# Stonehaven: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

Leave your motor and ignition off then phone 0333 366 0103 first — the rest can wait if AdBlue is already in the diesel tank.

Usually, if the engine hasn't run, it is drained and fully flushed where your vehicle is around Stonehaven.

Reading in advance? Then the rest covers why it comes about and how to stop it happening at all.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel car

Many modern diesels on the roads around Stonehaven and Glithno carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the motor.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into the exhaust stream and cleans it.

Each tank has its own filler.

Under one flap, next to each other: that is the layout on many cars. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler sits beneath the bonnet or in your boot instead.

At the petrol pump, the diesel side gets filled all the time.

A driver who has to stop and think where it goes usually fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less often.

Mistakes happen in that gap between them.

## Stonehaven: how AdBlue in the diesel tank happens

Carelessness rarely explains it. What does is three things lining up together.

Hurry follows from the warning. The car tells you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank sends it into limp mode — so the top-up happens in a rush, before work on a drive off Market Square, or on the way home in the car park at Queen's Hotel.

New-to-you motors are second, too. Hire cars, new cars and company motors place their fillers in new places, and the hand reaches for the cap used on the old one.

Lastly, the spout goes in: diesel filler or AdBlue one, it slides in just as readily, and once the tip begins, nothing stops it.

Cowie or the heart of Stonehaven: it takes the same few seconds in both.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Look at these before pouring, on a forecourt in Stonehaven or a drive out in Bridge of Muchalls. Seconds, that's all.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap normally is not. Read it instead of going by position.

- On many motors, size gives it away: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- A label inside your fuel flap frequently shows which fuel goes where, on plenty of motors. Look for it.

- The handbook. If the filler isn't by the diesel cap, it's in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at the nearest station.

## How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

Wherever around Aberdeenshire the light comes on, this is a routine for that day.

- Pull in on level, motor off, with time in hand — never hurried on the side of Salmon Lane.

- Find the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and say the name "AdBlue" out loud as unscrewing it. It seems daft. It does the trick.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Slowly does it, through the bottle's own spout, until it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Shut the cap, and check once more — confirm your diesel filler stayed closed the whole time. Only then, start the car.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Never carry on to stage five.

## Stonehaven: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

What follows is a short order of things, beginning with not starting your motor.

The fuel pump runs on plenty of diesels the moment the ignition goes on — so leave it off.

Thinning it with more diesel won't work, since AdBlue sinks to the base instead of blending — and that's where your fuel is drawn from.

If you are at a forecourt, whether it's the BP or the Esso, ask the staff to help push the vehicle away from the petrol pump.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own drive around Stonehaven.

When your motor has been run by now, pull over safely then switch the vehicle off.

Stonehaven sits over 50 miles from the M90; there, use the first exit.

Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Aberdeen, under 15 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Stonehaven.

## When our engineers arrive in Stonehaven, what occurs?

Our van reaches the vehicle anywhere it has come to rest — your own drive, near Stonehaven Town Hall, or outside the local primary school.

Both the work and our quote depend on three replies — which liquid, what quantity, and whether it has run — so we ask.

On the call itself, you are told our price — ahead of anything else.

Then that tank is cleared and your system rinsed thoroughly.

With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own.

After the filter is cleaned — or renewed, where required — clean diesel is added, and finally the vehicle is tested.

After that our technicians fire it up and confirm it runs smoothly before we go.

With pumps fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs where your engine hasn't run need about half an hour once our technicians are there.

Nothing in advance; you settle up on the day. Afterwards, a VAT invoice and the report from the engineer are handed to you for your insurer.

Before we get there, have a look at your policy; plenty include cover for misfuelling.

## Stonehaven and Aberdeenshire: AdBlue drains across the area

Being a coastal town, Stonehaven has the same vans as surrounding places — Kirktown of Fetteresso, Redcloak — right across AB postcodes and the surrounding area beyond.

Quickest of all: quote a AB39 2 postcode for the van.

The car stays where it is.

Anywhere it stands — near St James The Great Episcopal Church, on a lay-by heading to Mineralwell Park, on a drive — that's where it gets cleared.

If you are close to a border, or somewhere hard to explain like the back of William Rickart Hepburn Memorial, ring and ask instead of guessing.

## Stonehaven people: the short version

Always, the cap; after that, the pour.

AdBlue in your diesel tank regardless? Leave the car off and phone 0333 366 0103; Petrol in Diesel drains it where it stands, across Aberdeenshire.
