough for a residential street late at night.

Your insurer usually wants an engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and you get both once the job is done. Payment comes on the day, with no money upfront.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours while we're on the way.

## Stoke and West Midlands: AdBlue drains across the area

Church End and Stoke Aldermoor are among the towns around Stoke, a residential suburb, that the same vans cover, throughout CV postcodes.

Fastest of all: give a CV2 5 postcode to the van.

Shifting your car is not needed.

Our technicians drain it where it is — a side street near Macdonald Road Methodist Church, a lay-by on the way to Copsewood trees, a driveway.

Guessing won't help behind St Bartholemew's, close to a boundary, or somewhere hard to describe; phone and ask.

## The short version for Stoke people

Always, the cap; after that, the tip.

If AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank all the same, leave it off and phone 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel empties it where it sits, anywhere around West Midlands.
