# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Tong Street: Why It Occurs

Leave your motor and ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103 now — reading can wait if AdBlue is already in the diesel tank.

Caught before your engine runs, it is normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is in Tong Street.

Not happened yet? Further down, the rest of the page covers the reasons it occurs and the ways to prevent it for good.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel vehicle

No single fluid but two: that's how plenty of newer diesels near Tong Street and Holme run, with diesel feeding the motor.

AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Different tanks, separate fillers.

Plenty of motors have a single flap for the two, whereas others put the AdBlue filler to the boot or under the bonnet.

At the petrol pump, your diesel side is topped up all the time.

Far less commonly, the AdBlue side is topped up — mostly from a bottle, by a person thinking about where it goes.

The slip lives in that gap.

## How AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place in Tong Street

Seldom is it carelessness: normally three things coincide.

Hurry comes from the warning. The vehicle warns you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank puts it into limp mode — so the top-up gets done quickly, before work on a driveway off John Street, or heading home in the car park outside The Holme Lane.

The old car's cap is where the hand reaches — yet a rental car, a new vehicle or a company car keeps the fillers somewhere else. That's a second factor: a strange car.

No part halts the tip once it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

Toftshaw Moor or the middle of Tong Street: it takes the same few seconds either way.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Whether a Tong Street forecourt or a drive over in Bierley, take a few seconds on these before any is poured in.

- Check the cap instead of going by where it sits: AdBlue caps are often blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps usually are not.

- Check the size: the smaller filler neck is, on plenty of motors, the AdBlue one.

- A label inside your fuel flap frequently says which fuel goes where, on many vehicles. Look for it.

- In your boot or under the bonnet: that's where your filler is if it's not by the diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- The previous driver will know. Check as you collect a rental or company car — from Low Moor's car park, perhaps — rather than when the warning appears.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever across West Yorkshire that is.

- Stop on level, engine off, with time to spare — never hurried on the side of Holme Lane.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after finding the AdBlue filler and read it. Silly, perhaps, yet it works.

- Both behind a single flap? So confirm the lid on the diesel side stays shut ahead of raising the bottle.

- Stop once that tank is topped up or the bottle is empty; until then, tip gently through the built-in spout.

- Shut the cap, and check once more — confirm your diesel filler stayed shut throughout. After that, start the vehicle.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Don't carry on to step five.

## Tong Street: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start the engine.

Don't switch the ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Thinning it with more diesel won't work, because AdBlue settles to the bottom instead of mixing — and that's where the fuel is pulled from.

The staff at Esso, Asda or any forecourt will usually help pushing the car away if you ask.

Your own drive in Tong Street is the place it should stay.

Already run? Pull over once it's safe, then switch off.

Leave the M62 — under 3 miles out of Tong Street — at the next junction.

Roughly how far did it go? Crossing Tong Street is less work than a trip of under 3 miles towards Bradford, so say.

## Our arrival around Tong Street, and what takes place next

Our engineers come to the vehicle wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside Ryecroft Primary Academy, close to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints or on your own drive.

Which liquid went in, the amount, and if it ran: we ask since those replies set the work and price.

That price is given over the phone, ahead of any van leaving.

Then the tank is emptied and your system flushed thoroughly.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why that matters more here than with petrol.

After the fuel filter has been flushed — or renewed, where needed — clean diesel is added, and then the vehicle gets tested.

Before leaving, our engineers start the car and make sure that it is running smoothly.

If your motor has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Your insurer will ask for the engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and you get both once the job is done. Payment is on the day, with no money upfront.

It's worth checking your policy while we travel to you: misfuelling cover is included with many policies.

We drain it where it is — a side street near Elim Pentecostal Church, a lay-by on the way to Pit Hill Park, a driveway.

Assuming won't help behind St Columba's Catholic Church, close to a border, or anywhere hard to describe; ring and check.

## For Tong Street drivers, the short version

Read the cap before you pour.

If AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank anyway, leave it off and ring 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel empties it where it stands, anywhere in West Yorkshire.
