# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Tansley Hill: Why It Occurs and How to Prevent It

Pause here a minute if the diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, and call 0333 366 0103.

A drain plus a full flush, done right where your car stands around Tansley Hill, is usually all it takes when caught before your engine runs.

Not happened yet? Further down, the page explains the reasons it takes place and the how to avoid it altogether.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel car

No single liquid but two: that's how many newer diesels around Tansley Hill and Kates Hill carry, with diesel feeding your engine.

Its own tank holds it, and from there it goes to the exhaust, and there a spray cleans the fumes.

There's a filler on every tank.

Under one flap, next to each other: that is the layout on many vehicles. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler sits beneath the bonnet or in the boot instead.

Topping up the diesel side at the pump goes on all the time.

Far less commonly, the AdBlue side is filled — normally from a bottle, by someone working out where it goes.

That gap is where the error lives.

## How does AdBlue in your diesel tank occur around Tansley Hill?

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

On a drive off Elizabeth Grove before work, or in the car park at The Bush Inn on the way home: that is where the hurried top-up takes place. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue gets low the car tells you, and once it is empty, limp mode follows.

The old car's cap is where your hand reaches — yet a rental car, a new motor or a company car keeps the fillers elsewhere. That's the second factor: a new vehicle.

No part stops the tip after it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

Whether it takes place in Cawney Hill or the middle of Tansley Hill, it is the same few seconds.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

A couple of seconds is all the checks take — so check them before you tip anything, on a driveway in Tividale Hall or a forecourt in Tansley Hill.

- Where it sits misleads; the cap does not. AdBlue caps tend to be blue or bear the word "AdBlue" — diesel ones normally do not.

- The size. On many motors the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- A label inside the fuel flap frequently says which fuel goes where, on many motors. Check for it.

- Can't find it beside the diesel filler? In that case check beneath the bonnet or in the boot — the handbook will say which.

- The previous driver knows. Ask as you pick up a hire car or fleet car — from Dudley Port's car park, perhaps — not once the warning appears.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

On the day the light appears — wherever it is around West Midlands — a routine to follow.

- Not in a rush on the side of Oakham Road, not on a slope, not with the motor running: park then switch off first.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it does the trick.

- The diesel cap remains on. Where both share a flap, confirm it's closed before the bottle comes up.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Before you start the car, close the cap and check again that your diesel cap never opened off.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you've already poured into the diesel side.

Never go on to stage five.

## Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Tansley Hill?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start the engine.

Leave the ignition off as well, since on many diesels it alone runs your pump.

Topping up with diesel will not dilute it: rather than mixing, AdBlue sinks to the bottom of that tank, right where the fuel is taken from.

The attendants at the nearest petrol station, Tesco or any forecourt will usually lend a hand to push your car clear if you ask.

At home around Tansley Hill? Then the car remains where it is.

When your motor has run already, pull over safely and turn the vehicle off.

Leave the M5 — under 3 miles out of Tansley Hill — at the first junction.

Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Wolverhampton, under 10 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Tansley Hill.

## Tansley Hill: what takes place when our technicians turn up

Wherever your car has stopped, whether outside Kates Hill Primary School, near St John's Worship Centre and Parish Hall or on your own drive, our van comes to it.

The answers decide this work and our quote, and so we ask what got in, about how much, and if it has run.

The quote comes over the phone, ahead of any van leaving.

Emptying that tank comes next, then a full flush of your system.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and attacks some fuel-system metals, and none of that washes out unaided. Hence it counts more.

After your filter has been cleaned — or renewed, where needed — clean diesel goes in, and finally your car is tested.

We don't go until it has been started and is running properly.

Unstarted vehicles mostly need a half-hour job after the moment we arrive. The equipment is fine on a busy forecourt, and hushed enough for a residential street late at night.

Paying happens on the day, not upfront, and you are given the documents your insurer asks for: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

It's worth checking your insurance as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover is included with many policies.
