# The Heath: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, your ignition remains off and so does the motor.

Water with urea mixed in it: that's AdBlue.

Being water-based, it will not ignite and never combines with diesel; damage only starts once the pump begins drawing it.

Caught before your motor has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in The Heath.

Call 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank in The Heath: the first few minutes

To do:

- Pull the keys out, and so no one switches the ignition on.

- Near moving traffic? Then put the hazard lights on.

- So you can give us which liquid it was and about how much, save the till receipt or the empty bottle.

- Tell us a postcode starting ST14 7, or whichever street is nearest, and the van reaches you straight — so ring from wherever you stand.

Don't:

- No starting the motor — not briefly, not to shift your vehicle.

- Many diesels run their fuel pump the instant your ignition comes on, and so leave it off.

- AdBlue does not mix in diesel — it separates out — so adding more diesel won't thin it.

- Leave the vehicle where it is instead of driving it anywhere, even a short distance up Bowling Green Road.

- Emptying your tank yourself by the road is not one to try.

Moving your vehicle away from the pumps is a job for staff to help with, whichever The Heath forecourt you're on, the Esso included.

Parked on your own driveway? Then it stays just where it is.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

Meant for your exhaust, AdBlue has no business in your engine.

Stored in a separate tank, it is injected into the exhaust to clean the fumes.

A fuel pump is not made to cope with it, and AdBlue was never supposed to travel through one.

Inside a diesel tank it behaves really differently from fuel. It does not mix in.

The pickup sucks fuel from the deepest part of the tank, and that's just where AdBlue settles: being denser than diesel, it sinks.

Easiest of all: one that had AdBlue in Spath last night and hasn't turned since. The liquid sits at the base of that tank, untouched — but it will be the first thing through if the motor runs, before any diesel at all.

It does two kinds of damage from there.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it is corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, and so it keeps running on the parts it reaches for as long as it stays there.

If the AdBlue is in the pipework, leaving it till morning around The Heath makes it worse. In the tank only, waiting does nothing.

Water protects nothing. The injection pump and every injector depend on diesel flowing past them, so the water content harms them by itself.

## AdBlue in a diesel: why it's often worse than petrol

Put petrol in a diesel at the Shell and you have a problem of thin fuel.

No harm is done as long as it sits put, mixed into the diesel — only once your engine works on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is an issue of the wrong substance altogether.

Since it doesn't burn, running it through is not an option.

Whether your vehicle sits in Balance Hill or the centre of The Heath, turning it over "to see" does more harm in this case than almost any other slip, and the flush matters for more. Why: it won't stay blended, and so diluting it is impossible; and deposits and corrosion outlast the next fill.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

Never started? Then the AdBlue sits just in that tank, the easiest bit of the entire system to clear, anywhere your car has stopped across Staffordshire.

## The Heath: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

Plenty of cars place the AdBlue cap beside the diesel cap, occasionally behind one flap, and after dark the two may look the same. Nobody means it.

It mostly takes place outside the house, from a container grabbed en route home, rather than at the filling station.

The ways it takes place are few and familiar.

The top-up gets hurried outside St Mary's CofE (A) First School, after your dash flashed with a warning as the kids were taken in.

A driver tips the container in outside their house, just off Cross Road, as the day ends.

Otherwise, after dark outside The Three Tuns, the car gets topped up by a driver using that flap the first time.

It happens most in the cars people know least: a hire car, a new motor, a company car, or the second vehicle of a household with one diesel and one petrol.

Wherever you are around The Heath or the rest of Staffordshire, it is the same slip and the same first answer: leave it off.

## The Heath: started the motor with AdBlue in your diesel tank?

In that case, the AdBlue is no longer in that tank.

With any running time, it goes on to the high-pressure pump and each injector, having passed through the fuel filter and lines.

Rough running, smoke from the exhaust, dropping power, dashboard warnings or stalling: any might appear, perhaps midway across The Heath or returning from Princess Rec.

Pull over when safe. Switch off. Leave the vehicle off rather than testing it again.

Each start pulls more of that through.

The Heath sits under 15 miles from the M6; if you were on it, leave by the next junction and stop somewhere safe instead of driving on.

Hopping across The Heath to the car park by Heath Mission Church is one thing; heading towards Stoke-on-Trent, under 15 miles away, is another, since each mile carries the AdBlue further in. So mileage matters.

Let us know about how far it had come.

Wherever the vehicle came to a stop is where all of it gets done, even with more to rinse out once your engine has been running.

Noticed quickly, it very seldom leaves long-term damage.

## Clearing AdBlue in a diesel around The Heath: what it takes

A road by Heath Community Center, a driveway, a layby or a forecourt: wherever the car has stopped in The Heath, our technicians travel to it.

The work rests on three replies, which we get first — what went in, the quantity, and if your motor has run.

Then your tank is drained where your car sits, so the tainted fuel and the AdBlue come out together.

Residue from AdBlue won't flush out by itself, and so the fuel system gets a full flush, which counts far more with urea than for petrol.

Clean diesel goes in once the filter is flushed — or replaced, if it needs to be — and after that the car is tested.

Not run? Then expect about half an hour once we are there for most jobs.

Explosion-proof pumps mean a busy forecourt sensible to work on, and they run quiet enough not to disturb the street at night.

The last step is to prime the fuel system on new diesel.

You head off as soon as our technicians have started it, and it makes no difference whether the vehicle is on a driveway in The Heath or in a bay by Uttoxeter.

The test before our engineers go is that it runs correctly on new diesel.

As the job is done in its entirety where the vehicle is, a workshop never comes into it.

You get a VAT invoice and an engineer report later, which is what insurers ask for.

## About The Heath

The Heath is a suburban area situated on the riverside in Staffordshire, with an elevation of 102 metres. The Heath lies approximately 14.8 miles from Stoke-on-Trent and 121.6 miles from London, forming part of the wider West Midlands region. The Heath is characterised by its semi-detached housing and proximity to nearby places such as The Wharf and Mount Pleasant. The Heath has a population of around 5598 residents.

## The Heath and Staffordshire: AdBlue drains across the area

AdBlue call-outs around The Heath are passed to teams that serve the towns around it — The Wharf, Mount Pleasant as well as Uttoxeter — and most of Staffordshire beyond, across ST postcodes.

Near a border, or anywhere awkward to pin down? Checking beats guessing, so ring.

No moving is needed. In The Heath, a residential suburb, a van that comes to you fits: the vehicle is drained where it stands, whether on a driveway, a side street, a car park or a forecourt.

## What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out around The Heath?

Every job is different, so not one single price is fair.

Whether the motor has been running, and for how long, comes first in what shifts the price. How much AdBlue was put in comes next, and then the position of the car, because an open driveway is easier for a van to reach safely than a tight space behind Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses.

With that reason, every enquiry from The Heath opens with the identical trio — which fluid went in, how much, if the engine ran — ahead of a figure.

Once they are known, a range turns into one firm figure.

Before anyone heads out, you are told the price on the phone. Then you pay on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing in advance.

Misfuelling cover is part of many insurance policies, so it pays to look at yours before the van gets there.

## The Heath: still alongside the car?

In that case, touch nothing — that's the most helpful step available.

Keys out; motor and ignition off.

Say it's AdBlue, about what quantity, and whether the engine ran, on 0333 366 0103. After that Petrol in Diesel handles it, in The Heath or anywhere within Staffordshire.
