# Three Bridges: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

AdBlue in your diesel tank? Then leave your motor off — and your ignition too.

Water with urea mixed in it: that's AdBlue.

The harm begins once it's sucked through your lines — it won't burn, and it won't blend with diesel.

Caught before the motor has been run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Three Bridges.

No step comes before calling 0333 366 0103.

## Those opening minutes: AdBlue in your diesel tank around Three Bridges

Things to do:

- Pocket the keys, and that stops someone turning the electrics on.

- Put your hazards on if you are anywhere near moving traffic.

- So you can give us which fluid it was and roughly what quantity, keep the till receipt or the empty bottle.

- Ring us from where you are. A postcode starting RH10 1, or the name of the nearest street, gets the van to you without a search.

Not to do:

- Don't start the engine, even for a moment to move your car.

- Many diesels power their fuel pump the moment the ignition goes on, so leave the vehicle off.

- AdBlue does not mix in diesel — it separates out — so adding more fuel won't weaken it.

- Even a short distance up North Road is too far to drive the vehicle.

- By the road, don't try emptying it on your own.

Get the people behind the counter to help you move your vehicle off the pumps if you're on a forecourt in Three Bridges, whether it's the Tesco or somewhere else.

If you are on your own drive, leave the vehicle precisely where it stands.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

Meant for the exhaust, AdBlue has no business in the motor.

Kept in a separate tank, it is squirted into the exhaust stream to treat the fumes.

Neither side suits the other: urea doesn't belong in a pump, and a pump cannot deal with urea.

Fuel blends; AdBlue, once tipped in, will not. The behaviour is nothing like fuel's.

Denser than diesel, it sinks and pools below it — the same place the intake sucks from.

The first thing the system pulls through, after it runs, is the AdBlue. So a motor that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in County Oak last night, and hasn't been started since, is still the simple case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of your tank, and nothing has pulled it in.

It does two kinds of harm from there.

Crystals and corrosion. As the water dries, it leaves urea that hardens in filter elements and tiny passages; and, because it eats at some metals, each part it reaches suffers for as long as it stays in there.

Lines holding AdBlue spell harm overnight for a vehicle parked in Three Bridges. Just inside that tank, it stays the same.

Water protects nothing. The injection pump and every injector need diesel flowing through them, so the water part damages them by itself.

## Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is commonly worse

Petrol put into a diesel on BP's forecourt makes the fuel thin — that's the whole issue.

Damage just comes from running on it. Mixed into the diesel and left in the tank, it does none.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the liquid itself is plainly the wrong one.

It does not burn, and so it cannot simply be run through.

Deposits and corrosion stay through the following fill, and AdBlue separates again from the diesel, so watering it won't work. That is why the flush counts so much, and trying your engine "to see" costs more with AdBlue than nearly any other mistake — in Furnace Green or the heart of Three Bridges alike.

With AdBlue, the good news is no different from petrol.

Emptying a tank is the simplest job on any fuel system, and without start-up, the AdBlue stays in there — anywhere around West Sussex your car has stopped.

## Three Bridges: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

Many cars put the AdBlue cap beside the diesel cap, occasionally under one flap, and in dim light the two may look the same. Nobody intends it.

Mostly it happens with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the drive, not at the pump.

Mostly, it takes place in one of a couple of familiar ways.

A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up happens in a hurry outside Three Bridges Primary School.

A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Hazelwick Avenue.

One more version: darkness, the car park outside The Snooty Fox, and someone opening that flap for the first time.

It comes up most in a hire car, a new car, a company motor, or the other motor of a family with both fuels — the vehicles drivers know the least.

Anywhere around West Sussex, Three Bridges as well, the slip does not change, and nor does the first response: leave it off.

## Three Bridges: started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Then the AdBlue has left that tank.

It's been pulled through the fuel filter and your lines, and if the engine ran for any time, it has reached the high-pressure pump and the fuel injectors.

Perhaps returning from Northgate Playing Field, or midway across Three Bridges, the motor may go lumpy, smoke, lose pace, flash your dash or cut out.

No starting it again to test: stop once it is safe, then switch it off.

More of it is pulled through with each start.

Leave the M23, under 3 miles from Three Bridges, at the first junction and stop somewhere safe, not driving on.

How far it went matters. A few hundred yards across Three Bridges to the car park by Library is a very different job from a run towards Brighton and Hove, under 25 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the fuel system with every mile.

Roughly how far it had come is worth telling us.

Once the engine has run, the flush covers more, and all of it is done where the vehicle has stopped.

Very rarely does it leave long-term damage if it is noticed soon.

## Three Bridges: how AdBlue is emptied from a diesel

The vehicle remains put, whether that is a road near Crawter’s Molecules, a drive, a layby or a filling station around Three Bridges, and our van travels to it.

Which fluid was put in, roughly the quantity, and if the motor has been run: our technicians ask first, since those shape the job.

Then the tank is cleared where your car stands, and so the tainted fuel and the AdBlue come out together.

Residue from AdBlue will not flush out unaided, so the whole system gets a full flush, which matters much more here than with petrol.

Clean diesel goes in after the fuel filter is flushed — or replaced, when it needs to be — and after that your car is tested.

Not run? Then count on about half an hour on site for most jobs.

The equipment is explosion-proof, so a live filling station is no fault, and it's quiet enough for a residential street after dark.

The last step is to bleed the system on new diesel.

After that our engineers fire it up and you set off, whether from a parking space by the nearest station or a driveway in Three Bridges.

It is tested on new diesel to be sure it runs correctly before our engineers head off.

The entire job is done where your car is, so it never has to go to a workshop.

At the end, you are given the paperwork for the insurer: a VAT invoice plus a written report from the engineer.

Near a border, or anywhere awkward to explain? Checking beats assuming, so phone.

No moving is needed. In Three Bridges, a residential suburb, a mobile service works: your car is drained where it stands, be it on a drive, a side street, a parking area or a forecourt.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Three Bridges: the cost of fixing it

Since each jobs differ, a single price wouldn't be fair.

What moves the cost is, firstly, whether your engine has been running and for how long; then how much AdBlue went in; and then where the car is and whether our van can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight gap behind Propelling Nature.

That is why every call from Three Bridges starts with the same three queries, asked before giving a figure, not after: what went in, how much, and if it has run.

Once they are answered, a range becomes one firm number.

Before anyone heads out, you hear the price on the phone. And you pay on the day, card or by phone, with nothing upfront.

Look at your policy while we're on the way: many carry misfuelling cover.

## In Three Bridges and still next to your car?

Then the most helpful thing you can do is nothing to the car.

Motor off, keys out, ignition off.

Say it's AdBlue, roughly how big an amount, and whether the engine ran, on 0333 366 0103. After that Petrol in Diesel takes over, across Three Bridges or wherever in West Sussex.
