# Why It Occurs and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Strabane

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the engine and the ignition off then call 0333 366 0103.

Around Strabane, catching it before the engine turns normally means draining and a thorough flush where it stands.

Not happened yet? Further down, the page explains the why it happens and the how to avoid it altogether.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle, and its separate tank

Many modern diesels in Artigarvan, like those in Strabane, carry on two fluids; the engine gets just the diesel.

The exhaust, not your motor, is where AdBlue ends up: dosed into the gas to clean it, from a separate tank.

Different tanks, different fillers.

Under one flap, next to each other: that's the layout on a lot of motors. On others, AdBlue's filler is under the bonnet or in your boot instead.

The diesel side is filled at the petrol pump all the time.

Seldom filled, AdBlue usually comes out of a bottle, tipped by someone who must stop and think what filler it needs.

The mistake grows in the gap between them.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank around Strabane: how it occurs

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

On a drive off Crown Street before work, or in the car park outside the pub in the village on the way home: that's where the hurried top-up takes place. Why the rush? As AdBlue runs low the car warns you, and if it is empty, limp mode follows.

Next, the hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old car — because a rental car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't.

Nothing halts the tip after it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

Whether it happens in Ballymagorry or the middle of Strabane, it is the same few seconds.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

Before you pour anything, whether on a driveway in Clady or a forecourt in Strabane, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- Colour and lettering: an AdBlue cap is often blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally doesn't. Trust the cap, not where it sits.

- On plenty of motors, size gives it away: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- Look inside your fuel flap: many motors carry a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If the filler isn't by the diesel cap, it's in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Collecting a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park at the nearest station? Ask the person who drove the vehicle last before leaving, rather than once the light goes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

The day the light goes on, wherever around County Tyrone, use this routine.

- Switch off after you park — level ground, motor stopped, and never in a rush beside Crom Street on the verge.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it works.

- The diesel cap stays on. When the two share a flap, confirm it's closed before lifting the bottle.

- Gently does it, through the bottle's own spout, till it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Only after that, start the vehicle: close the cap, check a second time, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

Find at the second or third stage that AdBlue went into the diesel tank? That is where you stop.

Skip step five entirely.

## Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Strabane?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start your engine.

Do not switch the ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where the fuel is pulled from — so do not top up with diesel to dilute it.

The staff at the nearest petrol station, another forecourt nearby or any forecourt will usually help pushing the vehicle away if asked.

If you're on your own drive in Strabane, leave the car where it sits.

When the engine has run already, stop safely then switch it off.

On the M77, over 50 miles from Strabane, that means the next exit.

A short hop across Strabane is a smaller job than a run towards Derry, under 15 miles away, and so tell us roughly how far it went.

## Strabane: what happens when our technicians turn up

Our engineers come to your car wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside the local primary school, close to the centre or on your own driveway.

The replies settle the work and the price, so our engineers ask what was put in, roughly how much, and if it has run.

On the phone call itself, you hear the quote — ahead of anything else.

The system is then rinsed thoroughly, after that tank is cleared.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol.

The filter cleaned or, where it must be, swapped; clean diesel in; then a check of the car.

Before we go, our technicians start the car and confirm that it's running correctly.

With pumps safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs in which the motor hasn't run take roughly half an hour once our technicians arrive.

No money upfront; you settle up on the day. At the end, a VAT invoice and the report from the engineer go to you for the insurer.

It's worth checking your insurance as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover comes with plenty of policies.

Wherever it sits — beside a street just off the centre, in a layby heading to the green space at the edge of the village, at home — that's where it gets emptied.

Tricky to explain, like the back of the far end of the built-up part? By a border? Asking is better than assuming, and so phone.
