# Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Stoneferry: Why It Occurs

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? Then put this page down for now, leave your ignition and motor off, and ring 0333 366 0103.

In Stoneferry, finding it before the motor runs normally leaves draining and a thorough flush where it stands.

Reading before the event? In that case the rest explains how it comes about and how to stop it happening at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor, and its separate tank

No single fluid but two: that is how plenty of modern diesels near Stoneferry and Mile House carry, with diesel feeding your engine.

AdBlue's own tank keeps it, and from there it is sent to your exhaust, and there a spray treats the fumes.

Different tanks, separate fillers.

Other vehicles keep the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; plenty of others place the two side by side behind one flap.

Filling the diesel side at the pump happens all the time.

Far less commonly, the AdBlue side is topped up — mostly from a bottle, by someone thinking about where it goes.

That gap is where the error lives.

## How AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place around Stoneferry

It is hardly ever carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

On a driveway off Mayville Avenue before work, or in the car park outside O'Sullivans heading home: that is where the hurried top-up takes place. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue gets low the vehicle warns you, and once it is gone, limp mode follows.

Then the car is unfamiliar. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and the hand gets to for the cap it would have used on the old one.

A spouted bottle finds no obstacle at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. And so the tip, after begun, keeps on.

Summergangs or the middle of Stoneferry: it is the same few seconds in both.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Before you pour anything, whether on a drive in Sutton Ings or a forecourt around Stoneferry, check these. They take a few seconds.

- Read the cap rather than going by position: AdBlue ones are often blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps normally are not.

- Check the size: the smaller filler neck is, on many vehicles, the AdBlue one.

- A label inside your fuel flap frequently says which fuel goes where, on plenty of motors. Look for it.

- The handbook. If the filler isn't by the diesel cap, it's in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Picking up a hire or company car, say at the car park at Hull? Check with the person who drove it last before you set off, rather than once the light comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever around East Riding of Yorkshire that is.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with the motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Chamberlain Road.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once you find the AdBlue filler and read it. Silly, perhaps, yet it does the trick.

- The diesel cap stays on. Where the two share a flap, make sure it is closed before lifting the bottle.

- Gently is best, through the bottle's own spout, till it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check once more. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start your car.

Discover during the second or third stage that AdBlue went into the wrong tank? That is where you stop.

Never go on to step five.

## Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Stoneferry?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start the engine.

Leave your ignition off as well, because on plenty of diesels it by itself runs the pump.

Do not top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where your fuel is drawn from.

At a forecourt — Shell, another forecourt nearby or another — the attendants will normally help roll the vehicle clear, if you ask.

On your own drive in Stoneferry? So the vehicle stays put.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if the motor has already run.

On the M180, under 15 miles from Stoneferry, that means the next exit.

Distance counts — a quick hop across Stoneferry makes a smaller job than heading under 3 miles to Kingston upon Hull — so tell us roughly how far it went.

## Our arrival in Stoneferry, and what occurs next

Outside Stoneferry Primary School, close to Goals Hull or on your own drive: wherever the car has stopped, we come to it.

We ask what got in, roughly how much, and whether it has run, because the replies determine the work and the quote.

The quote is given over the phone, ahead of any van leaving.

After that: a drain, then a full flush of the entire system.

Much more than with petrol, it matters here: the crystals build up, some metals are attacked, and none of that washes away on its own, however long it is left.

Your filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the car is tested.

Before we leave, we fire it up and confirm that it's running smoothly.

If the engine hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

The insurer will ask for the engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and you get both once this job is done. Payment comes on the day, with no money upfront.

While we travel, have a look at your policy; many carry cover for misfuelling.

Fastest of all: quote a HU8 8 postcode for our van.

Your car doesn't need to shift.

A drive, a lay-by on the way to Rockford Fields LNR, a side street near The Range: our engineers drain the vehicle where it sits.

Tricky to explain, like the back of Hull Vineyard? By a border? Asking is better than guessing, and so phone.

## In short, for Stoneferry drivers

Before you tip, read the cap.

Petrol in Diesel empties it on the spot, anywhere around East Riding of Yorkshire, if AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank anyway — and so leave the vehicle off then phone 0333 366 0103.
