# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Straw? Don't Start It

AdBlue in your diesel tank? Then leave the motor off — and the ignition as well.

AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Being water-based, it will not ignite and won't blend with diesel; trouble just comes once your pump starts drawing it.

If the engine has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally drained and carefully flushed where your car stands around Straw.

First, call us on 0333 366 0103.

## Straw, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do right away

To do:

- Keys out — that way nobody can power anything on.

- Put your hazards on if you are anywhere close to moving traffic.

- Which product, and about how much quantity? Hang on to the bottle or the receipt, and we will know.

- Call us from where you are. A postcode starting BT45 7, or the name of the nearest street, brings our van to you without a search.

Don't do these:

- No starting your engine — not briefly, not to reposition the car.

- Don't switch your ignition on. On plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

- AdBlue does not dilute in diesel — it separates out — so adding more diesel will not thin it.

- Any driving at all is best avoided, including a short stretch along Wallace Cottages.

- No draining it yourself, either, on the verge.

Get the attendants to help you move the car off the island if you're at a forecourt around Straw, whether it is the the nearest petrol station or somewhere else.

At your own drive, don't touch it at all.

## What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

AdBlue is made for your exhaust, not the motor.

Its own tank keeps it, and from there it's sprayed into your exhaust, and there it treats the fumes.

Neither side suits the other: urea does not belong in a pump, and a pump can't deal with urea.

It does not combine. Once it is tipped into a tank of diesel, AdBlue behaves nothing like fuel.

The intake sucks fuel from the deepest part of your tank, and that's precisely where AdBlue settles: as it is denser than diesel, it sinks.

Easiest of all: one that got AdBlue in Desertmartin overnight and hasn't been started since. The AdBlue waits at the foot of that tank, untouched — but it will be the first thing through if your motor runs, before any diesel at all.

From there it does two kinds of damage.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it is corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, so it keeps working on the parts it hits for as long as it stays there.

A motor left standing in Straw with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank is not.

Then there is the water: it offers no protection to the components that rely on it the most — the injection pump and every injector.

## Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is commonly worse

Petrol pumped into a diesel on another forecourt nearby's forecourt leaves the fuel watery — that is the main fault.

No damage is done while it sits unused, blended into your diesel — only when the motor runs on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is an issue of the wrong substance altogether.

It does not burn, so it cannot simply be run through.

Whether your vehicle is in Maghera or the centre of Straw, turning it over "to see" does more harm in this case than nearly any other mistake, and the flush counts for more. The reasons: it won't remain mixed, and so watering it down is impossible; and crystals and corrosion outlast the next tankful.

The same good news applies as with petrol.

Emptying a tank is the easiest job on any fuel system, and with no running, the AdBlue remains in it — anywhere in County Londonderry your vehicle has stopped.

## How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank in Straw

After dark, two caps side by side — the AdBlue one and the diesel one, occasionally under a single flap — may look the same. No one intends it; many layouts invite it.

Mostly it happens with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the drive, not at the pump.

A few familiar ways account for most cases.

Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard flags it up, and outside the local primary school the top-up is rushed.

A driver tips the bottle in outside their house, right off Dunaverty Court, as the day ends.

Or someone new to that flap refills the vehicle after dark, stopped in the car park by the pub in the village.

The least familiar cars get it the most — rentals, new cars, company cars, and the other car of a home with one of each fuels.

Wherever you are in Straw or the remainder of County Londonderry, it is the same mistake and the same first answer: leave the car off.

## Straw: started the engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank?

The AdBlue has left the tank, then.

It has been sucked through the filter and the lines, and if your engine ran for any time, it has got to the high-pressure pump and the injectors.

Expect rough running, exhaust smoke, falling power, lights on your dash, or a stall — coming back from the green space at the edge of the village, perhaps, or part way across Straw.

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and don't restart it to check.

More of it is pulled through with each start.

Straw lies over 50 miles from the M77; if you were on it, leave at the first junction and stop safely instead of driving on.

Every mile pushes the AdBlue further in. That is why crossing Straw to park near the centre and a drive of under 25 miles towards Derry are such different jobs.

Let us know roughly how far it had come.

Once the motor has run, the flush includes more, and all of it is done where your car has ended up.

Noticed early, it very seldom leaves permanent damage.

## What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in Straw?

Wherever it has stopped in Straw — a filling station, a lay-by, a drive, a street by a street just off the centre — our van comes to the car.

Three replies shape the job, and so before anything else we ask which fluid got in, about the amount, plus whether your engine has turned over.

The contaminated diesel and the urea leave together when your tank is drained, right there.

What remains from AdBlue won't flush out unaided, so the whole system gets a careful flush, which counts much more here than for petrol.

Testing the vehicle follows last, once fresh diesel goes in and your filter is flushed or, if necessary, replaced.

Engine not run? In that case count on roughly half an hour on site for most jobs.

Low-noise enough to use outside a house at night, and safe on a busy forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.

Clean diesel goes in to bleed the fuel system, and that is the last step.

You drive off as soon as our engineers have fired it up, and it makes no difference whether the car is on a drive around Straw or in a bay at the nearest station.

Our engineers check it runs properly on fresh diesel before leaving.

Our technicians do it all wherever the car has ended up, and it never needs to go to a garage.

Insurers ask for a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and both come at the end.

## About Straw and where it is

Straw is a small locality in County Londonderry, situated inland at an elevation of 89 metres. Straw lies near the villages of Draperstown and Moneyneany, and is approximately 24.7 miles from Derry. Straw is characterised by its predominantly detached housing stock, reflecting its rural setting. Straw is a relatively small community, with a population of around 795 people.

## Straw and County Londonderry: AdBlue drains across the area

AdBlue jobs around Straw are passed to teams that cover the towns near it — Draperstown, Moneyneany plus Tobermore — and most of County Londonderry beyond, throughout BT postcodes.

Guessing doesn't help by a county line or anywhere tricky to pin down; phone and check.

A van that comes to you fits Straw, a small village: there's no need to take the vehicle to us, because our engineers empty it there, on a driveway, a side street, a car park or a filling station.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Straw: the cost of fixing it

Since the jobs differ, a single figure wouldn't be honest.

Whether your engine has run, and for how long, comes first in what changes the cost. How much AdBlue got in comes next, and then the location of the vehicle, since an open driveway is easier for a van to reach safely than a tight space behind the far end of the built-up part.

That is why each call from Straw starts with the same three queries, asked before giving a figure, not after: what got in, how much, and whether it's run.

Those answers turn a range into a straight quote.

Priced by phone before the engineer heads out, it is settled on the day — card or phone, no deposit.

Check your policy whilst we're on the way: plenty include misfuelling cover.

## Straw: still next to the car?

Then the most helpful thing you can do is nothing to the car.

Ignition off, engine off, keys out.

Ring 0333 366 0103: AdBlue, roughly how much, plus whether it ran is everything we ask. Petrol in Diesel takes over the remainder across County Londonderry, Straw too.
