# Why It Occurs and How to Avoid It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Syke

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? In that case put this page down a moment, leave the ignition and engine off, then phone 0333 366 0103.

A drain plus a full flush, done right where your car sits around Syke, is normally what it needs when caught before the motor runs.

Reading in advance? In that case the rest covers why it comes about and what to prevent it happening at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle: two tanks, two fillers

Many newer diesels on the roads around Syke and Buckley carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your engine.

AdBlue's own tank holds it, and from there it goes to the exhaust, where a spray cleans the fumes.

Each tank has one filler of its own.

Under one flap, next to each other: that's the layout on many motors. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler is beneath the bonnet or in the boot instead.

At the pump, the diesel side is topped up all the time.

A driver who has to stop and think where it goes normally tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less often.

That gap is where the error lives.

## Syke: how AdBlue in the diesel tank happens

Seldom is it carelessness: usually three things coincide.

Haste follows from the warning. Your car tells you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank puts it into limp mode — so the top-up happens quickly, before work on a driveway off Highcroft Way, or heading home in the car park outside Hunter's Rest.

Unfamiliar cars come next, as well. Hire cars, new vehicles and company motors place their fillers in new places, and habit reaches for the cap it used on the old one.

A spouted bottle meets no obstacle at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. So the pour, once begun, keeps on.

Whether it happens in Nar or the middle of Syke, it's the same few seconds.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

Be it a Syke forecourt or a drive over in Great Howarth, spend a couple of seconds on these before anything is poured in.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is often blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap usually isn't. Read it rather than going by position.

- The size. On many cars the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- Lift the filler flap and look for a label — many motors show which goes in each inlet right there.

- The handbook. If your filler isn't by the diesel cap, it's in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- The person who drove the vehicle last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park at Smithy Bridge, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

Anywhere around Greater Manchester the light comes on, here is a routine for that day.

- Not in a rush on the side of Ring Lows Lane, not on a slope, not with the engine running: park then switch off properly.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and say the word "AdBlue" out loud while unscrewing it. It sounds daft. It works.

- The diesel cap stays on. Where both sit under a flap, make sure it is closed before the bottle comes up.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Before starting the car, shut the cap and look again that the diesel cap never opened off.

Find at step two or three that it has already gone into your diesel side? Then stop just there.

Stage five stays off limits.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, in Syke?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start the motor.

Leave your ignition off as well, since on plenty of diesels switching it on alone runs the fuel pump.

Don't top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where your fuel is sucked from.

Ask the attendants to help roll the car away from the petrol pump if you are on a forecourt — the Texaco, the Shell or somewhere else.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own drive around Syke.

Already started? Stop once it's sensible, then switch off.

Leave the A627(M) — under 3 miles out of Syke — at the first junction.

A short hop across Syke is a smaller job than a run towards Manchester, under 15 miles away, so tell us about how far it went.

## Syke: what occurs when our technicians arrive

By Healey Foundation Primary School, near Thrum Hall or on your own driveway: wherever the car has stopped, we come to it.

Which liquid was put in, the quantity, and if it ran: our technicians ask because the answers set both work and quote.

No one heads out until you have heard our price by phone.

Then that tank is drained and the system cleaned thoroughly.

Not like petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and attacks some fuel-system metals, and neither washes out by itself. That is why it counts more.

Once the fuel filter is flushed — or replaced, where required — clean diesel is added, and then your car gets tested.

The motor is fired up next and tested to confirm it runs smoothly, all before our technicians go.

Most jobs are done in about half an hour after our engineers arrive, provided the engine hasn't run — and the pumps our technicians use are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet after dark beside a house.

No money in advance; you settle up on the day. At the end, a VAT invoice and the report from the engineer go to you for the insurer.

Wrong-fuel cover is included in many insurance policies — and so use the wait to look at yours.

## About Syke and where it is

## AdBlue drains across Greater Manchester, Syke included

Being a residential suburb, Syke shares its vans nearby areas — Lower Healey, Middle Healey — all the way through OL postcodes and the wider area around them.

Quote a postcode that starts OL12 9, and our van gets there fastest.

The car doesn't need to shift.

We drain it where it is — a side street near Christ Church, a lay-by on the way to Hey Wood, a drive.

If you are close to a border, or somewhere hard to describe like the back of Wardle War Memorial, ring and ask rather than assuming.

## The short version for Syke drivers

Before you pour, read the cap.

Even so AdBlue in your diesel tank? Petrol in Diesel can empty it wherever it is, anywhere around Greater Manchester: switch the vehicle off then ring 0333 366 0103.
