# Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Stoop

Motor off, ignition off: that is where you begin if AdBlue has gone into the diesel tank.

Urea dissolved in water is all AdBlue is.

Unlike fuel, it neither ignites nor mixes, and nothing starts till your motor pulls it through.

Caught before your engine has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Stoop.

Call 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

## Your next steps straight away, Stoop: AdBlue in your diesel tank

To do:

- So no one can turn the ignition on, take the keys out.

- Near moving traffic? So put the hazards on.

- The empty bottle or your receipt shows us the product and the amount, so do not bin it out.

- Call right where you are. Say a DG1 3 postcode or the nearest street sign, and nobody has to hunt for you.

Not to do:

- Not even briefly, and not to shift your vehicle: your motor stays off.

- Turning the key to ignition by itself starts your pump going on plenty of diesels. Avoid it.

- AdBlue doesn't dilute in diesel — it separates out — so adding more diesel will not thin it.

- Even a short stretch along Parkhead Drive is too far to drive the car.

- No draining it yourself, either, at the roadside.

At a forecourt around Stoop, whether it is the the nearest petrol station or another one, ask the staff to help you push the car clear of the pump.

On your own drive, do not move it at all.

## What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

The engine is not what AdBlue is made for; the exhaust is.

It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into the exhaust gas to fresh it.

A fuel pump isn't made to take it, and AdBlue was never intended to go through one.

Fuel mixes; AdBlue, after poured in, will not. Its behaviour is not at all like diesel's.

It's heavier than diesel, so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of the tank, which is where the pickup pulls fuel from.

A car topped up on a drive in Greystone overnight and left unstarted counts as the straightforward case. No pump has pulled the AdBlue up so far — but once your motor runs, that is what is pulled first, directly from the bottom of your tank.

It does two kinds of damage from there.

Crystals and corrosion. As the water dries, it strands urea that crystallises in filter elements and tiny channels; meanwhile, since it eats at some metals, each part it reaches suffers for as long as it remains in there.

Lines carrying AdBlue spell harm overnight for a car sitting in Stoop. Just inside the tank, it stays stable.

Diesel protects the injection pump and every injector as it passes; water offers none of that, and that is a second form of harm.

## Why AdBlue in a diesel is frequently more major than petrol

Petrol put into a diesel on Morrisons's forecourt leaves the fuel watery — that is the whole fault.

Harm just comes from driving on it. Blended into the diesel and left inside that tank, it causes none.

AdBlue in a diesel is a problem of the wrong substance altogether.

It doesn't burn, and so it cannot simply be run through.

It does not stay mixed, and so it cannot be weakened. And crystals and corrosion don't wash out with the next tank of fuel. That's why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting your engine "to see" costs more here than nearly anywhere else, whether your car is in Marchmount or the middle of Stoop.

The same good news holds as with petrol.

Emptying a tank is the simplest part on any fuel system, and with no running, the AdBlue stays in there — wherever around Dumfries and Galloway the car has stopped.

## Stoop: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

Plenty of motors put the AdBlue filler alongside the diesel one, occasionally behind one flap, and after dark the two may look the same. No one means it.

Usually it's never the forecourt: a driver buys a bottle heading home and pours it in outside the house.

Mostly, it happens in one of a couple of familiar ways.

Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard flags it up, and outside the local primary school the refill is rushed.

After work, a bottle is tipped in on a drive near Stoop Loaning.

Else, in dim light by Hazeldean House, your vehicle gets topped up by a driver opening that flap the first time.

Rented vehicles, new vehicles, company vehicles, or the spare car in a home with one of each: the least familiar vehicles get it most.

Keep it switched off: that is the first step to the same slip, anywhere in Stoop or the rest of Dumfries and Galloway you happen to be.

## Started the engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank around Stoop?

Then your tank is no longer where the AdBlue is.

Through the filter, along the lines, and — with any running time — on to the injection pump and each injector: that's where it has gone.

Maybe coming back from Fontainbleau Ladypark Nature Reserve, or midway across Stoop, the engine may run lumpy, smoke, lose pace, flash the dash or stall.

Stop when it is safe. Turn off. Keep the vehicle off instead of restarting it to check.

With each start, more of it is pulled through.

Stoop sits under 10 miles from the A74(M); if you were on it, exit at the next junction and pull up safely instead of driving on.

How far it went matters. A couple of hundred yards across Stoop to the car park by David Keswick Athletic Centre is a very different job from a run towards Carlisle, under 50 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the fuel system with every mile.

About how far it had come is worth telling us.

Once the engine has been run, the flush includes more, and all of it is done where the car has ended up.

If it is noticed early, lasting damage is very unusual.

## Stoop: how AdBlue is drained from a diesel

A street by Dumfries Baptist Church, a driveway, a lay-by or a filling station: anywhere the car has come to rest in Stoop, our technicians come to it.

The work depends on three answers, which our engineers ask for before all else — which fluid got in, the quantity, and if the engine has run.

Then that tank is cleared where your car waits, and so the polluted fuel and the AdBlue come out together.

Residue from AdBlue will not wash away unaided, and so the fuel system gets a full flush, which counts far more with urea than with petrol.

Fresh diesel goes in after your filter is cleaned — or swapped, if it needs to be — and then your vehicle is tested.

Not run? Then expect roughly half an hour on site for most jobs.

Explosion-proof pumps mean a live forecourt sensible to work on, and they run quiet enough to spare the neighbours at night.

Bleeding the system with fresh diesel comes at the end.

You set off as soon as our technicians have fired it up, and it makes no difference whether your car is on a drive in Stoop or in a space at Dumfries.

Our technicians confirm it runs smoothly on clean diesel before we go.

As the job is done in its entirety where the car is, a workshop never comes into it.

You receive a VAT invoice and an engineer report after that, which is what insurers want.

## AdBlue drains across Stoop and Dumfries and Galloway

Over the DG postcode area, the teams answering AdBlue jobs around Stoop reach most of Dumfries and Galloway too, Greenbrae, Milldamhead and Noblehill among them.

Phone and check instead of guessing when you are close to a county line, or anywhere tricky to explain.

Anywhere your car stands — your driveway at home, a side street, a parking area, a filling station — our technicians drain it there, with no need to bring it to us; that suits Stoop, a residential suburb, well.

## What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out in Stoop?

There's no honest single quote, since the jobs aren't the same.

Whether your engine has run, and for how long, comes first in what shifts the cost. How much AdBlue was put in comes next, and then the location of the vehicle, since an open driveway is easier for our van to reach safely than a tight gap behind Georgetown Library.

What went in, how much, plus if the engine ran: every Stoop call opens with exactly those, before a quote, not afterwards.

When those are known, a range turns into one fixed number.

The price is quoted during the call, before a van leaves; settling up comes on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront.

While the van is travelling, check your policy: plenty include misfuelling.

## Stoop: still beside the car?

Then, the best thing to do with your vehicle is to leave it.

Keys out; motor and ignition off.

Petrol in Diesel handles the rest, in Stoop or wherever in Dumfries and Galloway, once you ring 0333 366 0103 saying it was AdBlue, roughly what quantity, and whether it ran.
