# Swindon: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your motor and the ignition off and call 0333 366 0103.

Usually, if the motor has not run, it's emptied and thoroughly purged where your car is around Swindon.

Reading in advance? Then the rest covers why it comes about and how to prevent it ever happening.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle, and its separate tank

No single liquid but two: that is what many newer diesels around Swindon and St Peters carry, with diesel feeding the engine.

The exhaust, not your engine, is where AdBlue goes: dosed into the fumes to fresh them, from a separate tank.

Each tank has its own filler.

Other cars put the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; plenty of others place both together behind one flap.

Diesel goes in at each filling station call-out, again and again.

Far less commonly, the AdBlue side gets filled — mostly from a bottle, by a person thinking about where it goes.

The slip lives in that gap.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank around Swindon: how it happens

Seldom is it carelessness: usually three things coincide.

Haste follows from the warning. The vehicle warns you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank puts the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up happens quickly, before work on a driveway off Quat Goose Lane, or on the way home in the car park outside The Ridge.

The old car's filler is where your hand reaches — but a rental car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers somewhere else. That's the second factor: a new vehicle.

Lastly, the bottle fits: a diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it goes in as easily, and once the tip begins, no part halts it.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Swindon or out in Wymans Brook.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

Look at these before pouring, on a forecourt in Swindon or a driveway out in Marle Hill. A few seconds, that's all.

- Where it sits can mislead; the cap doesn't. AdBlue ones tend to be blue or carry the name "AdBlue" — diesel caps usually don't.

- Many cars give AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.

- Look inside your fuel flap: many cars carry a label there saying which fuel goes where.

- In the boot or under the bonnet: that's where your filler sits if it is not by the diesel cap, and the handbook tells you which.

- Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Cheltenham Spa.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

When the light comes on, wherever in Gloucestershire, use this routine.

- Switch off once parked — flat ground, motor stopped, and never rushed beside Rivelands Road at the roadside.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after you find the AdBlue filler and reading it. Daft, yes, yet it does the trick.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave it on.

- Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.

- Only after that, start your car: close the cap, check again, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

Spot at step two or three that it's already gone into the diesel side? Then stop right there.

Never go on to step five.

## Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Swindon?

What follows is a short order of things, starting with not starting the motor.

Do not switch the ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Topping up with diesel won't thin it: instead, AdBlue sinks to the base of the tank, right where fuel is taken from.

Ask the staff to help push the car clear of the pump if you're on a forecourt — the Sainsbury's, the EG On the Move or anywhere else.

Your own drive around Swindon is where it stays.

If your engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

Come off the M5 — under 3 miles out of Swindon — at the first exit.

A short hop across Swindon is a smaller job than a run towards Gloucester, under 10 miles away, and so tell us roughly how far it went.

## Swindon: what occurs when our technicians arrive

Anywhere the vehicle has stopped, be it by Swindon Village Primary School, beside Swindon Village Hall or on your own drive, our van comes to it.

We ask what got in, about how much, and if it's run, since the replies decide this work and our quote.

That quote comes on the call, ahead of any van leaving.

Next: draining, then a full flush of the whole system.

Not like petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and eats at certain fuel-system metals, and neither clears away unaided. That is why it counts more.

The fuel filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

We don't go until it has been fired up and is running correctly.

Most jobs are done in about half an hour once we get there, as long as your motor hasn't run — and the pumps our engineers use are safe on a live forecourt yet quiet at night beside a house.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Wrong-fuel cover is part of plenty of insurance policies — so make use of the wait to look at yours.

The vehicle does not need to shift.

We drain it where it is — a side street close to Seasons Business and Leisure Complex, a lay-by on the way to Swindon Village Playing Field, a driveway.

Ring and ask instead of guessing if you are close to a border, or somewhere hard to explain, like the back of St Lawrence Church.
