# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Tilehurst: Why It Occurs

Stop reading a minute when your diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, and call 0333 366 0103.

Around Tilehurst, finding it before the motor turns usually leaves a drain and a thorough flush where it stands.

Reading before the event? In that case the rest explains why it comes about and how to stop it happening at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle: two tanks, two fillers

Diesel goes to the engine — yet plenty of newer diesels driven round Tilehurst and Horncastle carry another liquid too.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into your exhaust stream and cleans it.

There is a filler for each tank.

Some motors keep the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; plenty more place both together under one flap.

The diesel side is filled at the petrol pump all the time.

Far less commonly, the AdBlue side is topped up — normally from a bottle, by a person thinking about where it goes.

It is in the gap that the mistake happens.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Tilehurst: how it takes place

It is hardly ever carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

Hurry comes from the warning. The car warns you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank puts it into limp mode — so the top-up gets done quickly, before work on a driveway off Corwen Road, or on the way home in the car park at The Plough.

New-to-you cars are next, too. Rentals, new vehicles and company vehicles place their fillers differently, and the hand goes for the cap it used on the old one.

A spouted bottle finds no resistance at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. And so the pour, once started, carries on.

Whether it occurs in Little Heath or the middle of Tilehurst, it's the same few seconds.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

A few seconds is all the checks take — so check them before you tip anything, on a drive in Calcot or a forecourt around Tilehurst.

- Colour and lettering: an AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally does not. Go by the cap, not where it sits.

- The size. On many cars the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Plenty of motors say there which fuel goes where.

- In your boot or under the bonnet: that's where your filler sits if it is not by your diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at the nearest station.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

Anywhere in Berkshire the light comes on, this is a routine for that day.

- Stop somewhere level, engine off, with time in hand — never rushing on the side of School Road.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after finding the AdBlue filler and reading it. Daft, perhaps, but it works.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave it on.

- Slowly does it, through the bottle's own spout, until it's full or the bottle runs out.

- Before starting the car, close the cap and look again that your diesel cap was never opened off.

Spot at stage two or three that it has already gone into the diesel side? So stop just there.

Step five is out.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, around Tilehurst?

Short list, then. Top of that: your engine stays unstarted.

The fuel pump starts on many diesels the moment your ignition goes on — and so leave it off.

Topping up with diesel won't weaken it: instead, AdBlue drops to the base of your tank, just where the fuel is drawn from.

On a forecourt — Asda, Shell or any other — the attendants will normally help push your car clear, when you ask.

If you are on your own driveway around Tilehurst, leave it where it sits.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if the engine has already run.

On the M4, under 3 miles from Tilehurst, that means the next exit.

A short hop across Tilehurst is a smaller job than a run towards Oxford, under 25 miles away, so tell us about how far it went.

## Our arrival in Tilehurst, and what happens next

Our van reaches the car anywhere it has come to rest — your own driveway, near Tilehurst Library, or by Park Lane Primary School.

Both the work and the price depend on three answers — what fluid, which amount, and if it has run — so our engineers ask.

That price is given on the call, ahead of any van leaving.

Then that tank is emptied and the fuel system cleaned thoroughly.

With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own.

The fuel filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

We do not leave until it has been started and is running smoothly.

Unrun vehicles mostly need a half-hour visit after arrival. The equipment is safe on a busy filling station, and quiet enough for a residential street after dark.

Your insurer usually wants the engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and you get both once this job is done. Payment comes on the day, with no money upfront.

Wrong-fuel cover is included in many insurance policies — and so use the wait to check yours.
