# AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Strand? Keep It Switched Off

If AdBlue has got into the diesel tank, leave the engine off then leave your ignition off.

Water with urea dissolved in it: that is AdBlue.

The harm begins once it's sucked through the lines — it won't burn, and it will not combine with diesel.

In Strand, AdBlue in a diesel tank found before your engine runs usually comes down to a drain and a thorough flush, right where your car is.

Before anything, ring us on 0333 366 0103.

## Those opening minutes: AdBlue in the diesel tank in Strand

Do these:

- Take the keys out, so no one switches the ignition on.

- Near moving traffic? Then put the hazards on.

- So you can give us which liquid it was and roughly what quantity, keep the receipt or the empty bottle.

- Our van finds you fastest with a postcode starting WC2E 9, or just the name of a street nearby, so call from the car.

Not to do:

- No starting the motor — not briefly, not to shift the car.

- Do not switch your ignition on. On many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

- AdBlue does not dilute in diesel — it separates out — so adding extra fuel will not thin it.

- Any driving at all is to be avoided, including a short stretch up Langley Street.

- Beside the road, don't attempt draining it yourself.

Moving the car off the island is a job for attendants to help with, whichever Strand forecourt you are on, the Texaco or any other.

Stopped on your own drive? Then it remains exactly as it is.

## What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

AdBlue is made for the exhaust, not your engine.

It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into the exhaust gas to fresh it.

Neither side suits the other: urea doesn't belong in an injection pump, and an injection pump cannot deal with urea.

Tipped in with the diesel, it stays separate instead of blending — entirely unlike fuel.

It drops, because it is denser than diesel, and pools down where the pickup draws its fuel from.

Simplest of all: one that had AdBlue in Aldwych overnight and has not been started since. The AdBlue waits at the base of your tank, undrawn — though it would be first through once the motor runs, ahead of any diesel at all.

After it is sucked in, the damage takes two forms.

What remains once the water goes is urea, which turns into crystals: they settle in tiny passages and block filters. Worse, it eats at some metals in the fuel system, and keeps going until it's flushed out.

Lines holding AdBlue spell harm by morning for a car sitting around Strand. Only inside the tank, it stays the same.

The water in it does harm of its own: the high-pressure fuel pump and your injectors rely on diesel to lubricate them, and water offers them nothing.

## Why is AdBlue in a diesel often the bigger issue?

Put petrol in a diesel at the Esso and you have a problem of thin fuel.

It mixes with your diesel, and whilst it's in your tank it causes no damage; the damage comes from running the engine on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a fault of the wrong substance altogether.

It can't simply be run through, since it does not burn.

It does not stay mixed, and so it can't be weakened. And crystals and corrosion don't wash out with the next tank of fuel. That's why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting the motor "to see" costs more here than nearly anywhere else, whether the car is in Soho or the middle of Strand.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

Wherever in Greater London the vehicle has stopped, an unrun motor leaves the AdBlue yet inside the tank: the simplest bit of any fuel system to empty.

## How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank around Strand?

Nobody means to do it. The AdBlue filler on many vehicles sits right next to your diesel filler, occasionally under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light.

Most of the time it happens with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the drive, not at the forecourt.

Mostly, it takes place in one of a couple of familiar ways.

The top-up is rushed outside St Clement Danes CofE Primary School, because your dash flashed with a warning as the kids were taken in.

A driver tips the container in outside their house, just off Mercer Walk, as the day ends.

Another pattern: darkness, the car park by The White Lion, and someone opening that flap the first time.

Rented cars, new vehicles, fleet motors, or the second vehicle in a home with both fuels: the least known cars see it most.

Wherever you are around Strand or the remainder of Greater London, it is the same mistake and the same first answer: leave the car off.

## Strand: started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Then that tank is no longer where the AdBlue is.

It's been drawn through the fuel filter and the lines, and if your motor ran for any time, it has got to your high-pressure pump and your injectors.

Rough running, smoke from the exhaust, lost power, dashboard lights or stalling: any might appear, maybe part way across Strand or returning from Inigo Jones Garden.

Once safe, stop and switch it off — with no restarting to test.

Every start pulls more of it through.

If you were on the M1, under 10 miles from Strand, come off at the next exit and stop somewhere sensible rather than pressing on.

Mileage counts: every mile pushes the AdBlue deeper into the system, and so heading towards Westminster, under a mile away, gives a much bigger job than hopping across Strand to the car park by Margot Fonteyn.

Let us know roughly how far it had come.

There's more to clean out once the engine has run, and our engineers do all of it where the vehicle has ended up.

If it is caught early, long-term damage is very uncommon.

## What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in Strand?

The car remains where it is, whether that is a road near Guinness Open Gate Brewery London, a drive, a lay-by or a filling station in Strand, and our van comes to it.

What was put in, roughly the quantity, plus whether the motor has been run: our engineers check first, because those shape the job.

On the spot, the tank is then emptied, and all of the polluted diesel and the urea come out as one.

Your system is purged thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what it leaves behind does not rinse out on its own.

After that, the filter: flushed, or changed when it has to be. Then clean diesel, then a check of your car.

Roughly half an hour once we arrive is typical for most jobs where your motor has not run.

Low-noise enough to use outside a house at night, and fine on a working forecourt, the pumps are explosion-proof.

Clean diesel goes in to prime your system, and that's the final step.

Starting the car comes next, and then you set off from where your car is parked, by London Charing Cross or on a driveway around Strand.

Before we leave, we check it is running properly with clean diesel in.

As the job is done in its entirety where the car is, a garage never comes into it.

Afterwards, there is paperwork for the insurer: a VAT invoice plus a report from the engineer.

## About Strand, for a moment

Strand is a suburban area in the heart of London, situated on the north bank of the River Thames at an elevation of 34 metres. Strand sits adjacent to notable areas such as Covent Garden, St Giles, and Chinatown, and is within walking distance of Westminster. Strand is predominantly composed of flat dwellings, accommodating a population of approximately 8770 residents. Strand is characterised by its riverside location and proximity to central London, being just 0.4 miles from the city centre.

## Strand and Greater London: AdBlue drains across the area

The teams that answer AdBlue jobs around Strand also cover the spots around it, Covent Garden, St Giles and Chinatown among them, and most of Greater London beyond, across the WC2E postcode area.

Ring and ask rather than guess when you are by a border, or anywhere tricky to pin down.

Strand is a residential suburb, and a call-out drain suits it: whether the car is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, our technicians drain it where it sits, so it never needs to be moved to us.

## Strand: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

No single figure could be honest, since each job is different.

Three things change the price: whether the engine has run and for how long, how much AdBlue went in, and where the car is. That last one comes down to whether our van can reach it safely, and an open drive is simpler than a tight space behind TK Maxx.

That is why every call from Strand starts with the same three questions, asked before giving a figure, not after: what went in, how much, and whether it has run.

Given those replies, the range narrows to one firm number.

You get that price on the phone, before anybody sets off, and you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront.

As the van is travelling, dig out your policy: plenty include misfuelling.

## Alongside the vehicle in Strand, still?

In that case, touch nothing — that's the best move available.

Keys out; motor and ignition off.

Call 0333 366 0103: AdBlue, roughly how much, plus whether it ran are all we ask. Petrol in Diesel handles the rest throughout Greater London, Strand too.
