# AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Stoneclough? Keep It Switched Off

AdBlue in your diesel tank? Then leave the motor off — and your ignition too.

Urea dissolved in water is what AdBlue is.

Being water-based, it will not ignite and never combines with diesel; trouble only comes when the pump starts drawing it.

Caught before the motor has been run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Stoneclough.

Before you do anything else, call 0333 366 0103.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Stoneclough: the first few minutes

Do these:

- Keys out — then no one can switch anything on.

- Put your hazards on if you are at all close to moving traffic.

- Which fluid, and roughly how much quantity? Hang on to the bottle or your receipt, and we will know.

- Tell us a postcode starting M26 1, or whichever street is nearest, and the van reaches you directly — so call from wherever you are.

Do not do these:

- Don't start the motor, even for a moment to shift your car.

- Do not switch the ignition on. On many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

- Don't top up with diesel to thin it. AdBlue does not mix in diesel; it separates out.

- Keep the vehicle where it is instead of driving it anywhere, even a short stretch along Vale Avenue.

- By the road, do not try emptying it on your own.

Rolling your car away from the pumps is a job for attendants to help with, whichever Stoneclough forecourt you're on, the Esso included.

On the drive, the car remains just as it is.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

AdBlue is made for your exhaust, not your engine.

Stored in a dedicated tank, it's squirted into the exhaust to clean the gases.

Nothing in it is meant to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is built to handle it.

Tipped in with the diesel, it keeps separate instead of mixing — quite different from fuel.

It is heavier than diesel, and so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of the tank, which is where the pickup pulls fuel from.

Once your system runs, the AdBlue is first to be pulled through. Before then it waits beneath the diesel, and that is how a car topped up in Kearsley last night and not switched on remains the simple case, provided no one touches your key.

Once it is pulled in, the damage takes two forms.

It eats at some metals found in fuel systems, working on whatever it touches until it is removed from the system. And once the water goes, the urea forms crystals that block filters and settle in narrow channels.

If the AdBlue has reached the lines, waiting overnight in Stoneclough makes things worse. In that tank alone, waiting does nothing.

Water lubricates nothing. The injection pump and each injector depend on diesel flowing through them, and so the water part damages them by itself.

## Why AdBlue in a diesel is commonly more serious than petrol

Petrol pumped into a diesel on Shell's forecourt leaves the fuel thin — that's the whole fault.

Mixed through your diesel and sitting still, it's harmless at that stage; using the engine is the harm.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the liquid as such is plainly the wrong one.

It does not burn, and so it can't just be run through.

It doesn't stay mixed, so it can't be diluted. And crystals and corrosion do not wash out with the next tank of fuel. That's why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting your engine "to see" costs more here than almost anywhere else, whether your car is in Ringley Fold or the middle of Stoneclough.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

Anywhere in Greater Manchester your car has stopped, an unstarted motor leaves the AdBlue yet inside the tank: the simplest bit of a fuel system to empty.

## How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank in Stoneclough

It's not on purpose. Plenty of cars keep the AdBlue inlet beside the diesel one, occasionally behind one flap, and muddling them up is easy after dark.

Mostly it occurs with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the drive, not at the pump.

Mostly, it takes place in one of a couple of familiar ways.

Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard warns, and outside St Saviour CofE Primary School, Ringley the refill is hurried.

A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Hulme Road.

Or someone unfamiliar with that flap refills the vehicle after dark, stopped in the car park by The Horseshoe.

The least known vehicles get it most — rentals, new ones, company ones, and the other vehicle of a family with both fuel types.

Wherever you are in Stoneclough or the rest of Greater Manchester, it is the same error and the same first answer: leave the car off.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank in Stoneclough, and your engine started?

The AdBlue has left your tank, then.

It's been drawn through your filter and the lines, and if your motor ran for any time, it has reached your high-pressure pump and the injectors.

Rough running, smoke, dropping power, dashboard lights or cutting out: any may appear, maybe midway across Stoneclough or returning from Ringley Wood.

No starting it again to check: pull over when it is safe, then switch it off.

Each start pulls more of it through.

Stoneclough sits under a mile from the Kearsley Spur; if you were on it, leave by the first junction and stop safely rather than driving on.

How far it went counts. A couple of hundred yards across Stoneclough to the car park by St Saviour is a very different job from a run towards Salford, under 10 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the system with every mile.

Roughly how far it had come is worth telling us.

Once the motor has run, the flush includes more, and all of it is done where the car has ended up.

Noticed quickly, it very seldom leaves lasting damage.

## What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve around Stoneclough?

A street beside Emmanuel Church, a driveway, a lay-by or a filling station: anywhere your car has stopped around Stoneclough, our technicians travel to it.

Which fluid got in, roughly the quantity, and if your engine has been run: we check before all else, because those decide the work.

On the spot, the tank is then emptied, and both the polluted diesel and the urea come out as one.

Residue from AdBlue will not flush away by itself, and so the fuel system gets a careful flush, which counts far more here than for petrol.

Fresh diesel goes in once your filter is cleaned — or swapped, if it needs to be — and after that your car is tested.

Not run? Then expect about half an hour once we are there for most jobs.

Explosion-proof pumps make a live forecourt safe to work on, and they run quiet enough not to disturb the neighbours at night.

Lastly, the system is bled with clean diesel.

Then our technicians start it and you drive off, whether from a parking space by Kearsley or a drive around Stoneclough.

We make sure it runs properly on new diesel before we go.

Our technicians do it all wherever the car has ended up, and it never needs to go to a garage.

You get a VAT invoice and an engineer report after that, which is what insurers ask for.

Wherever your car stands — your driveway at home, a residential street, a car park, a filling station — we drain it on the spot, and there's no need to take it to us; that suits Stoneclough, a residential suburb, well.

## What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out around Stoneclough?

Since the callouts vary, a single figure would not be honest.

What changes the cost is, first of all, whether the motor has been running and for how long; then how much AdBlue went in; and finally where the vehicle is and whether our van can get to it safely, which is easier on an open drive than in a tight spot behind Holy Trinity.

Ahead of any figure, never afterwards, every call from Stoneclough begins with three questions: the fuel, the quantity, plus if it ran.

The replies turn a range into a straight quote.

You get that quote on the phone, before anyone heads out, and you pay on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront.

Look at your policy while we are on the way: many include misfuelling cover.

## Still alongside the car around Stoneclough?

In that case, do nothing — that is the most helpful move there is.

Phone 0333 366 0103: AdBlue, roughly how much, and whether the engine ran are everything our technicians need. Petrol in Diesel handles the remainder throughout Greater Manchester, Stoneclough too.
