# How It Occurs and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in The Rise

Leave the engine and ignition off and call 0333 366 0103 first — the rest can wait if AdBlue is already in the diesel tank.

A drain and a thorough flush, done right where your car stands in The Rise, is usually all it needs if found before your engine runs.

Nothing happened yet? Further down, the rest of the page covers the why it happens and the ways to prevent it for good.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel motor need its own filler?

Plenty of newer diesels in Tittenhurst, as well as The Rise, run on two fluids; your motor takes only the diesel.

AdBlue's own tank keeps it, and from there it is sent to your exhaust, and there a spray cleans the fumes.

Different tanks, different fillers.

Some vehicles keep the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; a lot of others place both together under one flap.

At the petrol pump, the diesel side gets filled constantly.

Seldom filled, AdBlue normally goes in from a bottle, tipped by someone who must stop and think which cap it needs.

Mistakes happen in that gap between the two.

## How AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place around The Rise

Carelessness seldom causes it. Instead is three things lining up together.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and if it runs out completely, the car goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Park Drive before work, or in the car park at The Nags Head on the way home.

The old car's filler is where the hand reaches — yet a rental car, a new car or a company car keeps the fillers elsewhere. That's the second thing: a new motor.

Nothing halts the pour after it has started, since a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

It's seconds, whether in Sunningdale or right in the heart of The Rise.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

Whether a The Rise forecourt or a driveway over in Shrubs Hill, take a couple of seconds over these before any goes in.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap normally isn't. Read it rather than going by position.

- Check the size: the smaller filler neck is, on many cars, the AdBlue one.

- Open the flap and look for a label — many cars mark what goes in which inlet right there.

- The handbook shows which it is if the filler is not next to your diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- The previous driver knows. Check when you pick up a hire car or company car — at Sunningdale's car park, say — not when the warning appears.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever in Berkshire that is.

- Not in a rush on the side of Beech Hill Road, not on a slope, not with the motor running: park then switch off properly.

- Daft as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" aloud as you unscrew the cap does the trick — once you have found the filler and read it.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave the vehicle on.

- Slowly does it, through the bottle's own spout, until it is full or the bottle runs out.

- Before you start the vehicle, close the cap and look a second time that your diesel cap was never opened off.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Do not go on to stage five.

## Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank in The Rise?

The short order of things, beginning with not starting your engine.

Keep the ignition off as well, because on many diesels switching it on by itself runs your fuel pump.

Filling up with diesel will not dilute it: rather than mixing, AdBlue sinks to the bottom of the tank, just where the fuel is taken from.

The staff at Esso, Shell or another forecourt will normally help to push your car away if you ask.

At home in The Rise? Then the car stays where it is.

If your engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

The next junction is where to come off if you're on the M3, under 3 miles from The Rise.

Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Westminster, under 25 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across The Rise.

## The Rise: what takes place when we get there

Our van reaches your car anywhere it has come to rest — your own drive, near Sunningdale Library, or by Holy Trinity CofE Primary School, Sunningdale.

Both the work and our quote depend on three answers — what liquid, what quantity, and if it has run — so we ask.

During the call itself, you hear the price — before dispatch.

Emptying the tank comes next, then a thorough flush of your system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why that counts more with AdBlue than with petrol.

A test comes at the end: before that, fresh diesel is added, and the fuel filter is flushed or replaced as needed.

The motor is started next and checked to confirm it runs smoothly, all before we head off.

Most jobs are done in about half an hour once our technicians arrive, as long as your engine has not run — and the pumps we use are safe on a live forecourt and quiet after dark beside a house.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours while we are on the way.
