# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in The Lakes: How It Happens and How to Prevent It

Leave your motor and ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103 now — reading can wait if AdBlue is already in your diesel tank.

In The Lakes, catching it before the engine runs usually leaves a drain and a thorough flush on the spot.

If you're reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it doesn't.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle, and its separate tank

Many modern diesels on the roads about The Lakes and Bewdley carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your motor.

Your exhaust, not your motor, is where AdBlue goes: sprayed into the fumes to clean them, from a separate tank.

There's a filler for each tank.

On a lot of vehicles the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

Filling the diesel side at the pump happens constantly.

A driver who has to stop and think where it goes usually tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less commonly.

The mistake grows in the gap between the two.

## How AdBlue in the diesel tank takes place in The Lakes

It is hardly ever carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

Haste comes from the warning. The vehicle tells you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank puts the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up happens quickly, before work on a driveway off Yew Tree Lane, or heading home in the car park at The Hop Pole Inn.

Then your car is strange. A hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and your hand hits for the cap it would have used on the old one.

No part halts the pour after it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

It's a few seconds, be it in Bark Hill or right in the centre of The Lakes.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Before you pour anything, whether on a drive in Dowles or a forecourt around The Lakes, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- Read the cap instead of going by where it sits: AdBlue caps are frequently blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel ones normally are not.

- Many cars give AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.

- Look inside the fuel flap: many cars carry a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- Can't find it next to the diesel filler? Then check beneath the bonnet or in your boot — the handbook will say which.

- Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside Kidderminster.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever in Worcestershire that is.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with your engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Lakes Court.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it works.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave the vehicle on.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Only then, start the vehicle: close the cap, check once more, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you have already poured into your diesel side.

Do not go on to stage five.

## Put AdBlue in the diesel tank around The Lakes already?

The short order of things, beginning with no starting your motor.

The fuel pump runs on plenty of diesels as soon as the ignition is switched on — so leave it off.

Thinning it with more diesel won't work, because AdBlue sinks to the base rather than blending — and that is where the fuel is sucked from.

At a forecourt — Texaco, Esso or any other — the staff will usually help push the vehicle clear, if you ask.

At home in The Lakes? Then the car stays put.

Where your engine has run by now, pull over safely then switch the car off.

The next exit is where to come off if you're on the M5, under 15 miles from The Lakes.

Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Worcester, under 15 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across The Lakes.

## The Lakes: what occurs when our engineers turn up

Outside St Anne's CofE VC Primary School, near Bewdley Library and Health Centre or on your own drive: wherever the car has stopped, our engineers come to it.

The replies decide this work and our price, so we ask what got in, about how much, and if it's run.

Nobody heads out until you've heard our quote over the phone.

Next: a drain, then a full flush of the entire system.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and eats at some fuel-system metals, and none of it clears away by itself. Hence it counts more.

Your filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

Then our technicians fire it up and make sure it runs smoothly before leaving.

If your engine has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Nothing in advance; you settle up on the day. Afterwards, the VAT invoice and the report from the engineer are handed to you for the insurer.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours while we are on the way.

The van gets to you fastest with a postcode starting DY12 2.

The car doesn't need to move.

A drive, a lay-by on the way to Bewdley riverside, a side street close to Tickenhill Palace: we drain the car where it sits.

Guessing won't help at the back of Riverside Elim Church, close to a boundary, or anywhere hard to pin down; ring and ask.

## In short, for The Lakes motorists

Before you tip, read the cap.

AdBlue in the diesel tank after all? Keep the car switched off and ring 0333 366 0103; Petrol in Diesel empties it where it stands, throughout Worcestershire.
