# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in The Straits? Don't Start It

AdBlue in your diesel tank? Then keep your motor off — and the ignition too.

AdBlue is urea mixed in water.

Being water-based, it will not burn and won't blend with diesel; damage only starts when the pump begins pulling it.

Caught before your engine has been run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is in The Straits.

Ring 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank in The Straits: the first few minutes

Do these:

- Keys out — then no one can power anything on.

- Hazards on, if moving traffic is at all near.

- Keep the receipt or the empty bottle, and so you can tell us what went in and roughly how much.

- Give us a postcode starting PR25 1, or whichever street lies closest, and the van reaches you straight — so call wherever you are.

Never:

- Do not start your engine, even for a moment to shift the vehicle.

- The ignition stays off: on lots of diesels, turning it on is enough to start your fuel pump.

- No more fuel added. The AdBlue won't blend, and so it's wasted.

- Even a short stretch up Fairhaven Road is too far to drive the vehicle.

- Don't try to drain the vehicle yourself at the roadside.

Ask the people behind the counter to help you move the car away from the pumps if you are on a forecourt in The Straits, whether it's the Tesco or somewhere else.

On your own driveway, do not touch it at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

Not the motor but the exhaust is where AdBlue belongs.

Its own tank holds it, and from there it's sprayed into your exhaust, where it cleans the fumes.

A fuel pump isn't designed to cope with it, and AdBlue was never intended to go through one.

Inside a diesel tank it behaves really differently from fuel. It doesn't mix in.

It's heavier than diesel, so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of your tank, which is where the pickup draws fuel from.

A car filled on a driveway in Lower House overnight and left unstarted counts as the simple one. Nothing has pulled the AdBlue up yet — though once your motor turns, that's what is pulled first, straight from the bottom of your tank.

After it is pulled in, the harm comes in two forms.

It attacks certain metals found in fuel systems, attacking any part it touches until it is removed completely. And when the water goes, the urea turns into crystals that block filters and settle in tiny passages.

A vehicle left sitting in The Straits with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue only in its tank is not.

And there is the water: it brings no lubrication to the parts that rely on it most — the injection pump and every injector.

## Why AdBlue in a diesel is frequently more serious than petrol

Put petrol in a diesel at the Morrisons and you have a fault of thin fuel.

No damage comes as long as it stays put, blended into your diesel — only once the engine works on it.

The trouble with AdBlue in a diesel is a completely wrong liquid.

It does not burn, and so it can't just be run through.

Nor can it be thinned, because it separates again — and the following tankful will not clear away crystals or corrosion. So the flush counts more here, and turning the key "to see", in the centre of The Straits or out in Wade Hall, costs more than nearly any other error.

As with petrol, there is good news.

Not run? Then the AdBlue sits just inside that tank, the simplest bit of the whole system to empty, wherever your car has stopped in Lancashire.

## How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank around The Straits?

Many cars place the AdBlue cap beside the diesel cap, occasionally behind one flap, and in dim light the two may appear identical. No one intends it.

A container picked up when heading home and poured in outside the house, instead of at the forecourt, is the usual story.

A couple of familiar ways account for the majority of them.

Rushing, outside Northbrook Primary Academy, after a warning lamp came on during the school run, someone refills the car.

In the evening, a bottle goes in on a drive near Grange Road.

Else, after dark by The Broadfield Arms, your vehicle gets topped up by a driver using that flap the first time.

It occurs most in the vehicles people know least: a hire car, a new car, a company car, or the second vehicle of a household with one diesel and one petrol.

An identical mistake, same first step — leave it switched off — wherever you happen to be in The Straits or the remainder of Lancashire.

## The Straits: started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

In that case, the AdBlue is no longer in that tank.

The filter and lines have had it pulled through, and any running takes it on to the high-pressure pump and each injector.

Watch for lumpy running, exhaust smoke, lost power, lights on the dash, or a stall — coming back from Worden Sports College Recreation Ground, say, or part way across The Straits.

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and don't restart it to check.

Each start pulls more of it through.

On the M6, under 3 miles from The Straits, the next junction is where to exit, and anywhere sensible is where to stop — not driving on.

How far it went matters. A couple of hundred yards across The Straits to the car park by St John's Parish Church is a very different job from a run towards Preston, under 5 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the fuel system with every mile.

Tell us roughly how far it had come.

Once your engine has been run, the flush takes in more, and all of it is done where your car has ended up.

Noticed quickly, it very seldom leaves permanent damage.

## The Straits: how AdBlue is drained from a diesel

Anywhere it has come to rest in The Straits — a filling station, a lay-by, a drive, a street beside Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses — our van comes to your vehicle.

The work rests on three answers, and our engineers ask for first — what got in, the quantity, and whether the engine has turned over.

Next, emptying that tank on the spot takes out the polluted diesel along with the AdBlue together.

A careful flush matters far more after AdBlue than with petrol, because what remains will not wash out on its own.

After that, the fuel filter: cleaned, or replaced if it must be. Then fresh diesel, then a test of your car.

If your motor has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once our engineers are there.

The equipment is explosion-proof, so a busy filling station is no fault, and it is quiet enough for a residential street late at night.

Bleeding the system with new diesel comes at the end.

You head off as soon as we have fired it up, and it makes no difference whether the vehicle is on a driveway around The Straits or in a bay at Leyland.

The check before our engineers leave is that it runs properly on fresh diesel.

The entire job is done where the car is, so it never needs to be taken to a garage.

Your insurer will want an engineer's report and the VAT invoice — both yours once this job is done.

## AdBlue drains across The Straits and Lancashire

Throughout the PR postcode area, the teams answering AdBlue call-outs around The Straits serve much of Lancashire too, Earnshaw Bridge, Broadfield and Seven Stars among them.

Phone and ask rather than guess when you are by a county line, or somewhere awkward to pin down.

Anywhere your car sits — your drive at home, a side street, a car park, a forecourt — we drain it on the spot, and there's no need to bring it to us; that suits The Straits, a residential suburb, well.

## What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out in The Straits?

Each job differs, so no fixed price would be fair.

The cost moves first with how long, if at all, the motor has been running, and next with the amount of AdBlue that got in. After that it rests on where the vehicle is and whether a van can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight space behind Leyland Baptist Church.

That's why every call from The Straits starts with the same three queries, asked before giving a figure, not after: what went in, how much, and if it's run.

The answers turn a range into a straight quote.

Quoted on the call before the van sets out, the job is paid for that day — card or phone, no deposit.

Check your policy while we are on the way: plenty carry misfuelling cover.

## Beside the vehicle in The Straits, still?

Then the most helpful thing you can do is nothing to the car.

Motor off, keys out, ignition off.

Call 0333 366 0103: AdBlue, the amount, and if the engine ran are all we need. Petrol in Diesel takes over the remainder across Lancashire, The Straits too.
