# The Bridge: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? Then put this page aside a moment, leave the ignition and motor off, then ring 0333 366 0103.

A drain and a thorough flush, done just where the vehicle sits around The Bridge, is normally what it takes when caught before your motor runs.

Nothing happened yet? Further down, the page explains the why it happens and the ways to avoid it for good.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel car need its own filler?

Diesel goes to your motor — yet plenty of modern diesels seen round The Bridge and Dartford Marshes carry another liquid as well.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into your exhaust stream to clean it.

Each tank has its own filler.

On a lot of motors the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

The diesel side is fuelled at the petrol pump all the time.

Someone who has to stop and think where it goes normally fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less regularly.

That gap is where the error lives.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank around The Bridge: how it occurs

It is seldom carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

Haste comes from the warning. The car warns you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank sends the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up gets done quickly, before work on a driveway off Halcrow Avenue, or on the way home in the car park at The Hufflers Arms.

Unfamiliar cars are next, too. Rentals, new cars and company cars put their fillers in new places, and habit goes for the cap it used on the old one.

A spouted bottle finds no obstacle at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. And so the pour, once begun, keeps on.

Whether it takes place in Temple Hill or the middle of The Bridge, it is the same few seconds.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

A few seconds is all these take — so run through them before you pour anything, on a driveway in New Town or a forecourt around The Bridge.

- Read the cap rather than going by position: AdBlue caps are commonly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps usually aren't.

- Many vehicles fit AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.

- Open the flap and look for a label — many cars mark what belongs in each inlet just there.

- Can't find it next to your diesel inlet? Then check below the bonnet or in the boot — the owner's manual says where.

- Picking up a hire or company car, say at the car park outside Dartford? Check with whoever drove it last before you set off, rather than once the light comes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever around Kent that is.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with your motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Marsh Street North.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and speak the word "AdBlue" out loud while you unscrew it. It sounds daft. It does the trick.

- The diesel cap remains on. When the two share a flap, make sure it is shut before the bottle comes up.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap, then look again — making sure your diesel filler stayed closed the whole time. Only then, start your car.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Don't go on to step five.

## Put AdBlue in your diesel tank around The Bridge already?

What follows is a short order of things, starting with not starting your motor.

Leave the ignition off as well, because on many diesels it by itself runs your pump.

Do not top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is sucked from.

The staff at Shell, BP or any forecourt will normally lend a hand to push the car away when you ask.

Your own drive around The Bridge is the place it should stay.

If the motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

Come off the M25 — under 3 miles out of The Bridge — at the first exit.

A short hop across The Bridge is a smaller job than a run towards London, under 15 miles away, so tell us roughly how far it went.

## When our engineers arrive in The Bridge, what takes place?

The van reaches the car wherever it has come to rest — your own driveway, near Mermaid, or by Dartford Bridge Community Primary School.

What fluid got in, the amount, and whether it ran: we ask since the answers decide both work and quote.

The price is given on the call, ahead of any van leaving.

Draining your tank comes next, then a thorough flush of the fuel system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own — which is why that counts more with AdBlue than with petrol.

Testing is last: before that, fresh diesel is added, and the fuel filter is cleaned or changed as needed.

After that we fire it up and confirm it runs properly before we leave.

Most jobs are done in roughly half an hour once our engineers arrive, provided your motor has not run — and the pumps we use are safe on a live forecourt and quiet at night beside a house.

Payment is on the day, not upfront, and you are given the paperwork an insurer wants: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

Misfuelling cover is part of many insurance policies — and so make use of the wait to look at yours.

## AdBlue drains round The Bridge, and Kent beyond

Dartford and Crossways are among the towns near The Bridge, a residential suburb, that the same teams cover, over DA postcodes.

A postcode starting DA1 5 gets the van to you fastest.

Your car doesn't need to move.

We drain it where it is — a side street near Dartford (Cambria) Sea Scout Group, a lay-by on the way to Enchanted Woodland, a driveway.

Guessing doesn't help at the back of New Life Christian Community, close to a border, or somewhere awkward to pin down; ring and check.

## The short version for The Bridge people

Pour nothing until you've read the cap.
