# The Grange: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

Motor off, ignition off: that's how you start if AdBlue has got into your diesel tank.

AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

As it is water-based, it will not burn and never combines with diesel; trouble only starts when the pump begins drawing it.

Caught before the engine has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around The Grange.

First, call us on 0333 366 0103.

## Those opening minutes: AdBlue in your diesel tank in The Grange

Do these:

- Take your keys out, and so nobody switches the ignition on.

- If you are anywhere close to moving traffic, put your hazards on.

- The empty bottle or the till receipt tells us the product and the amount, so don't throw it away.

- Ring right where you are. Say a EH9 2 postcode or the closest street sign, and no one has to search for you.

Never do these:

- Not even briefly, and not to roll your vehicle: the engine remains off.

- Switching your key to ignition alone starts the pump going on plenty of diesels. Avoid it.

- AdBlue doesn't dilute in diesel — it separates out — so adding more diesel will not weaken it.

- Never drive it anywhere, not even a short distance up Hope Terrace.

- Don't try to drain the vehicle yourself at the roadside.

On a forecourt in The Grange, whether it is the BP or another one, ask the attendants to help you push your car clear of the pump.

At your own driveway, do not move it at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

The engine isn't what AdBlue is made for; the exhaust is.

It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into your exhaust gas to fresh it.

Nothing inside a fuel pump is designed for this fluid — and no part of it was intended to go that way.

It doesn't combine. After it is tipped into the tank, AdBlue acts nothing like diesel.

It drops, since it is heavier than diesel, and pools low where the pickup takes its fuel from.

Easiest of all: one that had AdBlue in Bruntsfield overnight and has not turned since. The liquid waits at the foot of the tank, undrawn — but it will be first through if your motor starts, before any diesel at all.

After it is sucked in, the harm takes two forms.

It attacks some metals found in fuel systems, attacking whatever it reaches till it is removed from the system. And once the water goes, the urea forms crystals that block filters and lodge in tiny passages.

A motor left sitting around The Grange with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue only in its tank isn't.

Water protects nothing. The high-pressure pump and each injector depend on diesel flowing past them, and so the water content harms them in its own right.

## Why is AdBlue in a diesel commonly the bigger issue?

Fill a diesel with petrol in error over at the JET, and this issue is thinned fuel.

It mixes with the diesel, and while it's inside the tank it causes no damage; the damage comes from running your engine on it.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the fluid itself is simply the wrong one.

It cannot just be run through, since it doesn't burn.

Nor can it be thinned, because it splits back out — and the next fill won't rinse away deposits or corrosion. So the flush counts for more with AdBlue, and trying the engine "to see", in the centre of The Grange or out in Blackford, does more harm than nearly any other slip.

As with petrol, there is good news.

If the motor hasn't run, the AdBlue is still in that tank, and that tank is the easiest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever across City of Edinburgh your car is sitting.

## How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank around The Grange?

After dark, two caps side by side — the AdBlue cap and the diesel cap, occasionally under a single flap — can appear the same. Nobody means it; plenty of designs allow it.

A bottle picked up when driving home and poured in at home, instead of at the filling station, is the usual route.

Usually, it happens in one of a few familiar ways.

Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard flags it up, and outside the local primary school the top-up is rushed.

Someone tips the bottle in at home, just off Kilgraston Road, as the day ends.

Or a driver unfamiliar with that flap refills your car in dim light, parked in the car park by The Earl of Marchmont.

Hired cars, new vehicles, company vehicles, or the spare car in a home with both fuels: the least familiar cars get it most.

Keep it off: that's the first response to the same slip, anywhere in The Grange or the remainder of City of Edinburgh you are.

## The Grange: started the engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Then the AdBlue has left that tank.

Through the fuel filter, along the lines, and — with any running time — into the high-pressure pump and every injector: that is where it has gone.

You may notice your motor running unevenly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, maybe on the way back from Carlton Cricket Club or halfway across The Grange.

Once you safely can, stop and switch it off — with no restarting to test.

Each start pulls more of that through.

On the M8, under 5 miles from The Grange, the next junction is where to leave, and anywhere sensible is where to park — not carrying on.

Hopping across The Grange to the car park by Marchmont St Giles Parish Church is one thing; driving for Edinburgh, under 3 miles away, is something else, since each mile pushes the AdBlue further in. So distance matters.

Roughly how far had it come? Tell us.

Our engineers do all of the cleaning where the car has ended up, and once the motor has been started there is more of it.

When it is caught early, long-term damage is very rare.

## What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in The Grange?

Anywhere it has come to rest around The Grange — a forecourt, a layby, a driveway, a road by JK Rowling — the van travels to the car.

Three replies decide the job, and so first our technicians ask what went in, roughly what quantity, and whether the engine has turned over.

On the spot, your tank is then emptied, and both the polluted diesel and the urea leave at once.

What remains from AdBlue won't wash out unaided, and so the fuel system gets a careful flush, which matters far more here than with petrol.

A test of your vehicle follows at the end, once clean diesel goes in and your filter is flushed or, where necessary, replaced.

Most of these jobs are a half-hour visit once we arrive, provided your engine has not run.

Low-noise enough to use outside a house at night, and safe on a busy forecourt, the pumps are explosion-proof.

The final step is to bleed the fuel system on clean diesel.

You head off as soon as our technicians have fired it up, and it makes no difference whether the vehicle is on a drive in The Grange or in a bay outside Haymarket.

We make sure it runs correctly on new diesel before we leave.

The whole job is done where your car is, so it never needs to go to a garage.

Insurers ask for a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and you get both afterwards.

## The Grange and City of Edinburgh: AdBlue drains across the area

Throughout the EH postcode area, the vans answering AdBlue jobs in The Grange reach most of City of Edinburgh as well, Marchmont, Grange Park and Sciennes among them.

Assuming doesn't help close to a county line or anywhere tricky to describe; phone and check.

The Grange is a residential suburb, and a call-out drain suits it: whether the car is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, our engineers drain it where it is, and so it never needs to be shifted to us.

## The Grange: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Since the jobs vary, a single price wouldn't be honest.

The cost moves first with how long, if at all, your engine has been running, and next with the quantity of AdBlue that was put in. After that it rests on where your car is and whether our van can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open drive than in a tight spot behind Saint Catherine's Argyle.

With that reason, every enquiry from The Grange begins by asking the same trio — what went in, what quantity, whether the engine ran — before any quote.

Those replies turn a range into a straight price.

The price is quoted during the call, before a van leaves; settling up comes on the day, by card or over the phone, and nothing upfront.

Check your policy while we are on the way: many carry misfuelling cover.

## Beside your car in The Grange, right now?

Right now, the most helpful thing to do with your vehicle is to leave it.

Keys out, motor off, ignition off.

Petrol in Diesel handles the remainder, across The Grange or anywhere in City of Edinburgh, after you phone 0333 366 0103 to say it's AdBlue, roughly what quantity, and whether it ran.
