# Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Sturton by Stow: Why It Happens

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your engine and your ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103.

Caught before the engine runs, it is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Sturton by Stow.

Nothing happened yet? Below, the page explains the reasons it takes place and the how to avoid it altogether.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel car

Plenty of newer diesels on the roads about Sturton by Stow and Normanby by Stow carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the motor.

AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Separate tanks, different fillers.

Some cars put the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; plenty of others place both side by side under one flap.

The diesel side is filled at the petrol pump all the time.

The AdBlue side is filled far less often, normally from a bottle, and usually by a person who has to stop and think where it goes.

That gap is where the slip lives.

## How does AdBlue in the diesel tank take place around Sturton by Stow?

Seldom is it carelessness: usually three things line up.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a warning from the vehicle, and letting it run dry means limp mode — hence a rushed top-up, maybe before work off Fleets Road, or outside The Cross Keys on the way home that evening.

Then the car is strange. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and the hand hits for the cap it would have used on the old one.

Third, the bottle fits: a diesel filler or AdBlue one, it slides in as easily, and once the pour begins, no part halts it.

Stow or the middle of Sturton by Stow: it takes the same few seconds in both.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Check these first, on a forecourt in Sturton by Stow or a drive out in Thorpe le Fallows. A few seconds, no more.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap usually isn't. Read it instead of going by where it sits.

- On plenty of vehicles, the size tells: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- Lift the flap and look for a label — many vehicles show what belongs in which filler just there.

- The handbook. If the filler isn't by the diesel cap, it's in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Saxilby.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

The day the light comes on, wherever in Lincolnshire, use this routine.

- Switch off once parked — level ground, engine off, and not in a rush by High Street on the verge.

- Daft as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" aloud as you unscrew the cap works — once you have located the filler and read the cap.

- The two behind one flap? So confirm the cap on the diesel filler stays closed before lifting the bottle.

- Gently is best, through the bottle's own spout, till it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check once more. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the car.

Spot at stage two or three that it has already gone into your diesel side? So stop right there.

Do not go on to stage five.

## Sturton by Stow: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start the motor.

Keep your ignition off as well, because on many diesels it alone starts the fuel pump.

Don't top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where the fuel is drawn from.

If you are at a forecourt, whether it is the the nearest petrol station or the another forecourt nearby, ask the staff to help roll the car away from the pump.

On your own drive around Sturton by Stow? Then the car remains put.

Already started? Pull over once it is safe, then turn off.

Sturton by Stow sits under 25 miles from the M180; on it, use the next junction.

A short hop across Sturton by Stow is a smaller job than a run towards Lincoln, under 10 miles away, and so tell us roughly how far it went.

## Our arrival in Sturton by Stow, and what happens next

The van reaches your car anywhere it stopped — your own drive, beside Sturton-by-Stow Village Hall, or outside Sturton by Stow Primary School.

Both the work and the price rest on three answers — which fluid, what quantity, and whether it's run — so our technicians ask.

During the call itself, you are told the quote — ahead of anything else.

Emptying that tank comes next, followed by a thorough flush of the system.

More than with petrol, it counts with AdBlue: the crystals form, some metals are attacked, and nothing clears away unaided, no matter how long it is left.

The fuel filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the car is tested.

The engine is started next and checked to be sure it runs correctly, all before our engineers head off.

Most jobs are finished in about half an hour after our engineers get there, as long as your engine has not run — and the pumps we use are safe on a live forecourt and quiet at night outside a house.

Paying is on the day, not upfront, and you receive the paperwork your insurer wants: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

Wrong-fuel cover is included in plenty of insurance policies — so use the wait to check yours.
