# Tickencote: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

Pause reading a minute when your diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, then ring 0333 366 0103.

Caught before the engine runs, it is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is in Tickencote.

The rest of this page explains why it happens and how to make sure it does not — handy if you are reading ahead of time.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel motor need its own filler?

Plenty of newer diesels on the roads round Tickencote and Tinwell carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the motor.

Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into your exhaust stream to clean it.

Different tanks, different fillers.

Many of vehicles share a single flap for the two, while others put the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet.

Filling the diesel side at the pump happens constantly.

A driver who has to stop and think where it goes normally fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less regularly.

The mistake lives in that gap.

## How does AdBlue in your diesel tank happen around Tickencote?

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and if it runs out completely, the car goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Casterton Road before work, or in the car park at The Crown on the way home.

Next, your hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old vehicle — since a hire car, a new motor or a company car places the fillers somewhere your last one didn't.

Third, the bottle goes in: a diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it goes in just as easily, and once the tip begins, no part halts it.

The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Tickencote or out in Ingthorpe.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Before you pour anything, whether on a drive in Pickworth or a forecourt around Tickencote, check these. They take a few seconds.

- Where it sits can mislead; the cap does not. AdBlue ones are often blue or bear the word "AdBlue" — diesel ones normally do not.

- Look at the size: the smaller neck is, on many vehicles, the AdBlue one.

- Look inside the fuel flap: many vehicles carry a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- In your boot or under the bonnet: that is where your filler sits if it's not by your diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- The previous driver will know. Check as you pick up a hire car or fleet car — at Stamford's car park, perhaps — rather than when the light comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

The day the light comes on, anywhere around Rutland, follow this routine.

- Switch off after you park — level ground, motor off, and not rushed by Casterton Lane at the roadside.

- Find the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and speak the word "AdBlue" aloud while unscrewing it. It seems silly. It does the trick.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave it on.

- Finish once the tank fills or the bottle runs dry; until then, tip slowly through the built-in spout.

- Before starting the vehicle, close the cap and look again that the diesel cap was never opened off.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you've already poured into your diesel side.

Leave out step five altogether.

## Put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Tickencote already?

Short list, then. First: the motor stays off.

The fuel pump starts on plenty of diesels as soon as your ignition goes on — and so leave it off.

Filling up with diesel won't weaken it: instead, AdBlue drops to the bottom of that tank, just where the fuel is drawn from.

At a forecourt — BP, Morrisons or another — the attendants will normally help roll the car clear, when you ask.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own driveway around Tickencote.

Already started? Stop once it is safe, then turn off.

Leave the Great North Road — under 15 miles out of Tickencote — at the next exit.

A short hop across Tickencote is a smaller job than a run towards Peterborough, under 15 miles away, and so tell us roughly how far it went.

## What happens when our engineers arrive around Tickencote

Outside Great Casterton Church of England Primary School, near Parish Church of St. Peter or on your own drive: wherever the vehicle has stopped, our engineers come to it.

Our technicians ask what was put in, about how much, and if it has run, since those replies determine this work and the quote.

Nobody heads out before you've heard our price by phone.

Then that tank is cleared and your system rinsed thoroughly.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and attacks some fuel-system metals, and neither washes away by itself. That is why it matters more.

Your filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

After that we fire it up and confirm it runs correctly before we go.

Unrun vehicles usually mean a half-hour visit after the moment we arrive. The equipment is fine on a live forecourt, and hushed enough for a driveway after dark.

Payment happens on the day, not upfront, and you receive the paperwork an insurer wants: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

It is worth checking your insurance as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover comes with plenty of policies.
