# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in The Knapp: Why It Occurs

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the motor and the ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103.

Caught before the engine runs, it's usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is in The Knapp.

The rest of this page covers why it takes place and how to ensure it doesn't — useful if you are reading before it has happened.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel motor need its own filler?

No single fluid but two: that's how plenty of modern diesels around The Knapp and Bromyard Downs run, with diesel feeding your motor.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

There is a filler on each tank.

On a lot of motors the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

Diesel goes in at every forecourt visit, again and again.

A driver who has to stop and think where it goes normally tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less often.

It is in that gap that the slip lives.

## How AdBlue in your diesel tank occurs in The Knapp

It's seldom carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and if it runs out altogether, your vehicle drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off York Road before work, or in the car park at Rose and Lion on the way home.

Unfamiliar cars come second, too. Rentals, new motors and company cars put their fillers in new places, and habit goes for the cap it used on the old one.

A spout-topped bottle meets no obstacle at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. So the pour, after begun, carries on.

West Hill or the heart of The Knapp: it is the same few seconds in both.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Before you tip anything, whether on a driveway in Munderfield Row or a forecourt around The Knapp, check these. They take a few seconds.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap normally is not. Read it rather than going by where it sits.

- On plenty of cars, size tells: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- A label inside your fuel flap frequently shows which fuel goes where, on many motors. Check for it.

- The handbook. If the filler is not by the diesel cap, it is in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- The previous driver knows. Check as you pick up a hire car or company car — from Malvern Link's car park, say — not when the warning comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

For the day the warning appears — anywhere it is in Herefordshire — a simple routine to follow.

- Pull in somewhere level, motor off, with time in hand — never hurried on the side of Clover Road.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it does the trick.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave the vehicle on.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check a second time. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start your car.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you've already poured into the diesel side.

Leave out step five entirely.

## Put AdBlue in your diesel tank around The Knapp already?

Don't start your engine: that's where the short order of things starts.

The fuel pump starts on many diesels the moment the ignition is switched on — and so keep it off.

AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is sucked from — so don't top up with diesel to thin it.

The attendants at Texaco, Maple Leaf or any forecourt will normally help to push the vehicle away if you ask.

If you're on your own drive around The Knapp, leave it where it is.

When your motor has been run already, pull over somewhere safe then switch the car off.

On the M5, under 15 miles from The Knapp, that means the next junction.

A short hop across The Knapp is a smaller job than a run towards Worcester, under 15 miles away, so tell us about how far it went.

## When our technicians turn up in The Knapp, what happens?

We come to the vehicle wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside St Peter's Primary School, near The Bromyard Centre or on your own driveway.

Those answers settle this work and the price, and so we ask what got in, about how much, and if it's run.

You get that quote on the phone, before anybody sets off.

Emptying the tank comes next, then a full flush of the fuel system.

With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own.

A test comes last: before that, fresh diesel is added, and the fuel filter is flushed or changed if necessary.

The engine is started next and checked to be sure it runs properly, all before we go.

Unstarted cars mostly need a half-hour job from the moment we arrive. The equipment is safe on a live filling station, and quiet enough for a residential street late at night.

Payment happens on the day, not upfront, and you receive the paperwork your insurer wants: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

While we travel, take a look at your insurance documents; plenty include cover for misfuelling.

Assuming doesn't help at the back of Bromyard Cricket Club, on a boundary, or anywhere hard to describe; phone and check.
