# Sutton: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

Stop reading a minute when your diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, and phone 0333 366 0103.

In Sutton, catching it before the motor turns normally means a drain and a thorough flush where it stands.

If you are reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it occurs and how to make sure it doesn't.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel motor

Plenty of modern diesels on the roads around Sutton and Bishopstone carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your engine.

Your exhaust, not your motor, is where AdBlue goes: sprayed into the fumes to fresh it, from a separate tank.

There's a filler on every tank.

On a lot of motors the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

Filling the diesel side at the pump goes on all the time.

Rarely topped up, AdBlue normally comes from a bottle, tipped by someone who must stop and think what filler to use.

That gap is where the mistake lives.

## Sutton: how AdBlue in the diesel tank takes place

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

Haste follows from the warning. Your car tells you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank puts it into limp mode — so the top-up happens quickly, before work on a driveway off Sutton Drove, or on the way home in the car park at The Cinque Ports.

Then your car is strange. A hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and the hand gets to for the cap it would have used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the tip after it has started.

The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Sutton or out in East Blatchington.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Whether a Sutton forecourt or a driveway over in Westdean, take a few seconds on these before any goes in.

- Read the cap rather than going by where it sits: AdBlue ones are commonly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps normally are not.

- Many vehicles give AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Many vehicles say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook shows where it lives if your filler isn't next to the diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside Seaford.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever around East Sussex that is.

- Not in a rush on the side of Alfriston Road, not on a slope, not with the engine running: park and switch off first.

- Find the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and speak the word "AdBlue" aloud while you unscrew it. It seems silly. It works.

- The diesel cap stays on. When both sit under a flap, make sure it is closed before lifting the bottle.

- Finish once that tank is topped up or the bottle is empty; until then, tip slowly through its own spout.

- Before starting the vehicle, shut the cap and look again that your diesel cap was never came off.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Leave out step five altogether.

## Sutton: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

The short order of things, beginning with not starting the engine.

On many diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so do not switch the car on.

AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where the fuel is drawn from — so do not top up with diesel to thin it.

The attendants at Texaco, Morrisons or another forecourt will normally help to push the vehicle away if asked.

If you are on your own drive in Sutton, leave the car where it is.

Already run? Stop once it's safe, then turn off.

Sutton sits under 50 miles from the M23; there, take the next exit.

A short hop across Sutton is a smaller job than a run towards Brighton and Hove, under 15 miles away, and so tell us roughly how far it went.

## When we turn up around Sutton, what happens?

Outside Chyngton School, close to Downs Leisure Centre or on your own drive: wherever your car has stopped, we come to it.

Both the work and the price rest on three replies — what liquid, what amount, and whether it's run — so our engineers ask.

You hear that price by phone, before anyone heads out.

Next: draining, then a full flush of the whole system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why that matters more here than with petrol.

Testing is at the end: before that, fresh diesel is added, and the fuel filter is flushed or changed as needed.

Before we leave, our technicians start the engine and confirm that it's running smoothly.

If your engine hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.

If you are close to a boundary, or somewhere hard to explain like the back of Catholic Church of St Thomas More, ring and ask rather than assuming.
