# The Bell: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

Stop reading for a moment when the diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, then call 0333 366 0103.

Caught before your motor runs, it is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around The Bell.

The rest of this page covers why it takes place and how to ensure it does not — handy if you're reading ahead of time.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel car

Not one liquid but two: that is how many modern diesels around The Bell and Redwood carry, with diesel feeding your engine.

Your exhaust, not the motor, is where AdBlue ends up: sprayed into the fumes to clean them, from its own tank.

Each tank has its own filler.

Many of vehicles share a single flap for the two, whereas some put the AdBlue filler to the boot or under the bonnet.

Topping up the diesel side at the pump happens constantly.

The AdBlue side is topped up far less frequently, usually from a bottle, and usually by somebody who has to stop and think where it goes.

That gap is where the slip lives.

## The Bell: how AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place

Seldom is it carelessness: normally three things coincide.

Hurry follows from the warning. Your car tells you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank puts the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up gets done quickly, before work on a drive off Arnside Road, or on the way home in the car park outside Kitt Green Tavern.

Then, the hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old motor — since a hire car, a new car or a company car places the fillers where your last one did not.

Third, the spout fits: diesel filler or AdBlue one, it goes in as readily, and once the pour begins, no part halts it.

It takes a few seconds, whether out in Kitt Green or bang in the heart of The Bell.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Before you pour anything, whether on a drive in Orrell or a forecourt around The Bell, check these. They take a few seconds.

- Where it sits can mislead; the cap does not. AdBlue caps are often blue or carry the name "AdBlue" — diesel ones usually do not.

- Look at the size: the smaller neck is, on many motors, the AdBlue one.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Plenty of vehicles say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook shows where it is if your filler isn't next to the diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- The person who drove the car last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park outside Gathurst, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

Wherever in Greater Manchester the light comes on, here is a routine for the day.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with your engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Porters Wood Close.

- Silly as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap works — once you've located your filler and read the cap.

- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.

- Only then, start the car: close the cap, check again, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

Discover during the second or third step that AdBlue went in the diesel tank? That is where you stop.

Never carry on to step five.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, in The Bell?

Do not start your motor: that is where the short order of things starts.

Leave your ignition off too, since on many diesels switching it on by itself starts the fuel pump.

Filling up with diesel won't thin it: rather than mixing, AdBlue drops to the bottom of that tank, right where fuel is taken from.

Ask the staff to help roll the car away from the pump if you're on a forecourt — the Esso, the BP or anywhere else.

On your own drive in The Bell? So your car remains put.

Where your engine has run by now, stop safely then turn the vehicle off.

On the M6, under a mile from The Bell, that means the next exit.

Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Preston, under 15 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across The Bell.

## Our arrival in The Bell, and what occurs next

Wherever the vehicle has stopped, whether outside Orrell Lamberhead Green Academy, near St Francis of Assisi or on your own drive, the van travels to it.

Both the work and our price depend on three answers — which liquid, which amount, and whether it's run — so we ask.

No one sets off before you've heard the price by phone.

The fuel system is then rinsed thoroughly, after the tank is cleared.

Not like petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and attacks some fuel-system metals, and none of that washes away by itself. Hence it matters more.

Testing comes last: before that, clean diesel goes in, and the filter is flushed or changed if necessary.

The engine is fired up next and tested to confirm it runs correctly, all before we leave.

Unstarted cars mostly mean a half-hour visit after the moment we arrive. The kit is safe on a busy filling station, and hushed enough for a driveway after dark.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.

## AdBlue drains about The Bell, and Greater Manchester beyond

Being a residential suburb, The Bell has the same vans as nearby places — Lamberhead Green, Norley — right across WN postcodes and the wider area beyond.

Fastest of all: quote a WN5 0 postcode to the van.

Shifting the car isn't needed.

Anywhere it sits — near Saint John the Divine, on a layby heading to Oldam's Fold, on a drive — that's where it is emptied.

Ring and ask rather than assuming if you're close to a boundary, or somewhere hard to describe, like the back of Orrell Bookcycle.

## In short, for The Bell motorists

Read the cap before you pour.
