# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Swalwell: How It Occurs and How to Avoid It

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? Then set this page down for now, leave your ignition and motor off, and phone 0333 366 0103.

A drain plus a thorough flush, carried out just where the car stands around Swalwell, is usually all it needs when found before the engine runs.

If you're reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it occurs and how to make sure it does not.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel motor need its own filler?

No single fluid but two: that is what many modern diesels around Swalwell and Axwell Park carry, with diesel for the engine.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into the exhaust gas to clean it.

Each tank has its own filler.

On a lot of cars the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

Filling your diesel side at the petrol pump happens all the time.

Seldom filled, AdBlue usually comes out of a bottle, poured by a driver who must stop and think which filler to use.

That gap is where the error lives.

## Swalwell: how AdBlue in the diesel tank occurs

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

Haste comes from the warning. The car warns you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank sends it into limp mode — so the top-up gets done in a rush, before work on a driveway off Brinkburn Avenue, or on the way home in the car park outside The Highlander.

Then, your hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old car — since a rental car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers somewhere your last one did not.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the pour after it has started.

Whether it happens in Whickham or the middle of Swalwell, it's the same few seconds.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

Before you pour anything, whether on a drive in Paradise or a forecourt in Swalwell, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- Blue and lettering: an AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually does not. Go by the cap, not its position.

- Plenty of vehicles give AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Plenty of motors say there which fuel goes where.

- Can't see it next to the diesel inlet? Then look below the bonnet or inside the boot — the owner's manual will say which.

- Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside Metrocentre.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

When the light goes on, wherever across Tyne and Wear, follow this routine.

- Pull in on level, motor off, with time in hand — not hurried on the side of Napier Road.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it does the trick.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Finish once the tank is topped up or the bottle is empty; until then, tip gently through its own spout.

- Only after that, start the vehicle: close the cap, check once more, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you have already poured into your diesel side.

Don't carry on to step five.

## Put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Swalwell already?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start the engine.

Don't switch your ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where the fuel is sucked from — so do not top up with diesel to thin it.

At a forecourt — BP, Esso or another — the staff will usually help push the vehicle away, when you ask.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own driveway around Swalwell.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if your engine has already run.

Swalwell lies under 5 miles from the Central Motorway East; there, use the first exit.

Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Newcastle upon Tyne, under 5 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Swalwell.

## Our arrival in Swalwell, and what occurs next

Our van reaches the vehicle wherever it has come to rest — your own driveway, beside Swalwell Community Centre, or by Swalwell Primary School.

The answers settle the work and the quote, and so we ask what got in, about how much, and if it's run.

You get that price by phone, before anyone heads out.

Your system is then purged thoroughly, after your tank is cleared.

Much more than with petrol, it counts here: the crystals form, some metals corrode, and none of that clears out unaided, however long it is left.

Once the fuel filter has been flushed — or replaced, if required — clean diesel goes in, and finally your car is tested.

Before leaving, our engineers fire it up and make sure that it's running properly.

Most jobs are finished in roughly half an hour after our engineers arrive, provided your engine has not run — and the pumps we use are fine on a live forecourt and quiet at night beside a house.

Payment happens on the day, not upfront, and you receive the paperwork your insurer asks for: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

It's worth looking at your insurance while we travel to you: misfuelling cover is included with many policies.

Wherever it sits — beside Holy Trinity Church, on a layby en route to Swalwell Park, at home — that's where it is cleared.

Assuming won't help at the back of Swalwell War Memorial, close to a border, or anywhere hard to pin down; ring and check.
