# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in The Walshes: Why It Happens and How to Prevent It

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? In that case put this page down a moment, leave the ignition and engine off, and phone 0333 366 0103.

Normally, if your motor hasn't turned, it's drained and thoroughly purged where the vehicle is around The Walshes.

If you are reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it does not.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel vehicle need its own filler?

No single liquid but two: that's what plenty of newer diesels around The Walshes and Stourport-on-Severn run, with diesel for your engine.

Your exhaust, not your engine, is where AdBlue goes: sprayed into the fumes to fresh it, from its own tank.

Different tanks, separate fillers.

Under one flap, next to each other: that is the layout on many cars. On others, AdBlue's filler is under the bonnet or in your boot instead.

The diesel side is filled at the petrol pump all the time.

Far less often, the AdBlue side is topped up — mostly from a bottle, by a person working out where it goes.

The slip lives in that gap.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank around The Walshes: how it happens

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the vehicle tells you, and if it runs out altogether, the vehicle drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Queen's Road before work, or in the car park outside Astley Cross Inn on the way home.

Then the car is unfamiliar. A hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and your hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old one.

No part stops the tip once it has started, since a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of The Walshes or out in Areley Kings.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

A couple of seconds is all these take — so check them before you pour anything, on a drive in Dunley or a forecourt around The Walshes.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is often blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap normally is not. Read it instead of going by where it sits.

- Many cars give AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Many cars say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook shows which it is when your filler isn't next to the diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- The person who drove it last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park outside Hartlebury, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever around Worcestershire that is.

- Stop somewhere level, motor off, with time in hand — never hurried on the side of Jackson Crescent.

- Find the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and speak the word "AdBlue" aloud while you unscrew it. It sounds daft. It works.

- The diesel cap stays on. When both share a flap, make sure it is shut before lifting the bottle.

- Slowly does it, through the bottle's own spout, till it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check once more. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the car.

Find at stage two or three that it has already gone into your diesel side? So stop just there.

Step five is off limits.

## The Walshes: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Brief list, then. Top of it: the motor stays off.

On many diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so don't switch the car on.

Don't top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where the fuel is pulled from.

The attendants at Tesco, Esso or any forecourt will normally lend a hand to push the vehicle away if asked.

Your own drive around The Walshes is the place it stays.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if the engine has already run.

Come off the M5 — under 10 miles out of The Walshes — at the next exit.

Distance matters — a short hop across The Walshes is a smaller job than driving under 10 miles to Worcester — so tell us about how far it went.

## Our arrival in The Walshes, and what occurs next

Wherever the vehicle has stopped, be it outside St Bartholomew's CofE VC Primary School, beside Walshes Community Cafe and Food Share or at home, the van comes to it.

Those replies determine this work and the quote, and so we ask what was put in, roughly how much, and whether it's run.

The price is given over the phone, ahead of any van leaving.

Emptying the tank comes next, followed by a thorough flush of the fuel system.

Much more than with petrol, it matters here: the crystals build up, certain metals corrode, and nothing washes away unaided, however long it sits.

The filter cleaned or, if it must be, replaced; clean diesel in; and then a check of your car.

After that our engineers fire it up and make sure it runs correctly before we go.

With pumps safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs in which the motor hasn't run take about half an hour once our technicians are there.

Your insurer usually wants the engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and both are yours once the job is done. Payment is on the day, with no money upfront.

It's worth looking at your insurance as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover comes with many policies.

## About The Walshes, for a moment

The Walshes is a suburban area in Worcestershire, situated near the city of Worcester and the surrounding villages of Areley Kings and Astley Cross. The Walshes lies at an elevation of 47 metres, in the gently rolling countryside of the West Midlands region. The Walshes has a population of around 4751 people, predominantly living in semi-detached housing.

## The Walshes and Worcestershire: AdBlue drains across the area

Being a residential suburb, The Walshes has the same vans as nearby places — Astley Cross, Lower Heath — all the way through DY postcodes and the wider area around them.

Quote a postcode that starts DY13 0, and the van arrives fastest.

The vehicle does not need to move.

Anywhere it stands — near Areley Kings Village Hall, on a layby en route to Half-Crown Wood, on a drive — that's where it gets drained.

If you're close to a boundary, or somewhere hard to describe like the back of Areley Kings Methodist Church, ring and ask rather than assuming.

## For The Walshes people, the short version
