# Thorpe Marriott: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

AdBlue in your diesel tank? Then keep your engine off — and the ignition too.

Water with urea dissolved in it: that's AdBlue.

Unlike fuel, it neither ignites nor mixes, and nothing happens until the motor sucks it round.

A drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Thorpe Marriott, is usually all AdBlue in a diesel tank takes — if it is caught before your engine has run.

Before anything, phone us on 0333 366 0103.

## Those opening minutes: AdBlue in the diesel tank in Thorpe Marriott

To do:

- Keys out — that way no one can switch anything on.

- Hazards on, if moving traffic is anywhere near.

- The empty bottle or the receipt shows us the fluid and the amount, so do not throw it out.

- Ring right where you are. Quote a NR8 6 postcode or the nearest street sign, and nobody has to search for you.

Not to do:

- Not even for a second, and not to shift the vehicle: the motor remains off.

- Your ignition stays off: on many diesels, switching it on is enough to start the fuel pump.

- Don't top up with diesel to thin it. AdBlue doesn't dilute in diesel; it separates out.

- Even a short way along Pendlesham Rise is too far to drive the vehicle.

- Emptying your tank on your own by the road is not one to try.

Rolling your car off the island is a job for attendants to help with, wherever Thorpe Marriott forecourt you are on, the Shell or any other.

At home, the car stays exactly as it was left.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

The engine is not what AdBlue is made for; the exhaust is.

It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into your exhaust gas to clean it.

Nothing in an injection pump is designed for this fluid — and no part of it was intended to travel through one.

It does not blend. Once it is tipped into a tank of diesel, AdBlue behaves not at all like diesel.

It drops, since it's denser than diesel, and settles low where the intake draws its fuel from.

Easiest of all: a vehicle that had AdBlue in Horsford last night and hasn't turned since. The liquid sits at the foot of that tank, undrawn — though it would be the first thing through if the engine runs, before any diesel at all.

Once it is drawn in, the harm takes two forms.

Crystals and corrosion. As the water dries, it leaves urea that hardens in filter elements and narrow channels; and, since it eats at certain metals, each part it touches suffers for as long as it stays inside.

Where the AdBlue is in the lines, waiting till morning in Thorpe Marriott makes it worse. In the tank alone, time does nothing.

Diesel protects the injection pump and every injector as it passes; water gives none of that, which is a separate form of damage.

## Why is AdBlue in a diesel regularly the bigger problem?

A fault of thinned fuel is what you get after filling a diesel with petrol at the Applegreen.

Mixed through your diesel and left still, it is harmless at that stage; using the engine is the harm.

AdBlue in a diesel is a different matter: not thin fuel, yet no fuel at all.

It cannot just be run through, because it doesn't burn.

Nor can it be watered down, because it separates again — and the following fill will not rinse away crystals or corrosion. So the flush matters for more here, and trying the engine "to see", in the centre of Thorpe Marriott or out in Costessey, does more harm than almost any other slip.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

Anywhere around Norfolk the car has stopped, an unstarted motor means the AdBlue still inside the tank: the easiest part of any fuel system to empty.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Thorpe Marriott: how it ends up there

No one means to do it. The AdBlue filler on many cars rests right next to your diesel filler, at times under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light.

A bottle bought when heading home and poured in at home, instead of at the filling station, is the typical route.

It tends to happen in a couple of familiar ways.

A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up takes place in a hurry outside Drayton Community Infant School.

A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Suters Drive.

Or someone unfamiliar with that flap tops up your vehicle after dark, stopped in the car park by The Otter.

The least familiar cars see it the most — hire cars, new ones, company ones, and the other vehicle of a home with both fuel types.

Wherever in Norfolk, Thorpe Marriott as well, the mistake doesn't change, and neither does the first step: keep it switched off.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank in Thorpe Marriott, and the motor started?

The AdBlue has left the tank, then.

Given any running time, it goes on to the high-pressure pump and every injector, having passed through the fuel filter and lines.

You may see the motor running unevenly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, maybe on the way back from Thorpe Marriott Village Green or halfway across Thorpe Marriott.

Stop when it is safe. Switch off. Keep the car off rather than testing it again.

With each start, more of it is pulled through.

If you were on the M11, over 50 miles from Thorpe Marriott, come off at the next junction and stop somewhere sensible instead of pressing on.

Every mile pushes the AdBlue deeper in. That is why crossing Thorpe Marriott to park beside Trinity Church Centre and a drive of under 10 miles for Norwich are such distinct jobs.

Roughly how far had it come? Tell us.

Once the motor has run, the flush takes in more, and all of it is done where the car has come to a stop.

Caught quickly, it very seldom leaves long-term damage.

## What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve around Thorpe Marriott?

Anywhere it has come to rest around Thorpe Marriott — a forecourt, a layby, a drive, a road by Taverham Village Sign — our van comes to your vehicle.

Three answers decide the work, and so first we ask what was put in, roughly the amount, plus whether the motor has turned over.

The contaminated diesel and the urea leave as one after the tank is emptied, right there.

A full flush matters far more with AdBlue than after petrol, because what remains won't clear out on its own.

Next, the filter: cleaned, or replaced if it has to be. Then clean diesel, and then a check of your vehicle.

Most of these jobs are a half-hour job once our engineers turn up, if your engine hasn't run.

The pumps are explosion-proof, fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Bleeding your system with fresh diesel comes at the end.

You head off as soon as our technicians have started it, and it makes no difference whether the vehicle is on a driveway in Thorpe Marriott or in a bay outside Norwich.

Before we leave, our engineers make sure it is running properly with new diesel in.

The whole job is done where your car is, so it never needs to go to a garage.

At the end, there is the paperwork for your insurer: a VAT invoice and a written report from the engineer.

## What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right in Thorpe Marriott

Each job differs, so not one single price is honest.

The price changes first with how long, if at all, the motor has been running, and next with the amount of AdBlue that was put in. After that it rests on where the car is and whether our van can reach it safely, which is easier on an open driveway than in a tight space behind Taverham Library.

Ahead of a figure, never after, each enquiry from Thorpe Marriott opens with three checks: the fuel, the quantity, plus if it ran.

Once those are known, a range becomes one fixed number.

Before a van sets off, you hear our price by phone. And payment is on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront.

As the van is on the way, check your insurance: many cover misfuelling.
