# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in The Butts: Why It Occurs

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your motor and the ignition off and call 0333 366 0103.

Normally, if your engine has not turned, it's drained and fully flushed where the car sits in The Butts.

Reading in advance? Then the rest explains how it comes about and how to prevent it happening at all.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel vehicle

Plenty of newer diesels in Cottles Oak, like those in The Butts, carry on two fluids; the motor takes only the diesel.

AdBlue's own tank holds it, and from there it is sent to the exhaust, and there a spray cleans the gas.

There is a filler on every tank.

Many of vehicles have a single flap for both, whereas others move the AdBlue filler to the boot or under the bonnet.

Diesel gets filled on every forecourt visit, week in, week out.

Much less often, the AdBlue side is filled — mostly from a bottle, by someone working out where it goes.

The mistake grows in the gap between them.

## How does AdBlue in your diesel tank occur around The Butts?

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and if it runs out altogether, the car goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Marston Lane before work, or in the car park outside The Crown Inn on the way home.

The old car's cap is where the hand reaches — but a hire car, a new car or a company car keeps the fillers elsewhere. That's the second thing: a strange car.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the tip after it has started.

The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of The Butts or out in Critchill.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Before you tip anything, whether on a driveway in Little Keyford or a forecourt in The Butts, check these. They take a few seconds.

- Check the cap instead of going by position: AdBlue caps are frequently blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel ones normally are not.

- The size. On many motors the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- Lift the flap and check for a label — many vehicles mark what goes in which inlet just there.

- In the boot or under the bonnet: that's where your filler sits if it is not by the diesel cap, and the handbook tells you which.

- Picking up a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park outside Frome? Ask whoever drove the vehicle last before you set off, rather than when the light goes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever in Somerset that is.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with your motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Green Lane.

- Silly as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" out loud while you unscrew the cap works — after you have located the filler and read it.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave it on.

- Gently is best, through the bottle's own spout, till it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check again. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the car.

Find at the second or third step that AdBlue went in the diesel tank? That's where you stop.

Stage five stays out.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, around The Butts?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start your motor.

On plenty of diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so don't switch it on.

Thinning it with extra diesel fails, since AdBlue sinks to the bottom rather than blending — and that is where your fuel is pulled from.

If you are at a forecourt, whether it is the Sainsbury's or the Texaco, ask the staff to help roll the car away from the petrol pump.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own drive in The Butts.

Already run? Pull over when it's safe, then switch off.

On the M4, under 25 miles from The Butts, that means the next junction.

Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Bath, under 15 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across The Butts.

## Our arrival around The Butts, and what occurs next

Wherever your car has stopped, be it by Avanti Park School, beside Christ Church or at home, the van travels to it.

Those replies determine this work and our quote, and so we ask what was put in, about how much, and whether it's run.

During the call itself, you hear our price — ahead of dispatch.

After that: draining, then a full flush of the whole system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why the flush matters more here than with petrol.

The fuel filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

Before leaving, our technicians fire it up and make sure that it is running properly.

If the engine hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Before we get there, have a look at your policy; many carry cover for misfuelling.

There's no need to shift the vehicle.

Our engineers drain it where it is — a side street near Frome Town Council, a lay-by on the way to Victoria Park, a drive.

Ring and ask rather than guessing if you are near a border, or somewhere hard to describe, like the back of Frome Town Hall.
