# AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Threemilestone? Keep It Switched Off

AdBlue in the diesel tank? Then leave the motor off — and your ignition too.

Water with urea mixed in it: that's AdBlue.

Unlike fuel, it neither ignites nor mixes, and nothing starts till the motor sucks it round.

If your engine has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally emptied and carefully flushed where your car stands around Threemilestone.

Nothing comes before ringing 0333 366 0103.

## Threemilestone, AdBlue in your diesel tank: what to do right away

To do:

- So nobody can switch the ignition on, pull the keys out.

- Hazards on, if moving traffic is anywhere close.

- The empty bottle or the till receipt tells us the fluid and the amount, so don't bin it away.

- Give us a postcode starting TR3 6, or whichever street lies closest, and the van finds you directly — so ring from wherever you stand.

Things not to do:

- Not even briefly, and not to shift the vehicle: your motor stays off.

- Plenty of diesels power their pump the instant the ignition comes on, so keep it off.

- Do not top up with diesel to dilute it. AdBlue does not mix in diesel; it separates out.

- Even a short way down Chyvelah Road is too far to drive it.

- Beside the road, don't attempt draining it on your own.

The attendants on duty at any Threemilestone forecourt — the Sainsbury's among them — will normally help pushing it clear if you ask.

At your own driveway, don't touch it at all.

## What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

Not the motor but your exhaust is where AdBlue is meant to go.

It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into your exhaust gas to fresh it.

Nothing in an injection pump is designed for this liquid — and none of that was meant to travel through one.

Fuel blends; AdBlue, once poured in, will not. Its behaviour is nothing like fuel's.

The pickup takes fuel from the lowest part of the tank, and that is exactly where AdBlue ends up: being denser than diesel, it sinks.

A car filled on a drive in Hugus yesterday evening and left unstarted is the straightforward case. Nothing has pulled the AdBlue up yet — though once the motor runs, that's what is pulled first, directly from the bottom of that tank.

From there it does two kinds of harm.

Crystals and corrosion. As the water evaporates, it leaves urea that hardens in filters and tiny channels; meanwhile, because it attacks certain metals, each part it touches keeps suffering for as long as it remains in there.

Overnight, a car sitting in Threemilestone with AdBlue in its lines gets worse; if it's just in your tank, it doesn't.

Water lubricates nothing. The high-pressure pump and every injector need diesel running through them, so the water part damages them by itself.

## Why AdBlue in a diesel is frequently more significant than petrol

Put petrol in a diesel at the Esso and you have an issue of thin fuel.

No damage is done while it stays put, mixed into the diesel — only once your engine runs on it.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the fluid as such is simply the wrong one.

Since it doesn't burn, running it through is not an option.

Nor can it be thinned, because it separates again — and the following tankful will not clear away crystals or corrosion. So the flush matters more with AdBlue, and turning the key "to see", in the centre of Threemilestone or out in Kerley Downs, does more harm than nearly any other slip.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

Never started? Then the AdBlue waits just in the tank, the simplest bit of the whole system to empty, wherever the vehicle has stopped across Cornwall.

## How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank in Threemilestone?

It's not on purpose. Many vehicles keep the AdBlue cap beside the diesel one, occasionally under one flap, and muddling them up is easy after dark.

It usually takes place at home, from a bottle grabbed on the journey home, not at the filling station.

Usually, it happens in one of a couple of familiar ways.

Hurrying, outside Threemilestone School, after a warning light flashed on during the school run, a parent tops up the vehicle.

After work, a bottle is tipped in on a driveway near Hugus Road.

Else, after dark by Victoria Inn, the vehicle gets refilled by a driver using that flap for the first time.

The least known cars get it most — hire cars, new cars, fleet cars, and the spare motor in a home with both fuel types.

Keep it switched off: that is the first step to an identical slip, anywhere around Threemilestone or the rest of Cornwall you happen to be.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank in Threemilestone, and your engine started?

The AdBlue has left the tank, then.

It's been drawn through the filter and the fuel lines, and if the engine ran for any time, it has reached the high-pressure pump and the injectors.

You may notice the engine running unevenly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, perhaps on the way back from Threemilestone Playing Fields or halfway across Threemilestone.

Stop when it is safe. Switch off. Keep it off instead of restarting it to check.

Every start pulls more of it through.

Threemilestone sits over 50 miles from the M5; if you were on it, exit by the first junction and stop somewhere safe rather than driving on.

Each mile pushes the AdBlue deeper into your system. That's why crossing Threemilestone to park near Threemilestone Community Centre and a drive of under 3 miles towards Truro are very distinct jobs.

Let us know roughly how far it had come.

Our engineers do all of the rinsing where the car has stopped, and once the engine has been started there is more of it.

Very rarely does it leave lasting damage if it's spotted early.

## What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve around Threemilestone?

Anywhere it has come to rest around Threemilestone — a forecourt, a lay-by, a drive, a street by Threemilestone Methodist Church — our van travels to the car.

Which fluid went in, about the quantity, plus if the engine has been run: we check first, because those shape the work.

The contaminated diesel and the urea leave as one when your tank is emptied, on the spot.

A full flush counts much more after AdBlue than with petrol, because what remains won't clear away by itself.

Testing your car follows at the end, once fresh diesel is added and your filter is cleaned or, where needed, replaced.

Engine not run? Then count on about half an hour once we are there for most jobs.

Quiet enough to use outside a house at night, and safe on a working forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.

Last, your system is primed with new diesel.

Then our engineers fire it up and you head off, whether from a parking bay at Truro or a drive in Threemilestone.

The test before we leave is that it runs correctly on fresh diesel.

We do it all wherever your car has ended up, and it never has to go to a garage.

Afterwards, you are given paperwork for your insurer: a VAT invoice plus a written report from the engineer.

## AdBlue drains across Threemilestone and Cornwall

The teams that answer AdBlue call-outs around Threemilestone also cover the locations round it, Tomperrow, Gloweth and Treliske among them, and most of Cornwall beyond, across the TR postcode area.

Guessing won't help close to a border or somewhere hard to pin down; phone and check.

A mobile service suits Threemilestone, a rural village: there's no need to take your car to us, because our technicians empty it on the spot, in a drive, a residential street, a parking area or a filling station.

## What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out in Threemilestone?

Every job is different, and so no single quote is honest.

Three things change the cost: whether the motor has run and for how long, how much AdBlue got in, and where the vehicle is. That last one rests on whether a technician can reach it safely, and an open drive is easier than a tight gap behind Truro Sports Hub.

Ahead of a quote, not after, every call from Threemilestone opens with the same three checks: the fuel, the quantity, plus whether it ran.

Those replies narrow the range down to one number.

Before anyone heads out, you hear our quote by phone. Then you pay on the day, card or over the phone, with nothing in advance.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours while we are on the way.

## Threemilestone: still beside the vehicle?

Then, the most helpful thing to do with your vehicle is to not touch it.

Keys out, engine off, ignition off.

Say it's AdBlue, roughly how big an amount, and if it ran, on 0333 366 0103. From there Petrol in Diesel takes over, across Threemilestone or anywhere in Cornwall.
