# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Swanbridge: Why It Occurs and How to Avoid It

Stop reading for a moment when the diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, and ring 0333 366 0103.

A drain and a full flush, done right where the vehicle sits in Swanbridge, is normally all it needs when caught before your engine runs.

Here in advance? In that case what follows covers why it comes about and how to stop it ever happening.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle: two tanks, two fillers

Plenty of newer diesels in Cosmeston, as well as Swanbridge, run on two fluids; the engine takes just your diesel.

Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into the exhaust stream and cleans it.

There is a filler for every tank.

Many of motors share a single flap for the two, whereas some move the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet.

At the petrol pump, the diesel side is topped up all the time.

Seldom filled, AdBlue usually goes in out of a bottle, tipped by someone who has to stop and think which cap it needs.

The mistake lives in that gap.

## Swanbridge: how AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place

Rarely is it carelessness: normally three things line up.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a warning from your car, and letting it run dry means limp mode — hence a hurried top-up, perhaps before work off Beach Road, or at The Captains Wife on the way home after work.

Then, your hand reaches for the cap it knew on the old vehicle — because a rental car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the pour once it has started.

Cog or the middle of Swanbridge: it is the same few seconds in both.

## The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

Before you pour anything, whether on a drive in Lower Penarth or a forecourt in Swanbridge, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap usually is not. Read it rather than going by position.

- On plenty of motors, the size gives it away: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- A label inside your fuel flap frequently says which fuel goes where, on plenty of motors. Check for it.

- The handbook. If your filler isn't by the diesel cap, it's in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Picking up a hire or company car, say at the car park at Dinas Powys? Ask whoever drove the car last before leaving, not when the light comes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

When the light goes on, wherever in The Vale of Glamorgan, use this routine.

- Pull in somewhere level, engine off, with time in hand — not rushing on the side of Lavernock Road.

- Find the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and speak the word "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly. It does the trick.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Shut the cap, then check again — making sure the diesel filler remained closed the whole time. Only then, start the vehicle.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you have already poured into the diesel side.

Step five stays off limits.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, around Swanbridge?

The short order of things, beginning with no starting your engine.

Leave the ignition off too, because on many diesels it by itself runs the pump.

Filling up with diesel won't thin it: rather than mixing, AdBlue drops to the base of your tank, right where fuel is taken from.

Ask the staff to help roll the car clear of the petrol pump if you are at a forecourt — the Cardiff Gas - autogas, the Texaco or somewhere else.

If you are on your own drive around Swanbridge, leave the car where it sits.

Where your engine has run already, stop somewhere safe then turn the car off.

Leave the M4 — under 10 miles out of Swanbridge — at the first exit.

Roughly how far did it go? Hopping across Swanbridge is smaller work than a run of under 10 miles to Cardiff, and so tell us.

## When we turn up around Swanbridge, what happens?

Outside the local primary school, close to Sully & Lavernock Community Library Trust or on your own drive: wherever your car has stopped, we come to it.

Which fluid got in, the quantity, and if it ran: our engineers ask since those replies set both work and quote.

You hear that quote by phone, before anyone heads out.

Next: a drain, then a thorough flush of the entire system.

More than with petrol, it matters here: the crystals form, some metals are attacked, and none of that clears away unaided, no matter how long it is left.

A test comes last: before that, clean diesel is added, and the filter is flushed or changed as needed.

We don't go until it has been started and is running correctly.

Using pumps fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs in which your engine hasn't run take roughly half an hour after our engineers arrive.

The insurer usually wants an engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and both are yours at the end. Payment comes on the day, with no money upfront.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.
