# Tangmere: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

AdBlue in your diesel tank? Then leave the engine off — and your ignition as well.

Urea mixed in water is all AdBlue is.

As it is water-based, it will not ignite and won't blend with diesel; trouble only starts once your pump begins drawing it.

A drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Tangmere, is usually what AdBlue in a diesel tank needs — if it's caught before the engine has been run.

Nothing comes before ringing 0333 366 0103.

## Tangmere, AdBlue in your diesel tank: what to do at once

Do these:

- Remove the keys, which stops someone turning the electrics on.

- Near moving traffic? Then put the hazard lights on.

- Hold on to the receipt or the empty bottle, so you can tell us what got in and roughly how much.

- Ring us from where you are. A postcode starting PO20 2, or the name of the closest street, brings our van to you without a search.

Not to do:

- Don't start your engine, even for a moment to shift the vehicle.

- Plenty of diesels power their fuel pump the moment your ignition goes on, so leave it off.

- No extra fuel on top. The AdBlue will not mix, and so it is pointless.

- Don't drive the car anywhere, not even a short stretch along Tangmere Road.

- Don't try to drain the vehicle yourself at the kerbside.

Ask the attendants to help you move your vehicle away from the pumps if you are at a forecourt around Tangmere, whether it's the Esso or somewhere else.

At your own driveway, don't touch it at all.

## What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

AdBlue is made for your exhaust, not the engine.

Kept in a separate tank, it's squirted into the exhaust stream to clean the fumes.

Nothing in it is supposed to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is built to handle it.

Fuel mixes; AdBlue, once poured in, won't. Its behaviour is not at all like diesel's.

Heavier than diesel, it drops and pools below it — the very spot the pickup draws from.

Once the system runs, the AdBlue is first to be pulled through. Before then it waits beneath the diesel, and that is how a car filled in Strettington last night and never switched on stays the simple one, as long as no one touches the key.

It causes two kinds of harm from there.

Crystals and corrosion. As the water dries, it leaves urea that hardens in filters and narrow channels; and, since it attacks certain metals, every part it touches keeps suffering for as long as it remains inside.

Pipes carrying AdBlue spell harm by morning for a car sitting around Tangmere. Only in the tank, it stays stable.

The water in it does harm of its own: the high-pressure pump and your injectors depend on diesel to lubricate them, and water gives them nothing.

## Why is AdBlue in a diesel regularly the bigger fault?

An issue of thin fuel is what you get from filling a diesel with petrol from the Sainsbury's.

No harm comes while it sits unused, mixed into your diesel — only once your motor works on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a problem of the wrong substance altogether.

It cannot simply be run through, because it does not burn.

Nor can it be thinned, because it separates back out — and the following fill won't rinse away deposits or corrosion. So the flush counts for more with AdBlue, and turning your key "to see", in the centre of Tangmere or out in Halnaker, does more harm than almost any other mistake.

With AdBlue, the good news is no distinct from petrol.

Clearing a tank is the simplest part on a fuel system, and without start-up, the AdBlue stays in there — wherever in West Sussex the car sits.

## How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank around Tangmere?

After dark, two caps together — the AdBlue one and the diesel cap, now and then behind a single flap — can look the same. Nobody means it; plenty of layouts invite it.

Mostly it's not the forecourt: a driver buys a bottle heading home and tips it in at home.

It tends to happen in a couple of familiar ways.

Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard warns, and outside Tangmere Primary Academy the refill is rushed.

After work, a bottle is tipped in on a drive close to Malcolm Road.

Otherwise, in dim light outside Gribble Inn, the vehicle gets refilled by a driver using that flap the first time.

The least known cars get it most — rentals, new cars, fleet ones, and the spare vehicle of a home with both fuels.

Same mistake, an identical first response — keep it switched off — wherever you are in Tangmere or the remainder of West Sussex.

## Already started your engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank around Tangmere?

The AdBlue has left the tank, then.

The fuel filter and pipework have had it pulled along, and any running takes it on to the injection pump and every injector.

Maybe returning from Smith's Copse, or midway across Tangmere, your engine might run lumpy, smoke, drop pace, light up the dash or stall.

No restarting to test: pull over when safe, then turn it off.

More of that is pulled through with each start.

Tangmere sits under 15 miles from the Waterlooville Bypass; if you were on it, exit by the first junction and stop safely instead of driving on.

How far it went matters. A few hundred yards across Tangmere to the car park by St Andrew is a very different job from a run towards Chichester, under 3 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the fuel system with every mile.

Roughly how far had it come? Tell us.

There is more to clean out once the motor has been run, and we do all of it where the vehicle has stopped.

When it is caught quickly, permanent damage is very uncommon.

## What clearing AdBlue from a diesel involves around Tangmere

Our technicians come to your car, wherever it has stopped around Tangmere: a side street near Tangmere Military Aviation Museum, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt.

Which fluid went in, roughly the quantity, plus if the engine has turned over: we ask before all else, because those shape the job.

The polluted diesel and the urea come out together when that tank is drained, on the spot.

The system is purged thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, because what it leaves behind does not rinse out on its own.

A test of your car comes at the end, once clean diesel is added and the fuel filter is flushed or, if needed, swapped.

Engine not run? Then expect roughly half an hour once we are there for most jobs.

The pumps are explosion-proof, safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Clean diesel goes in to bleed the system, and that is the last step.

After that our engineers start the car and you drive off, whether from a parking bay outside Chichester or a driveway in Tangmere.

We confirm it runs smoothly on fresh diesel before leaving.

No garage is needed at any stage, with the whole job done on the spot.

You get a VAT invoice and an engineer report later, which is what insurers ask for.

## About Tangmere, briefly

Tangmere is a village in West Sussex, situated near the city of Chichester and close to the South Downs National Park. Tangmere sits at a low elevation of around 19 metres, in an area of gently sloping countryside. Tangmere has a mix of housing types, but terraced houses are particularly prevalent in the village. Tangmere is located near several other small villages, including Boxgrove and Oving.

## Tangmere and West Sussex: AdBlue drains across the area

Boxgrove, Oving and East Hampnett are among the places near Tangmere that the same vans reach, together with most of West Sussex beyond, over the PO postcode area.

Guessing doesn't help by a county line or anywhere hard to pin down; ring and check.

A mobile service fits Tangmere, a rural village: you have no need to take your car to us, since our technicians drain it there, on a driveway, a side street, a car park or a filling station.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Tangmere: the cost of fixing it

There is no fair single quote, since the jobs aren't the same.

Three things shift the price: whether your engine has been running and for how long, how much AdBlue got in, and where your car is. That last one rests on whether our van can reach it safely, and an open driveway is simpler than a tight gap behind Boxgrove Priory.

Which fluid was put in, what quantity, plus if the engine ran: each Tangmere enquiry opens by asking exactly those, before a figure, never after.

Once they are answered, a range becomes a single fixed figure.

Quoted by phone before the van sets out, the job is paid for that day — card or phone, no deposit.

Misfuelling cover comes with plenty of insurance policies, so it is worth looking at yours before the van arrives.

## Tangmere: still beside the car?

Then the most handy thing you can do is nothing to your car.

Keys out, engine off, ignition off.

Phone 0333 366 0103 and tell us it is AdBlue, about how much, and whether it's run. Petrol in Diesel takes it from there, around Tangmere or anywhere around West Sussex.
