# The Hyde: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the engine and your ignition off and phone 0333 366 0103.

Caught before your motor runs, it's usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in The Hyde.

The remainder of this page explains why it occurs and how to make sure it does not — handy if you're reading before it has happened.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel motor

Plenty of newer diesels on the roads round The Hyde and Kingsbury carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your motor.

Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into the exhaust gas and cleans it.

Each tank has its own filler.

Plenty of vehicles have a single flap for both, while some move the AdBlue filler to the boot or under the bonnet.

Topping up your diesel side at the petrol pump goes on constantly.

Rarely topped up, AdBlue normally comes out of a bottle, tipped by someone who has to stop and think which cap to use.

Mistakes happen in that gap between the two.

## How does AdBlue in the diesel tank take place in The Hyde?

Rarely is it carelessness: normally three things coincide.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a message from the car, and letting it run out means limp mode — so a rushed top-up, perhaps before work off Rookery Close, perhaps at The Moon Under Water on the way home after work.

Unfamiliar vehicles come next, as well. Rentals, new cars and company cars put their fillers differently, and habit goes for the cap used on the old one.

A spouted bottle meets no obstacle at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. And so the pour, after begun, keeps on.

It takes seconds, be it in Colindale or bang in the centre of The Hyde.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

Before you pour anything, whether on a drive in The Burroughs or a forecourt around The Hyde, check these. They take a few seconds.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap usually isn't. Read it instead of going by where it sits.

- Plenty of cars give AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.

- Open the filler flap and check for a label — many vehicles show which goes in each inlet just there.

- The handbook. If the filler isn't by the diesel cap, it's in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Hendon.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

The day the light comes on, wherever in Greater London, follow this routine.

- Not in a rush on the side of Deerfield Close, not on a slope, not with your engine running: park then switch off first.

- Daft as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap does the trick — once you've located the filler and read the cap.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave it on.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Only then, start the vehicle: close the cap, check again, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you've already poured into your diesel side.

Skip stage five altogether.

## Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank around The Hyde?

Do not start the engine: that's where the short order of things begins.

Do not switch your ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Do not top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is pulled from.

Ask the attendants to help push the vehicle away from the pump if you are on a forecourt — the Texaco, the Esso or anywhere else.

Your own driveway in The Hyde is where it should stay.

When your engine has run already, stop safely and switch the vehicle off.

The next junction means where to leave when you are on the M1, under a mile from The Hyde.

Roughly how far did it go? Hopping across The Hyde is smaller work than a trip of under 10 miles towards Westminster, and so tell us.

## When we arrive around The Hyde, what occurs?

We come to the vehicle wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside Colindale Primary School, close to St Matthias Colindale or on your own driveway.

The answers decide this work and the quote, and so our technicians ask what went in, roughly how much, and if it has run.

No one heads out before you have had the price by phone.

Draining that tank comes next, then a thorough flush of the system.

Not like petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and eats at certain fuel-system metals, and none of that washes away by itself. That is why it matters more.

Your filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the car is tested.

The engine is started next and tested to be sure it runs smoothly, all before we head off.

Unstarted cars mostly need a half-hour job after arrival. The equipment is fine on a live filling station, and quiet enough for a driveway after dark.

No money upfront; you settle up on the day. At the end, the VAT invoice and a report from the engineer are handed to you for your insurer.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours while we are on the way.

## AdBlue drains in The Hyde and across Greater London

As a residential suburb, The Hyde shares its vans surrounding places — West Hendon, Hendon — right through NW postcodes and the surrounding area around them.

Quickest of all: quote a NW9 6 postcode to our van.

Shifting the car isn't necessary.

Our technicians drain it where it is — a side street close to The Hyde United Reformed Church, a lay-by on the way to Rushgrove Park, a driveway.

Ring and ask instead of guessing if you are near a boundary, or somewhere hard to describe, like the back of Hurricane Room Colindale.

## The Hyde drivers: the short version

Before you tip, read the cap.

If AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank all the same, leave the vehicle off then ring 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel clears it where it waits, anywhere around Greater London.
