# Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Throston: Why It Happens

Pause here a minute if your diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, and ring 0333 366 0103.

Normally, if your engine hasn't run, it is drained and thoroughly cleaned where your car is in Throston.

If you are reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it occurs and how to make sure it does not.

## AdBlue in a diesel car, and its separate tank

Diesel feeds your motor — but plenty of modern diesels seen round Throston and Old Town carry a second liquid as well.

The exhaust, not the engine, is where AdBlue ends up: sprayed into the gas to clean them, from a separate tank.

There's a filler for each tank.

Other vehicles keep the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; a lot more place the two together under one flap.

The diesel side is filled at the petrol pump all the time.

The AdBlue side is topped up far less often, usually from a bottle, and normally by a person who has to stop and think where it goes.

It is in that gap that the mistake happens.

## Throston: how AdBlue in your diesel tank occurs

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a warning from your car, and running out leads to limp mode — so a hurried top-up, maybe before work off Durham Street, perhaps outside The Victoria Arms on the way home that evening.

Then your car is strange. A hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't, and your hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the tip once it has started.

It's a few seconds, whether in Croft on Heugh or bang in the centre of Throston.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

A couple of seconds is all the checks take — so check them before you tip anything, on a drive in Hartlepool or a forecourt in Throston.

- Colour and lettering: an AdBlue cap is often blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually does not. Trust the cap, not its position.

- Look at the size: the smaller filler neck is, on many cars, the AdBlue one.

- Lift the flap and check for a label — plenty of motors mark which goes in each filler right there.

- Can't find it next to the diesel filler? In that case look below the bonnet or in the boot — the owner's manual says where.

- The previous driver will know. Check when you collect a hire car or fleet car — from Hartlepool's car park, say — rather than once the light appears.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

Anywhere in Durham the light comes on, here is a routine for that day.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with your engine running, and not in a rush on the side of West View Road.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it does the trick.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave it on.

- Stop once your tank fills or the bottle runs dry; until then, tip gently through its built-in spout.

- Before you start your car, shut the cap and look again that the diesel cap was never came off.

Find at stage two or three that it's already gone into your diesel side? Then stop just there.

Do not go on to step five.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, in Throston?

What follows is a short order of things, starting with no starting the engine.

Keep your ignition off as well, because on plenty of diesels switching it on alone runs your pump.

Filling up with diesel will not dilute it: rather than mixing, AdBlue drops to the bottom of the tank, right where the fuel is taken from.

The staff at Asda, Morrisons or any forecourt will normally lend a hand pushing your car away if you ask.

At home in Throston? Then your car remains put.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if your motor has already run.

Throston lies under 15 miles from the A1(M); on it, take the first junction.

Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Sunderland, under 25 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Throston.

## Our arrival around Throston, and what takes place next

We come to the car wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside St Helen's Primary School, near Headland Sports Hall or on your own drive.

Those answers settle this work and the price, and so our technicians ask what got in, roughly how much, and if it has run.

The price comes over the phone, before any van leaves.

Your system is then purged thoroughly, once the tank is drained.

Much more than with petrol, it matters with AdBlue: the crystals build up, certain metals are attacked, and none of it washes out unaided, no matter how long it is left.

Once the fuel filter is flushed — or replaced, where required — fresh diesel is added, and then the vehicle is tested.

We do not leave until it has been started and is running properly.

Unrun cars mostly mean a half-hour job from arrival. The equipment is safe on a live forecourt, and quiet enough for a driveway late at night.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Wrong-fuel cover is included in many insurance policies — so make use of the wait to check yours.

Give a postcode beginning TS24 0, and our van gets there quickest.

Shifting the car isn't needed.

A drive, a lay-by on the way to Gibb Square, a side street near Hartlepool Borough Hall: our engineers drain the vehicle where it stands.

If you are near a boundary, or somewhere hard to explain like the back of St Mary's Church, ring and ask instead of guessing.
