# Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Stony Lane: Why It Happens

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the engine and your ignition off then phone 0333 366 0103.

A drain and a thorough flush, done just where the car sits around Stony Lane, is usually all it needs if caught before the engine runs.

If you are reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it happens and how to make sure it doesn't.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor: two tanks, two fillers

Diesel feeds the motor — but plenty of modern diesels seen around Stony Lane and Allerton carry a second liquid too.

AdBlue's own tank keeps it, and from there it is sent to your exhaust, and there a spray treats the gas.

There is a filler on each tank.

On a lot of cars the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

At the pump, your diesel side is topped up constantly.

The AdBlue side is fuelled far less commonly, normally from a bottle, and usually by a person who has to stop and think where it goes.

The mistake grows in that gap between the two.

## How does AdBlue in the diesel tank take place around Stony Lane?

Rarely is it carelessness: normally three things coincide.

On a drive off Prune Park Lane before work, or in the car park at Prune Park Inn heading home: that's where the hurried top-up happens. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue gets low the car warns you, and once it's gone, limp mode follows.

The old car's cap is where the hand reaches — but a rental car, a new car or a company car keeps the fillers somewhere else. That's the second thing: a new motor.

Third, the spout fits: diesel filler or AdBlue one, it slides in just as readily, and once the pour starts, no part halts it.

Whether it happens in Hill Top or the middle of Stony Lane, it's the same few seconds.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

A couple of seconds is all the checks take — so check them before you tip anything, on a driveway in Dean Lane Head or a forecourt around Stony Lane.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap usually is not. Read it instead of going by where it sits.

- Plenty of cars give AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.

- Lift the filler flap and look for a label — plenty of cars mark what goes in which filler right there.

- The handbook says which it lives if the filler is not next to the diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- The person who drove the vehicle last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park outside Bingley, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

The day the light goes on, wherever in West Yorkshire, follow this routine.

- Switch off after you park — flat ground, engine stopped, and not in a rush beside Stony Lane at the roadside.

- Silly as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" aloud while you unscrew the cap works — after you have located the filler and read the cap.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave the car on.

- Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Shut the cap, and check again — making sure the diesel filler stayed shut the whole time. Only then, start your car.

Spot at stage two or three that it's already gone into your diesel side? Then stop just there.

Never carry on to step five.

## Stony Lane: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Brief list, then. Top of that: the motor remains off.

Keep your ignition off too, since on plenty of diesels switching it on by itself starts the fuel pump.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where your fuel is sucked from — so do not top up with diesel to thin it.

The attendants at Shell, Esso or any forecourt will usually lend a hand to push the car clear if asked.

If you are on your own drive in Stony Lane, leave it where it sits.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if your motor has already run.

The next junction means where to leave when you're on the M606, under 5 miles from Stony Lane.

Mileage counts — a short hop across Stony Lane is a smaller job than driving under 5 miles to Bradford — so say about how far it went.

## Stony Lane: what happens when our engineers turn up

Our van reaches the vehicle wherever it stopped — your own driveway, beside Pyche Nook, or by Sandy Lane Primary School.

Our technicians ask what got in, roughly how much, and if it has run, because those replies settle this work and our quote.

No one heads out until you have had our quote over the phone.

Then the tank is emptied and the fuel system flushed thoroughly.

With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own.

The filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the car is tested.

Before leaving, our engineers start the car and confirm that it's running properly.

If the motor hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

It is worth checking your insurance as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover comes with many policies.

Tip nothing until you have read the cap.
