# Tilsdown: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

Pause here a minute when the diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, then call 0333 366 0103.

A drain and a thorough flush, done just where your car sits around Tilsdown, is usually all it takes if found before the engine runs.

Here before the event? In that case the rest explains how it comes about and what to prevent it ever happening.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel car

Many modern diesels around Summerhayes, as well as Tilsdown, carry on two fluids; your engine gets only your diesel.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Each tank has one filler of its own.

On a lot of motors the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

Diesel goes in on every filling station call-out, week in, week out.

Far less regularly, the AdBlue side is topped up — mostly from a bottle, by a person thinking about where it goes.

Mistakes happen in that gap between the two.

## How AdBlue in the diesel tank takes place around Tilsdown

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a warning from your car, and running out leads to limp mode — hence a hurried top-up, maybe before work off Springfield, or outside Berkeley Arms on the way home that evening.

The old car's filler is where your hand reaches — yet a hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers elsewhere. That is a second factor: an unfamiliar car.

Nothing stops the tip after it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

Whether it happens in Woodfield or the middle of Tilsdown, it is the same few seconds.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Before you tip anything, whether on a driveway in The Quarry or a forecourt around Tilsdown, check these. They take a few seconds.

- Blue and lettering: an AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally does not. Trust the cap, not where it sits.

- The size. On many motors the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- A label inside the fuel flap often shows which fuel goes where, on many vehicles. Look for it.

- In the boot or under the bonnet: that's where your filler is if it's not by the diesel cap, and the handbook tells you which.

- Picking up a hire or company car, say at the car park outside Cam & Dursley? Ask whoever drove the vehicle last before leaving, not when the light comes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever in Gloucestershire that is.

- Turn off once parked — level ground, engine off, and not in a rush beside New Road on the verge.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it does the trick.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave the car on.

- Slowly does it, through the bottle's own spout, until it's full or the bottle runs out.

- Shut the cap, and check again — making sure the diesel cap remained shut throughout. Only then, start the vehicle.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you have already poured into your diesel side.

Don't carry on to stage five.

## Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Tilsdown?

Short order, then. First: your motor remains off.

Don't switch your ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Do not top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where the fuel is sucked from.

At a forecourt — Texaco, Shell or any other — the attendants will usually help roll the vehicle away, if you ask.

Your own driveway in Tilsdown is the place it should stay.

When your motor has been run already, pull over safely then turn it off.

The next exit is the place to come off if you're on the M5, under a mile from Tilsdown.

Distance matters — a short hop across Tilsdown makes a smaller job than heading under 15 miles towards Gloucester — so tell us about how far it went.

## Our arrival in Tilsdown, and what happens next

By Cam Woodfield Infant School, close to Leaf & Ground - Meeting Room or on your own drive: wherever the car has stopped, our technicians come to it.

What liquid was put in, the amount, and if it ran: we ask since those answers set both work and price.

During the phone call itself, you are told the price — ahead of dispatch.

Then the tank is drained and the system purged thoroughly.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why the flush matters more here than with petrol.

Testing comes at the end: before that, clean diesel goes in, and the filter is cleaned or changed as needed.

Your engine is started next and checked to confirm it runs properly, all before our technicians head off.

If the motor has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Payment is on the day, not upfront, and you receive the paperwork your insurer wants: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.

## About Tilsdown itself

Tilsdown is a suburban area in Gloucestershire, situated inland at an elevation of around 101 metres. Tilsdown lies approximately 13 miles from Gloucester and 97 miles from London, placing it in a commuter belt for both the city of Gloucester and the wider South West region. Tilsdown is characterized by its predominantly semi-detached housing stock, which reflects the area's residential development. Tilsdown has a population of around 3484 people, with nearby neighbourhoods including Woodfield, Sandpits, and Cam.

## Tilsdown and Gloucestershire: AdBlue drains across the area

Being a residential suburb, Tilsdown has the same vans as surrounding areas — Sandpits, Cam — all the way through GL postcodes and the surrounding area beyond.

Quickest of all: quote a GL11 6 postcode to the van.

No need to move the car.

Our engineers drain it where it is — a side street near Cam Youth and Community Centre, a lay-by on the way to Sheep Path Woods, a drive.

Ring and ask rather than guessing if you are close to a boundary, or somewhere hard to describe, like the back of Kingdom Hall.

## For Tilsdown drivers, the short version

Before you tip, read the cap.

Petrol in Diesel empties it where it stands, anywhere in Gloucestershire, if AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank regardless — and so leave the car off then phone 0333 366 0103.
