# Tadley: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

Keep your motor and ignition off and phone 0333 366 0103 now — the rest can wait if AdBlue is already in your diesel tank.

In Tadley, catching it before your motor turns normally leaves draining and a thorough flush where it stands.

If you are reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it occurs and how to make sure it doesn't.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle, and its separate tank

Many current diesels on the roads about Tadley and Tadley Hill carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the engine.

Your exhaust, not the engine, is where AdBlue goes: sprayed into the gas to fresh it, from a separate tank.

Each tank has its own filler.

Many of vehicles share a single flap for both, while others move the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet.

Filling the diesel side at the petrol pump goes on constantly.

Rarely topped up, AdBlue normally goes in out of a bottle, tipped by a driver who has to stop and think what cap to use.

It's in that gap that the error lives.

## How AdBlue in your diesel tank happens around Tadley

Seldom is it carelessness: normally three things line up.

Hurry follows from the warning. The car warns you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank puts the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up happens quickly, before work on a driveway off Newtown, or heading home in the car park at Fox And Hounds.

New-to-you motors come next, as well. Hire cars, new motors and company vehicles put their fillers differently, and the hand reaches for the cap it used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the tip after it has started.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Tadley or out in Heath End.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

A couple of seconds is all the checks take — so run through them before you tip anything, on a drive in Baughurst Common or a forecourt around Tadley.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap usually is not. Read it rather than going by position.

- Check the size: the smaller filler neck is, on plenty of vehicles, the AdBlue one.

- A label inside the fuel flap frequently says which fuel goes where, on many cars. Look for it.

- Cannot see it next to the diesel filler? Then look below the bonnet or inside the boot — the owner's manual will say which.

- The person who drove the vehicle last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park outside Midgham, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

The day the light goes on, wherever across Hampshire, use this routine.

- Stop on level, motor off, with time in hand — not rushing on the side of Meon Close.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it does the trick.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Slowly is best, through the bottle's own spout, until it is full or the bottle runs out.

- Close the cap and check once more. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start your car.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Do not go on to stage five.

## Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Tadley?

Short order, then. First: your engine remains unstarted.

On plenty of diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so don't switch it on.

Filling up with diesel won't weaken it: rather than mixing, AdBlue sinks to the base of that tank, just where fuel is taken from.

On a forecourt — Shell, Esso or any other — the staff will usually help roll your car away, if you ask.

On your own drive in Tadley? So the vehicle stays put.

If your engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

On the M4, under 10 miles from Tadley, that means the next exit.

A short hop across Tadley is a smaller job than a run towards Winchester, under 25 miles away, and so tell us about how far it went.

## Tadley: what takes place when we get there

Anywhere your car has stopped, whether outside Burnham Copse Primary School, beside Ambrose Allen Centre or on your own drive, our van comes to it.

Which fluid got in, the amount, and if it ran: our engineers ask since the replies set the work and price.

No one heads out before you've had our price over the phone.

Next: draining, then a thorough flush of the whole system.

More than with petrol, it matters here: crystals build up, some metals corrode, and none of it washes away on its own, however long it is left.

The fuel filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

After that we start the car and confirm it runs smoothly before we leave.

Most jobs are finished in roughly half an hour after our technicians get there, provided your motor has not run — and the pumps we use are safe on a busy forecourt and quiet at night outside a house.

No money in advance; you settle up that day. Afterwards, the VAT invoice and a report from the engineer go to you for the insurer.

Misfuelling cover is included in plenty of insurance policies — so use the wait to look at yours.
