# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Tithe Farm: Why It Occurs and How to Avoid It

Stop reading a minute if the diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, and ring 0333 366 0103.

Caught before your engine runs, it's normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is in Tithe Farm.

Not happened yet? Further down, the page explains the why it happens and the ways to avoid it for good.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle, and its separate tank

Plenty of newer diesels on the roads around Tithe Farm and Bidwell carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your engine.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into your exhaust stream and cleans it.

Different tanks, different fillers.

Other cars keep the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; a lot more have both side by side behind one flap.

At the pump, the diesel side is topped up constantly.

Rarely filled, AdBlue usually goes in out of a bottle, tipped by a driver who must stop and think what cap to use.

That gap is where the mistake lives.

## How AdBlue in your diesel tank occurs around Tithe Farm

It's seldom carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and if it runs out altogether, your vehicle drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Leafields before work, or in the car park outside Chequers on the way home.

The old car's filler is where the hand reaches — yet a rental car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers elsewhere. That's a second thing: an unfamiliar vehicle.

No part stops the tip once it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

Parkside or the middle of Tithe Farm: it is the same few seconds in both.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Check these first, on a forecourt around Tithe Farm or a drive over in Linmere. Seconds, no more.

- Read the cap instead of going by position: AdBlue caps are regularly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel ones usually are not.

- The size. On plenty of motors the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- A label inside the fuel flap often shows which fuel goes where, on plenty of cars. Look for it.

- The handbook. If the filler is not by your diesel cap, it's in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside Leagrave.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

The day the light goes on, anywhere around Bedfordshire, follow this routine.

- Turn off once parked — level ground, motor off, and never in a rush by Sundon Road at the roadside.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once finding the AdBlue filler and read it. Daft, yes, but it does the trick.

- The two behind one flap? Then make sure the lid on the diesel filler is still shut ahead of raising the bottle.

- Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap, then look again — confirm the diesel cap stayed closed throughout. After that, start the vehicle.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you have already poured into the diesel side.

Skip stage five altogether.

## Tithe Farm: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start the engine.

On plenty of diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so don't switch the car on.

Don't top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where your fuel is pulled from.

Ask the attendants to help push the car away from the pump if you are on a forecourt — the Esso, the Gulf or anywhere else.

If you're on your own driveway around Tithe Farm, leave the car where it is.

Already started? Pull over once it is safe, then switch off.

Tithe Farm sits under 3 miles from the M1; on it, take the next junction.

Distance matters — a quick hop across Tithe Farm makes a smaller job than driving under 15 miles to St Albans — so say about how far it went.

## What happens when our engineers arrive in Tithe Farm

The van comes to the car anywhere it stopped — your own driveway, near St Thomas' Meeting House, or outside St Vincent's Catholic Primary School.

Those replies settle this work and the quote, and so our engineers ask what was put in, about how much, and whether it has run.

On the phone call itself, you hear the quote — before anything else.

The fuel system is then purged thoroughly, once your tank is emptied.

With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own.

The filter cleaned or, if it must be, replaced; fresh diesel in; then a test of the car.

We do not leave until it has been fired up and is running smoothly.

Most jobs are finished in roughly half an hour once our technicians arrive, as long as the engine hasn't run — and the pumps our engineers use are safe on a busy forecourt and quiet at night beside a house.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Wrong-fuel cover is included in many insurance policies — and so make use of the wait to check yours.
