# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Thrupp? Don't Start It

AdBlue in your diesel tank? Then leave the engine off — and the ignition too.

AdBlue is urea mixed in water.

As it is water-based, it won't burn and never combines with diesel; trouble just starts once the pump begins drawing it.

A drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Thrupp, is usually what AdBlue in a diesel tank needs — if it is caught before your motor has been run.

Phone 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

## What to do straight away, Thrupp: AdBlue in your diesel tank

Things to do:

- Keys out — that way no one can power anything on.

- Hazards on, if moving traffic is anywhere close.

- The empty bottle or the receipt tells us the fluid and the quantity, so do not throw it out.

- Our van finds you quickest with a postcode starting GL5 2, or just the name of a street nearby, so call from the car.

Things not to do:

- Shifting your vehicle even a short way is no reason to fire up your engine.

- Plenty of diesels power their fuel pump the moment the ignition comes on, so leave the car off.

- AdBlue doesn't dilute in diesel — it separates out — so adding extra fuel will not thin it.

- Keep the vehicle where it is instead of driving it anywhere, even a short distance along Claypits Lane.

- Don't try to drain the car yourself by the kerbside.

The attendants on duty at any Thrupp forecourt — the BP included — will usually help rolling it aside if you ask.

At home, your car remains exactly where it was left.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

Meant for your exhaust, AdBlue has no place in your engine.

It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into the exhaust gas to fresh it.

A fuel pump is not made to cope with it, and AdBlue was never intended to travel through one.

Inside a diesel tank it acts really differently from fuel. It does not mix in.

Denser than diesel, it drops and pools underneath it — the very place the intake sucks from.

The first thing the system pulls through, once it runs, is the AdBlue. So a motor that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Far Thrupp last night, and hasn't been started since, is still the simple case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of your tank, and nothing has drawn it in.

From there it does two kinds of damage.

It eats at certain metals used in fuel components, working on any part it touches until it is cleared completely. And when the water evaporates, the urea forms crystals that clog filters and lodge in tiny passages.

Lines carrying AdBlue mean damage overnight for a vehicle parked in Thrupp. Just in that tank, it stays the same.

Diesel lubricates the high-pressure pump and each injector as it passes; water offers no lubrication, which is a second kind of damage.

## Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is regularly worse

An issue of thinned fuel is what you get from filling a diesel with petrol from the Tesco.

Harm only comes from driving on it. Mixed into the diesel and sitting inside your tank, it causes nothing.

AdBlue in a diesel is another matter: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all.

Not burning, it can't just be run through.

Nor can it be watered down, because it separates again — and the following tankful won't rinse away crystals or corrosion. So the flush matters more here, and trying your engine "to see", in the heart of Thrupp or out in Bagpath, does more harm than almost any other error.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

Anywhere around Gloucestershire your car has stopped, an unrun engine means the AdBlue yet in the tank: the easiest bit of a fuel system to clear.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Thrupp: how it ends up there

In dim light, two caps together — the AdBlue cap and the diesel one, occasionally under a single flap — can look the same. No one intends it; many layouts allow it.

It usually occurs at home, from a container bought on the journey home, rather than at the filling station.

Mostly, it occurs in one of a few familiar ways.

Rushing, outside Thrupp School, after a warning lamp flashed on during the school run, someone refills your car.

A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Gunhouse Lane.

Otherwise, in dim light by The Bowbridge Arms, the vehicle is refilled by someone opening that flap for the first time.

The least known vehicles get it the most — hire cars, new cars, fleet cars, and the spare vehicle in a family with both fuel types.

Leave it off: that's the first response to an identical mistake, wherever around Thrupp or the rest of Gloucestershire you are.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank around Thrupp, and the engine started?

If so, the AdBlue is no longer inside the tank.

Your filter and lines have had it pulled along, and some running time carries it on to the injection pump and each injector.

Maybe coming back from Arundel Mill Ponds, or part way across Thrupp, the engine may run lumpy, smoke, lose power, flash your dash or stall.

When safe, pull over then turn it off — without turning it on again to test.

Every start pulls more of it through.

If you were on the M5, under 10 miles from Thrupp, come off at the next junction and stop somewhere safe rather than pressing on.

Mileage counts: every mile pushes the AdBlue deeper in, and so driving for Gloucester, under 10 miles away, gives a far bigger job than crossing Thrupp to the car park by In Transit.

About how far it had come is worth telling us.

Once the engine has been run, the flush includes more, and all of it is done where the vehicle has ended up.

Very seldom does it leave lasting damage when it is spotted soon.

## Thrupp: how AdBlue is drained from a diesel

A road beside Trinity Rooms, a driveway, a layby or a filling station: anywhere your car has stopped around Thrupp, our engineers come to it.

Three replies shape the job, and so first our technicians ask what went in, roughly the amount, plus whether your motor has turned over.

Right there, your tank is then drained, and all of the polluted diesel and the urea come out at once.

The fuel system is rinsed thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what it leaves behind does not rinse out on its own.

Fresh diesel goes in after the filter is cleaned — or replaced, when it needs to be — and after that your car is tested.

Not run? In that case count on roughly half an hour on site for most jobs.

Our pumping gear is explosion-proof, so a busy filling station is no fault, and it's hushed enough for a residential street late at night.

Priming the system with clean diesel comes at the end.

After that our technicians start the engine and you drive off, whether from a parking bay by Stroud or a driveway around Thrupp.

The test before our engineers head off is that it runs correctly on fresh diesel.

Since the job is done in its entirety where the car is, a workshop never comes into it.

Your insurer will want an engineer's report and your VAT invoice — both yours afterwards.

## AdBlue drains across Gloucestershire, Thrupp included

The vans that answer AdBlue calls around Thrupp also cover the places about it, Bowbridge, Butterrow and Mount Pleasant among them, and most of Gloucestershire beyond, across the GL postcode area.

Close to a border, or anywhere tricky to explain? Asking beats guessing, and so ring.

Thrupp is a village, and an on-site drain suits it: whether the vehicle is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, we drain it where it sits, and so it never needs to be shifted to us.

## What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right in Thrupp

Each job is different, and so not one single price would be fair.

The cost changes first with how long, if at all, the engine has been running, and next with the quantity of AdBlue that was put in. After that it depends on where the vehicle is and whether a van can get to it safely, which is easier on an open driveway than in a tight gap behind Holy Trinity.

Ahead of a figure, never after, every enquiry from Thrupp opens with the same three checks: the liquid, the amount, plus whether the engine ran.

Their replies narrow the range right down to a single figure.

Priced by phone before the van sets out, it is settled that day — card or phone, nothing in advance.

Misfuelling cover is part of many insurance policies, so it is worth looking at yours before the van gets there.
