# Thicket Mead: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? Then set this page down a moment, leave your ignition and engine off, and call 0333 366 0103.

A drain plus a full flush, done right where your vehicle stands in Thicket Mead, is normally what it takes if found before the engine runs.

Not happened yet? Further down, the page explains the why it occurs and the how to prevent it altogether.

## AdBlue in a diesel car: two tanks, two fillers

Many current diesels on the roads about Thicket Mead and Hayes Park carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your engine.

Its own tank holds it, and from there it is sent to your exhaust, where spraying cleans the fumes.

There is a filler on each tank.

On a lot of cars the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

Topping up your diesel side at the petrol pump happens all the time.

Far less regularly, the AdBlue side is topped up — normally from a bottle, by a person thinking about where it goes.

The mistake grows in that gap between them.

## Thicket Mead: how AdBlue in the diesel tank occurs

It is seldom carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a message from the car, and running out leads to limp mode — hence a hurried top-up, maybe before work off Northmead Road, perhaps at Dolphin Inn on the way home after work.

Then your car is strange. A hire car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't, and your hand gets to for the cap it would have used on the old one.

Lastly, the spout fits: a diesel filler or AdBlue one, it slides in just as easily, and after the tip begins, nothing halts it.

It's seconds, whether out in Monger or right in the heart of Thicket Mead.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

Before you tip anything, whether on a driveway in Belle Vue or a forecourt in Thicket Mead, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap usually isn't. Read it instead of going by position.

- The size. On many vehicles the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- Look inside the fuel flap: plenty of cars have a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If your filler is not by the diesel cap, it is in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Picking up a hire or company car, say at the car park outside Oldfield Park? Ask the person who drove it last before leaving, not once the light comes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

The day the light goes on, anywhere in Somerset, use this routine.

- Pull in on level, motor off, with time to spare — never rushing on the side of Thicket Mead.

- Find the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and say the word "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly. It works.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Stop when your tank is topped up or the bottle is empty; until then, pour gently through its built-in spout.

- Before you start the vehicle, close the cap and check a second time that your diesel cap was never came off.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you've already poured into your diesel side.

Never go on to step five.

## Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Thicket Mead?

Don't start your engine: that's where the short order of things begins.

On many diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so don't switch it on.

Filling up with diesel won't thin it: rather than mixing, AdBlue sinks to the base of your tank, just where the fuel is taken from.

If you're on a forecourt, whether it is the Tesco or the Esso, ask the attendants to help push your car away from the pump.

If you are on your own drive in Thicket Mead, leave it where it stands.

If the motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off.

Thicket Mead sits under 15 miles from the M32; on it, use the next exit.

Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Bath, under 10 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Thicket Mead.

## When our technicians turn up in Thicket Mead, what takes place?

Wherever the car came to rest, whether by Longvernal Primary School, near Midsomer Norton Children's Centre or at home, the van travels to it.

Our engineers ask what went in, roughly how much, and if it's run, since those replies settle the work and our price.

That price is given on the call, ahead of any van leaving.

Draining that tank comes next, then a thorough flush of the fuel system.

With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own.

Filter cleaned or, if it must be, swapped; fresh diesel in; and then a check of the vehicle.

We do not go until it has been started and is running correctly.

Most jobs are done in about half an hour after our engineers arrive, as long as the engine has not run — and the pumps we use are fine on a live forecourt and quiet after dark outside a house.

Your insurer usually wants the engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and you get both at the end. Payment comes on the day, with no money upfront.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.

The car doesn't need to move.

Draining happens on the spot, be it a drive, a road by St John the Baptist, or a lay-by on the way to Underhill Wood.

Guessing won't help behind Welton Baptist Church, on a boundary, or somewhere awkward to describe; phone and ask.
