# The Leys: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? In that case put this page aside for now, leave the ignition and motor off, and ring 0333 366 0103.

Caught before the motor runs, it is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around The Leys.

If you're reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it occurs and how to make sure it does not.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel motor need its own filler?

Diesel feeds the engine — yet plenty of current diesels driven about The Leys and Rough Hay hold another fluid too.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Each tank has one filler of its own.

Other cars keep the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; plenty of others place both together behind one flap.

Topping up the diesel side at the pump happens all the time.

Someone who has to stop and work out where it goes normally tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less often.

That gap is where the slip lives.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank in The Leys: how it happens

It's rarely carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the vehicle tells you, and if it runs out completely, the vehicle goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off St. Lawrence Way before work, or in the car park at The Cottage Spring on the way home.

New-to-you cars come next, too. Hire cars, new vehicles and company cars place their fillers in new places, and the hand reaches for the cap used on the old one.

No part halts the pour after it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

It takes seconds, whether out in Darlaston or bang in the centre of The Leys.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

Whether a The Leys forecourt or a drive out in Fallings Heath, spend a few seconds on these before any is poured in.

- Blue and marking: an AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually does not. Trust the cap, not where it sits.

- Look at the size: the smaller filler neck is, on many vehicles, the AdBlue one.

- A label inside your fuel flap often shows which fuel goes where, on many vehicles. Check for it.

- The handbook. If your filler isn't by the diesel cap, it's in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- The person who drove the car last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park at Darlaston, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

The day the light comes on, wherever across West Midlands, use this routine.

- Turn off after you park — flat ground, engine off, and not rushed by Bilston Street on the verge.

- Find the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and speak the name "AdBlue" aloud while unscrewing it. It seems silly. It works.

- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Gently does it, through the bottle's own spout, till it's full or the bottle runs out.

- Only then, start your car: close the cap, check again, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Step five stays off limits.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, around The Leys?

Short list, then. Top of that: your motor stays unstarted.

Do not switch your ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Do not top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where the fuel is sucked from.

On a forecourt — Texaco, another forecourt nearby or another — the attendants will usually help push your car clear, when you ask.

Your own driveway in The Leys is the place it stays.

Already started? Stop when it's safe, then turn off.

On the M6, under 3 miles from The Leys, that means the next exit.

A short hop across The Leys is a smaller job than a run towards Wolverhampton, under 5 miles away, and so tell us roughly how far it went.

## What takes place when our engineers get there in The Leys

Outside Old Church Church of England C Primary School, near The Salvation Army - Darlaston or on your own drive: wherever the vehicle has stopped, our technicians come to it.

Those answers determine this work and our quote, so our engineers ask what got in, roughly how much, and if it's run.

You hear that quote by phone, before anyone heads out.

The system is then flushed thoroughly, once your tank is drained.

Not like petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and attacks some fuel-system metals, and none of it washes away by itself. That is why it matters more.

After the fuel filter is cleaned — or replaced, if required — fresh diesel goes in, and finally your vehicle gets tested.

We do not go until it has been started and is running smoothly.

With pumps safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs in which the engine has not run need about half an hour after our technicians are there.

The insurer usually wants the engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and both are yours once the job is done. Payment is on the day, with no money upfront.

Before we get there, take a look at your insurance documents; many carry cover for misfuelling.

A postcode starting WS10 8 gets our van to you fastest.

No need to shift your car.

The drain takes place right there, whether a drive, a street by St Lawrence, or a lay-by towards Owen Memorial Garden.

Guessing doesn't help behind Owen Memorial Garden, close to a boundary, or anywhere hard to pin down; phone and check.

## For The Leys motorists, the short version

Always, the cap; then, the tip.

Petrol in Diesel drains it where it stands, anywhere across West Midlands, if AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank anyway — and so leave the car off and phone 0333 366 0103.
