# Sutton: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the motor and the ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103.

Around Sutton, catching it before your engine turns normally leaves draining and a thorough flush on the spot.

Reading in advance? Then what follows covers how it comes about and what to prevent it happening at all.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel motor need its own filler?

Not one fluid but two: that's what plenty of newer diesels near Sutton and Brotherton run, with diesel for the motor.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

There's a filler for each tank.

On a lot of vehicles the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

Topping up your diesel side at the petrol pump happens all the time.

Someone who has to stop and think where it goes normally tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less commonly.

That gap is where the mistake lives.

## How does AdBlue in the diesel tank occur around Sutton?

It's seldom carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and if it runs out altogether, the car goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Marlborough Avenue before work, or in the car park outside The Golden Lion on the way home.

Then the vehicle is new. A hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't, and your hand gets to for the cap it would have used on the old one.

No part halts the pour after it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

Byram or the middle of Sutton: it takes the same few seconds either way.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

Be it a Sutton forecourt or a driveway out in Ferrybridge, take a couple of seconds on these before anything goes in.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap normally is not. Read it rather than going by where it sits.

- On plenty of motors, the size tells: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- A label inside your fuel flap frequently shows which fuel goes where, on plenty of vehicles. Look for it.

- In your boot or under the bonnet: that is where your filler is if it is not by the diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- Whoever had it before will know. Ask when you collect a rental or fleet car — from Knottingley's car park, perhaps — rather than once the light comes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever across North Yorkshire that is.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with your engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Buckingham Way.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it works.

- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Gently is best, through the bottle's own spout, until it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Only after that, start the car: close the cap, check once more, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

Spot at step two or three that it's already gone into the diesel side? So stop just there.

Stage five is off limits.

## Put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Sutton already?

Short list, then. Top of it: the engine remains unstarted.

Do not switch your ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Topping up with diesel will not thin it: instead, AdBlue drops to the bottom of the tank, right where the fuel is taken from.

At a forecourt — Morrisons, Esso or any other — the staff will normally help roll your car away, if you ask.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own drive in Sutton.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if the motor has already run.

The next exit is the place to come off when you're on the A1(M), under 3 miles from Sutton.

Roughly how far did it go? Crossing Sutton is less work than a trip of under 15 miles towards Wakefield, and so tell us.

## When our technicians turn up in Sutton, what takes place?

The van comes to your car wherever it stopped — your own drive, beside Byram Parish Hall, or outside Brotherton and Byram Community Primary Academy.

Both the work and the quote depend on three replies — what fluid, what quantity, and whether it has run — so our engineers ask.

No one sets off before you have had the price over the phone.

After that: a drain, then a full flush of the entire system.

Much more than with petrol, it counts with AdBlue: the crystals build up, certain metals are attacked, and nothing washes away on its own, no matter how long it is left.

After the fuel filter is cleaned — or replaced, if required — clean diesel is added, and then the vehicle gets tested.

We don't go until it has been fired up and is running correctly.

Most jobs are finished in about half an hour after we arrive, as long as the engine hasn't run — and the pumps our technicians use are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet at night outside a house.

Payment happens on the day, not upfront, and you receive the documents your insurer asks for: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.

## AdBlue drains across North Yorkshire, Sutton included

Being a rural hamlet, Sutton shares its vans nearby places — Knottingley, Ferrybridge Hill — right across WF postcodes and the surrounding area beyond.

Quote a postcode beginning WF11 9, and the van arrives quickest.

Shifting the vehicle is not needed.

Draining happens right there, whether a driveway, a road near St Botolph's, or a layby on the way to Kirkthorne Wood.

Tricky to explain, like the back of Diamond Jubilee Memorial? Close to a county line? Checking beats guessing, and so ring.

## For Sutton drivers, the short version

Tip nothing until you have read the cap.

If AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank all the same, leave it off and ring 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel clears it where it waits, anywhere across North Yorkshire.
