# Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in The Quarry

Engine off, ignition off: that is how you begin if AdBlue has got into the diesel tank.

Urea dissolved in water is what AdBlue is.

The trouble starts once it's pulled through your pump — it won't ignite, and it won't combine with diesel.

If the motor has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally drained and thoroughly flushed where the car stands in The Quarry.

First, ring us on 0333 366 0103.

## The Quarry, AdBlue in your diesel tank: what to do at once

Do these:

- Pull the keys out, and so nobody switches the ignition on.

- If you're at all close to moving traffic, put the hazard lights on.

- Which fluid, and roughly how much quantity? Hang on to the bottle or the receipt, and we will see.

- Our van finds you quickest with a postcode starting GL11 6, or just the name of a street nearby, and so phone from the car.

Do not do these:

- Moving your car just a short way is no reason to fire up your engine.

- The ignition stays off: on many diesels, switching it on is enough to run the fuel pump.

- AdBlue does not mix in diesel — it separates out — so adding extra fuel will not weaken it.

- Leave the car where it is instead of driving it anywhere, even a short stretch along Orchard Leaze.

- Emptying that tank on your own by the road isn't one to try.

Get the attendants to help you move your vehicle away from the pumps if you are on a forecourt in The Quarry, whether it's the Texaco or elsewhere.

On your own driveway, do not touch it at all.

## What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

Made for your exhaust, AdBlue has no place in the motor.

It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into the exhaust gas to fresh it.

Nothing in it is meant to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is made to handle it.

Fuel blends; AdBlue, after poured in, won't. The behaviour is not at all like diesel's.

It's heavier than diesel, so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of the tank, which is where the pickup pulls fuel from.

When your system runs, the AdBlue is top of the list to be pulled through. Before then it waits underneath your diesel, and that is why a vehicle topped up in Stinchcombe last night and not switched on remains the simple case, provided no one touches your key.

From there it causes two kinds of damage.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it is corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, and so it keeps labouring on the components it reaches for as long as it stays there.

Lines carrying AdBlue mean harm overnight for a car sitting around The Quarry. Only in your tank, it stays the same.

Diesel lubricates the injection pump and each injector as it passes; water gives no lubrication, and that is a second form of damage.

## Why is AdBlue in a diesel regularly the bigger issue?

Put petrol in a diesel at the Shell and you have a problem of thin fuel.

No damage is done while it sits unused, blended into your diesel — only once the engine runs on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is an issue of the wrong substance altogether.

It can't simply be run through, because it doesn't burn.

Crystals and corrosion stay after the next tankful, and AdBlue separates back out of your diesel, and so watering it won't help. That is why the flush matters so much, and trying your engine "to see" does more harm here than nearly any other slip — in Sandpits or the centre of The Quarry alike.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

Emptying a tank is the easiest job on any fuel system, and with no start-up, the AdBlue stays in there — wherever across Gloucestershire the vehicle has stopped.

## How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank in The Quarry

Plenty of vehicles place the AdBlue filler alongside the diesel one, now and then behind a single flap, and in dim light the two may appear the same. No one intends it.

A bottle picked up when driving home and poured in outside the house, instead of at the forecourt, is the typical story.

A few familiar ways cover most cases.

The refill is rushed outside Cam Woodfield Infant School, because your dash lit up with a warning while the children were taken in.

A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Quarry Gardens.

Or the car is topped up in the car park at Berkeley Arms, in poor light, by somebody who has never opened that flap before.

The least known cars see it the most — rentals, brand-new ones, company cars, and the other motor of a home with one of each fuels.

Wherever around Gloucestershire, The Quarry included, the mistake does not change, and neither does the first step: leave it switched off.

## Already started your engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank around The Quarry?

Then the AdBlue has left the tank.

With any running time, it travels to the injection pump and every injector, having passed through the filter and pipework.

Expect lumpy running, exhaust smoke, falling power, lights on your dash, or a cut-out — coming back from Dursley Rugby Football Club, perhaps, or midway across The Quarry.

Once safe, stop and switch everything off — with no turning it on again to test.

Each start pulls more of it through.

On the M5, under a mile from The Quarry, the first junction is where to exit, and anywhere safe is where to park — not carrying on.

A quick hop across The Quarry to the car park by Quarry Chapel is one thing; heading for Gloucester, under 15 miles away, is something else, because each mile pushes the AdBlue deeper in. So mileage matters.

Let us know about how far it had come.

Wherever your car came to a halt is where all of it gets done, even with more to flush once the motor has been started.

Spotted quickly, it very seldom leaves permanent damage.

## The Quarry: how AdBlue is drained from a diesel

A road beside Leaf & Ground - Meeting Room, a drive, a layby or a filling station: wherever the vehicle has stopped in The Quarry, our engineers come to it.

Which fluid went in, roughly the quantity, plus if the motor has turned over: our engineers ask before all else, because those decide the work.

On the spot, your tank is then drained, and all of the polluted diesel and the urea leave at once.

What remains from AdBlue won't wash out unaided, so the fuel system gets a careful flush, which matters far more here than with petrol.

The fuel filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

If the motor has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once our engineers are there.

The equipment is explosion-proof, and so a live filling station is no issue, and it is quiet enough for a residential street after dark.

The final step is to prime the system on fresh diesel.

You set off as soon as our technicians have started it, and it makes no difference whether the car is on a drive around The Quarry or in a bay outside Cam & Dursley.

Our technicians make sure it runs smoothly on new diesel before we go.

No garage is needed at any point, with the whole job done then and there.

Insurers ask for a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and both come at the end.

## The Quarry: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

There is no fair single quote, since the jobs are not the same.

The price shifts first with how long, if at all, the motor has been running, and next with the quantity of AdBlue that got in. After that it depends on where your car is and whether our van can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight space behind Stinchcombe Village Hall.

Ahead of any figure, not after, each call from The Quarry opens with three questions: the fuel, the amount, and whether it ran.

Those replies narrow the range right down to one number.

Priced on the call before the van sets out, it is paid for that day — card or phone, no deposit.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours while we're on the way.

## Next to the vehicle in The Quarry, still?
