# AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Sudbury? Keep It Switched Off

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, the ignition stays off and so does your engine.

Chemically, AdBlue is just urea in water.

As it is water-based, it won't burn and won't blend with diesel; trouble only comes once the pump starts drawing it.

If the motor hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally drained and thoroughly rinsed where the vehicle sits in Sudbury.

Nothing comes before calling 0333 366 0103.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank around Sudbury: the first few minutes

To do:

- So no one can switch the ignition on, take your keys out.

- Close to moving traffic? So put the hazards on.

- Keep your receipt or the empty bottle, and so you can tell us what was put in and about how much.

- Give us a postcode starting CO10 1, or whichever street is closest, and our van finds you straight — so ring from wherever you are.

Don't do these:

- Not even for a second, and not to shift the car: your engine stays off.

- Plenty of diesels run their pump the instant the ignition goes on, and so keep the vehicle off.

- Adding extra diesel does not work: AdBlue settles out instead of blending.

- Any driving at all is to be avoided, even a short stretch down East Street.

- No draining it yourself, at all, at the verge.

At a forecourt around Sudbury, whether it's the BP or another one, ask the attendants to help you roll the vehicle away from the petrol pump.

Stopped on your own drive? Then it stays exactly where it is.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

Made for your exhaust, AdBlue has no business in the motor.

From a separate reservoir it goes directly to your exhaust, cleaning what your engine lets out.

No part in an injection pump is made for this fluid — and no part of it was meant to travel through one.

Inside a diesel tank it behaves very differently from fuel. It does not mix in.

It's heavier than diesel, so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of the tank, which is where the pickup pulls fuel from.

The first thing the fuel system pulls through, after it runs, is the AdBlue. So a motor that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Middleton last night, and hasn't been started since, is still the straightforward case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of your tank, and nothing has sucked it in.

From there it causes two kinds of damage.

What remains once the water goes is urea, which turns into crystals: they lodge in narrow channels and block filters. Worse, it attacks some metals in a fuel system, and keeps going until it's flushed out.

A car left sitting around Sudbury with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank is not.

Diesel lubricates the injection pump and each injector as it passes; water offers none of that, and that is a second form of damage.

## Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is regularly worse

Fill a diesel with petrol by mistake at the Sainsbury's, and the issue is thinned fuel.

Blended into your diesel and left still, it's harmless for now; using the engine is the harm.

AdBlue in a diesel is another matter: not thin fuel, yet no fuel at all.

Since it does not burn, running it through isn't an option.

It does not stay mixed, so it can't be weakened. And crystals and corrosion do not wash out with the next tank of fuel. That is why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting your engine "to see" costs more here than nearly anywhere else, whether your car is in Great Cornard or the middle of Sudbury.

As with petrol, there is good news.

Wherever across Suffolk your car has stopped, an unstarted engine means the AdBlue yet in the reservoir: the simplest bit of a fuel system to empty.

## Sudbury: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

It's not deliberate. Many cars keep the AdBlue cap alongside the diesel one, now and then behind one flap, and mixing them up is easy after dark.

A container picked up when heading home and tipped in at home, rather than at the filling station, is the usual route.

Usually, it happens in one of a couple of familiar ways.

A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up takes place in a hurry outside St Joseph's Roman Catholic Primary School.

Near Old Market Place, a driver tips a container in at home in the evening.

One more pattern: darkness, the car park by White Horse, and a driver opening that flap for the first time.

Rented vehicles, brand-new cars, fleet motors, or the second vehicle in a family with one of each: the least familiar cars get it the most.

Keep it off: that is the first step to an identical slip, anywhere in Sudbury or the remainder of Suffolk you happen to be.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Sudbury, and the engine started?

Then that tank is no longer where the AdBlue is.

It's been pulled through the filter and the lines, and if the engine ran for any time, it has reached your high-pressure pump and the injectors.

You may notice the engine running unevenly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, possibly on the way back from Siam Gardens or halfway across Sudbury.

Once you safely can, stop and switch everything off — without turning it on again to see.

More of it is pulled through with each start.

On the M11, under 25 miles from Sudbury, the first junction is where to exit, and anywhere sensible is where to park — not carrying on.

Distance counts: every mile carries the AdBlue further in, so driving for Colchester, under 15 miles away, gives a much bigger job than hopping across Sudbury to the car park by Sudbury Town Hall.

Tell us about how far it had come.

We do all of the rinsing where the car has ended up, and once your engine has been started there is more of it.

Long-term damage is very rare if it's caught early.

## What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in Sudbury?

Anywhere it has come to rest in Sudbury — a filling station, a lay-by, a driveway, a street by Sudbury Heritage Centre and Museum — the van travels to your vehicle.

The job depends on three answers, and our technicians get first — which fluid got in, the amount, and whether the engine has run.

Then the tank is cleared where the vehicle waits, and so the polluted fuel and the AdBlue come out together.

Residue from AdBlue won't flush away unaided, so the fuel system gets a careful flush, which matters much more here than with petrol.

Your filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

If your engine has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once our engineers are there.

Explosion-proof pumps mean a busy forecourt sensible to work on, and they're quiet enough to spare the street at night.

Bleeding your system with clean diesel comes last.

Firing it up comes next, and then you set off from where your car is parked, by Sudbury Suffolk or on a drive around Sudbury.

The test before we leave is that it runs correctly on fresh diesel.

Since the job is done in its entirety where the vehicle is, a garage never comes into it.

The insurer is likely to want an engineer's report and the VAT invoice — each handed over once the job is done.

## About Sudbury

Sudbury is a town situated on the River Stour in Suffolk, with a mix of terraced housing and other residential properties. Sudbury sits at an elevation of 37 metres, close to the Essex border and near the villages of Brundon, Ballingdon, and Chilton. Sudbury is located 12.6 miles from Colchester and 52 miles from London, making it a commuter town with a population of around 14660 people. Sudbury has a riverside setting that influences its character and layout.

## Sudbury and Suffolk: AdBlue drains across the area

Our vans that answer AdBlue jobs in Sudbury also cover the spots around it, Brundon, Ballingdon and Chilton among them, and most of Suffolk beyond, across the CO postcode area.

Assuming doesn't help by a county line or somewhere hard to describe; ring and ask.

Wherever the vehicle sits — your drive at home, a residential street, a parking area, a filling station — we drain it on the spot, with no need to take it to us; that suits Sudbury, a riverside town, well.

## Sudbury: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

No flat figure would be fair, since every job is different.

The cost changes first with how long, if at all, your engine has been running, and next with the quantity of AdBlue that was put in. After that it rests on where the car is and whether a van can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open drive than in a tight space behind QD Stores.

For that reason, each call from Sudbury begins by asking the identical trio — which fluid went in, what quantity, if it ran — before a quote.

Given those replies, the range shrinks to a single firm number.

Priced by phone before the engineer heads out, it is settled that day — card or phone, no deposit.

Look at your policy whilst we are on the way: plenty include misfuelling cover.

## In Sudbury and still beside the vehicle?

Leaving the vehicle alone is, then, the best thing you can do.

Keys out; motor and ignition off.

Petrol in Diesel takes over the rest, in Sudbury or anywhere in Suffolk, after you call 0333 366 0103 to say it's AdBlue, about how big an amount, and if the engine ran.
