# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Tattenhoe: Why It Happens

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? In that case put this page down a moment, leave the ignition and motor off, and call 0333 366 0103.

A drain and a full flush, carried out right where your vehicle sits in Tattenhoe, is usually what it takes when found before your engine runs.

Nothing happened yet? Further down, the page covers the reasons it happens and the how to prevent it for good.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel vehicle need its own filler?

Plenty of modern diesels on the roads round Tattenhoe and Emerson Valley carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your engine.

Your exhaust, not your motor, is where AdBlue ends up: dosed into the gas to fresh it, from its own tank.

Each tank has its own filler.

Under one flap, side by side: that is the layout on many cars. On others, AdBlue's filler sits under the bonnet or in your boot instead.

At the petrol pump, the diesel side is topped up all the time.

Far less frequently, the AdBlue side is filled — normally from a bottle, by a person working out where it goes.

The slip lives in that gap.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank around Tattenhoe: how it occurs

It's rarely carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a warning from the vehicle, and letting it run out means limp mode — so a hurried top-up, maybe before work off Pendeen Crescent, perhaps outside Prince George on the way home after work.

Unfamiliar motors come next, too. Rentals, new cars and company vehicles place their fillers differently, and habit goes for the cap used on the old one.

Lastly, the spout fits: a diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it goes in just as readily, and after the pour starts, nothing halts it.

It's seconds, be it in Tattenhoe Park or right in the centre of Tattenhoe.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

A couple of seconds is all the checks take — so run through them before you pour anything, on a driveway in Kingsmead or a forecourt in Tattenhoe.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap usually isn't. Read it rather than going by where it sits.

- Look at the size: the smaller filler neck is, on plenty of cars, the AdBlue one.

- Lift the filler flap and check for a label — plenty of motors mark which goes in which inlet right there.

- In your boot or under the bonnet: that is where the filler sits if it's not by your diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Bletchley.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

When the light comes on, anywhere across Buckinghamshire, follow this routine.

- Switch off after you park — flat ground, engine stopped, and not rushed by V1 Snelshall Street on the verge.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it does the trick.

- The diesel cap stays on. When both share a flap, make sure it's closed before the bottle comes up.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Before you start the car, close the cap and look a second time that your diesel cap never came off.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Step five is out.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, around Tattenhoe?

Do not start your motor: that is how the short order of things begins.

Don't switch the ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where your fuel is pulled from — so do not top up with diesel to thin it.

Ask the staff to help push the vehicle away from the petrol pump if you're on a forecourt — the Morrisons, the BP or anywhere else.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own driveway around Tattenhoe.

When your engine has been run by now, pull over somewhere safe and switch the vehicle off.

On the M1, under 10 miles from Tattenhoe, that means the next exit.

A short hop across Tattenhoe is a smaller job than a run towards Milton Keynes, under 5 miles away, and so tell us about how far it went.

## What takes place when we turn up around Tattenhoe

Our technicians come to the vehicle wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside Giles Brook Primary School, near Tattenhoe Pavilion or on your own drive.

Our technicians ask what got in, roughly how much, and whether it has run, since those replies decide the work and the price.

That quote is given on the call, ahead of any van leaving.

Draining that tank comes next, followed by a full flush of the fuel system.

More than with petrol, it matters here: the crystals form, some metals corrode, and nothing washes out unaided, however long it sits.

The fuel filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

Before we leave, our technicians fire it up and make sure that it's running correctly.

Using pumps safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs where the engine hasn't run take about half an hour once we arrive.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Misfuelling cover is part of many insurance policies — and so use the wait to look at yours.
