# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Top of Heap: Why It Happens

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the motor and your ignition off then call 0333 366 0103.

Usually, if the motor has not run, it's emptied and thoroughly purged where your vehicle sits around Top of Heap.

Not happened yet? Below, the page covers the reasons it takes place and the how to avoid it altogether.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel motor need its own filler?

Plenty of newer diesels on the roads around Top of Heap and Broadfield carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the motor.

Your exhaust, not your motor, is where AdBlue ends up: dosed into the fumes to fresh it, from its own tank.

Every tank has a filler of its own.

Other motors keep the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; plenty more have the two together behind one flap.

At the pump, the diesel side is topped up all the time.

Someone who has to stop and think where it goes usually fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less regularly.

That gap is where the slip lives.

## Top of Heap: how AdBlue in the diesel tank takes place

Rarely is it carelessness: usually three things line up.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a message from the vehicle, and running out leads to limp mode — hence a hurried top-up, maybe before work off Heys Lane, perhaps outside The Summit on the way home that evening.

The old car's filler is where your hand reaches — yet a hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers somewhere else. That is a second factor: an unfamiliar motor.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the pour after it has started.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Top of Heap or out in Heady Hill.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Before you pour anything, whether on a driveway in Bottom o th Brow or a forecourt around Top of Heap, check these. They take a few seconds.

- Where it sits can mislead; the cap doesn't. AdBlue caps tend to be blue or bear the name "AdBlue" — diesel caps usually do not.

- The size. On plenty of vehicles the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- Open the filler flap and check for a label — plenty of vehicles show which goes in which inlet right there.

- Can't find it next to the diesel inlet? Then check below the bonnet or inside your boot — the handbook says which.

- Picking up a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park at Castleton? Ask the person who drove the vehicle last before you set off, not once the light goes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

Anywhere across Greater Manchester the light comes on, here is a routine for the day.

- Turn off after you park — flat ground, motor stopped, and never in a rush beside Heady Hill Close on the verge.

- Find the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and say the word "AdBlue" aloud while unscrewing it. It sounds silly. It does the trick.

- The two behind one flap? So confirm the lid on your diesel side is still shut before lifting the bottle.

- Slowly does it, through the bottle's own spout, till it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check a second time. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the vehicle.

Find at stage two or three that it has already gone into your diesel side? So stop right there.

Leave out step five altogether.

## Put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Top of Heap already?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start the motor.

On plenty of diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so do not switch it on.

Do not top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where your fuel is drawn from.

Ask the attendants to help push your car clear of the petrol pump if you are on a forecourt — the Morrisons, the Texaco or somewhere else.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own drive around Top of Heap.

Where the engine has run by now, stop somewhere safe and turn the car off.

The next exit is the place to come off when you are on the M66, under 3 miles from Top of Heap.

A short hop across Top of Heap is a smaller job than a run towards Manchester, under 10 miles away, and so tell us roughly how far it went.

## When our engineers turn up in Top of Heap, what occurs?

Our engineers come to your car wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside St Margaret's Church of England Primary School, near St Margaret or on your own drive.

Our technicians ask what got in, about how much, and whether it has run, because those answers settle the work and the quote.

No one sets off before you've had our price by phone.

Draining your tank comes next, then a thorough flush of your system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own — which is why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol.

A test is at the end: before that, clean diesel is added, and the fuel filter is flushed or replaced if necessary.

Next we fire it up and confirm it runs correctly before we go.

Most jobs are done in about half an hour once our engineers arrive, provided your motor has not run — and the pumps we use are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet at night outside a house.

Your insurer will ask for an engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and both are yours once the job is done. Payment comes on the day, with no money upfront.

While we travel, take a look at your policy; many include cover for misfuelling.
