# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in The Green? Don't Start It

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, the ignition remains off and so does the engine.

Water with urea dissolved in it: that's AdBlue.

Not like fuel, it neither burns nor blends, and no harm happens till the motor sucks it round.

A drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around The Green, is generally all AdBlue in a diesel tank needs — if it is caught before your motor has been run.

Phone 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

## What to do straight away, The Green: AdBlue in your diesel tank

To do:

- Keys out — that way no one can switch anything on.

- Near moving traffic? So put your hazards on.

- The empty bottle or the receipt tells us the fluid and the quantity, so do not throw it away.

- The van locates you fastest with a postcode starting S36 6, or just the name of a street nearby, and so call from the spot.

Never do these:

- Moving your vehicle just a short way is no reason to start the engine.

- Plenty of diesels run their pump the instant your ignition comes on, and so leave it off.

- Don't top up with diesel to thin it. AdBlue does not dilute in diesel; it separates out.

- Even a short distance down Unwin Crescent is too far to drive it.

- No draining it yourself, either, at the roadside.

The attendants on duty at any The Green forecourt — the Texaco among them — will normally lend a hand rolling it aside if you ask.

Parked on your own driveway? Then it remains just where it is.

## What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

AdBlue is made for the exhaust, not the motor.

It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into your exhaust gas to clean it.

Nothing in it is meant to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is made to handle it.

Poured in with your diesel, it stays separate rather than mixing — entirely different from fuel.

The pickup takes fuel from the deepest part of the tank, and that's exactly where AdBlue ends up: as it is denser than diesel, it sinks.

When your system runs, the AdBlue is first to be pulled through. Before then it waits beneath the diesel, which is how a car filled in Bridge End last night and never switched on remains the simple one, as long as no one turns the key.

Two kinds of harm come from there.

It eats at certain metals found in fuel components, attacking any part it reaches until it's removed from the system. And when the water evaporates, the urea turns into crystals that clog filters and lodge in narrow channels.

If the AdBlue is in the lines, waiting overnight around The Green leaves it worse. In the tank only, time costs nothing.

Then there's the water: it brings no protection to the components that need it most — the injection pump and every injector.

## Why AdBlue in a diesel is frequently more major than petrol

Put petrol in a diesel at the Cecil Penney Ltd and you have a problem of thin fuel.

It mixes with the diesel, and while it is inside your tank it does no harm; the harm comes from running the engine on it.

The issue with AdBlue in a diesel is a totally wrong substance.

It can't simply be run through, because it doesn't burn.

Whether the vehicle is in Spring Vale or the centre of The Green, turning it over "to see" costs more with AdBlue than nearly any other slip, and the flush matters for more. The reasons: it won't remain mixed, and so diluting it is impossible; and crystals and corrosion survive the following fill.

The same good news holds as with petrol.

Anywhere around South Yorkshire your car has stopped, an unstarted motor means the AdBlue still in the tank: the simplest bit of any fuel system to empty.

## The Green: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

In dim light, two caps side by side — the AdBlue one and the diesel cap, occasionally under a single flap — may look the same. No one intends it; plenty of designs invite it.

A container picked up when heading home and tipped in at home, rather than at the filling station, is the typical story.

Usually, it happens in one of a few familiar ways.

A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up happens in a hurry outside Penistone St John's Voluntary Aided Primary School.

A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Green Road.

Another version: darkness, a pub car park by Penistone Brewery and Taphouse, and a driver opening that flap for the first time.

It occurs most in the vehicles motorists know least: a hire car, a new vehicle, a company car, or the second car of a household with one diesel and one petrol.

Anywhere around South Yorkshire, The Green as well, the slip doesn't change, and nor does the first step: leave it switched off.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank around The Green, and your engine started?

If so, the AdBlue is no longer inside that tank.

It has been sucked through the filter and your lines, and if your engine ran for any time, it has reached the high-pressure pump and your injectors.

Lumpy running, smoke from the exhaust, dropping power, dashboard warnings or stalling: each might show up, maybe part way across The Green or returning from Penistone Recreation Ground.

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart the car to check.

Every start pulls more of it through.

The Green sits under 5 miles from the M1; if you were on it, leave by the next junction and stop somewhere safe instead of carrying on.

Each mile pushes the AdBlue further in. That's why a hop across The Green to park near Penistone Family Hub and a drive of under 15 miles towards Sheffield are such different jobs.

Let us know roughly how far it had come.

There is more to clean out once your engine has been run, and our engineers do all of it where your car has stopped.

Very seldom does it leave long-term damage when it is noticed quickly.

## What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve around The Green?

We come to your car, wherever it has stopped around The Green: a side street close to St Andrew's, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt.

Before anything else our technicians ask what went in, about how much, and if your motor has run, because those replies decide this work.

Then your tank is emptied where the car waits, and so the polluted fuel and the AdBlue come out together.

A careful flush matters much more after AdBlue than with petrol, since residue will not wash away on its own.

After that, the fuel filter: flushed, or replaced when it has to be. Then clean diesel, then a check of your car.

Roughly half an hour once we arrive is usual for most jobs where your engine has not run.

The equipment is explosion-proof, so a live filling station is no fault, and it is hushed enough for a residential street after dark.

Last, your system is bled with clean diesel.

Then our technicians start it and you set off, whether from a parking bay at Penistone or a driveway in The Green.

Before leaving, our engineers make sure it's running correctly with new diesel in.

Our engineers do it all wherever your car has ended up, and it never has to be taken to a garage.

You receive a VAT invoice and an engineer report after that, which is what insurers ask for.

## What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out in The Green?

No single price would be honest, because every job is different.

Whether your engine has been running, and for how long, comes first in what shifts the cost. How much AdBlue was put in comes next, and then the position of the car, since an open drive is simpler for a technician to get to safely than a tight spot behind Penistone Library.

Which fluid got in, what quantity, plus if the engine ran: every The Green enquiry begins by asking precisely those, ahead of a figure, not afterwards.

The replies turn a range into a straight quote.

You hear that quote by phone, before anyone sets off, and you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront.

Look at your insurance while we are on the way: plenty include misfuelling cover.

## In The Green and still alongside your car?
