# AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Toppings? Keep It Switched Off

AdBlue in your diesel tank? Then leave the motor off — and your ignition as well.

AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

As it is water-based, it won't burn and never combines with diesel; damage only starts when the pump begins drawing it.

If the engine has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally emptied and carefully cleaned where the vehicle sits around Toppings.

Before you do anything else, ring 0333 366 0103.

## Toppings, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do at once

Things to do:

- Remove the keys, and that prevents anyone switching the power on.

- Close to moving traffic? Then put the hazards on.

- Which fluid, and about how much amount? Hang on to the bottle or the till receipt, and our engineers can know.

- Ring us from where you are. A postcode starting BL7 9, or the name of the closest street, brings our van to you without a search.

Things not to do:

- Not even briefly, and not to roll your car: the motor remains off.

- Your ignition stays off: on many diesels, turning it on is enough to start your fuel pump.

- AdBlue does not dilute in diesel — it separates out — so adding more diesel won't weaken it.

- Any driving at all is best avoided, even a short stretch down Lords Stile Lane.

- Don't try to drain it yourself by the kerbside.

Rolling the car away from the pumps is a job for attendants to help with, whichever Toppings forecourt you are on, the BP included.

Stopped on your own driveway? Then it stays exactly where it is.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

The motor is not what AdBlue is made for; the exhaust is.

From a separate reservoir it is fed straight to your exhaust, cleaning what your engine emits.

A fuel pump is not designed to cope with it, and AdBlue was never intended to go through one.

Tipped in with your diesel, it keeps separate instead of blending — entirely different from fuel.

It is heavier than diesel, so it sinks and collects at the bottom of the tank, which is where the pickup pulls fuel from.

A motor topped up on a drive in Eagley Bank overnight and left unstarted is the simple case. Nothing has pulled the AdBlue up so far — but once the motor turns, that is what goes first, directly from the bottom of the tank.

From there it causes two kinds of damage.

It attacks some metals found in fuel components, attacking whatever it reaches until it is cleared completely. And when the water evaporates, the urea turns into crystals that block filters and lodge in narrow channels.

A car left standing around Toppings with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue only in its tank isn't.

Water protects nothing. The injection pump and every injector depend on diesel flowing past them, so the water part harms them in its own right.

## AdBlue in a diesel: why it is commonly worse than petrol

Put petrol in a diesel at the Morrisons and you have an issue of thin fuel.

Harm just comes from running on it. Mixed into your diesel and left inside your tank, it causes nothing.

AdBlue in a diesel is a different problem: not thin fuel, yet no fuel at all.

Since it doesn't burn, running it through is not an option.

Nor can it be watered down, since it separates again — and the next fill won't rinse away deposits or corrosion. So the flush matters more with AdBlue, and turning the key "to see", in the centre of Toppings or out in Dunscar, does more harm than nearly any other mistake.

The same good news applies as with petrol.

Anywhere around Greater Manchester your vehicle has stopped, an unstarted motor leaves the AdBlue still in the reservoir: the simplest bit of a fuel system to clear.

## How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank around Toppings?

After dark, two caps together — the AdBlue cap and the diesel cap, now and then behind one flap — can appear the same. Nobody intends it; many designs allow it.

Mostly it takes place with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the drive, not at the pump.

Mostly, it occurs in one of a few familiar ways.

The refill gets rushed outside Eagley Junior School, after the dash flashed with a warning while the kids were taken in.

A driver pours the container in outside their house, just off Darwen Road, as the day ends.

Or a driver new to that flap tops up your vehicle after dark, stopped in the car park by The Sportsmans.

The least familiar cars see it the most — rentals, brand-new cars, company cars, and the other vehicle of a home with both fuel types.

Wherever you are in Toppings or the remainder of Greater Manchester, it's the same mistake and the same first answer: leave the car off.

## Already started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Toppings?

Then the AdBlue has left that tank.

The fuel filter and lines have had it pulled along, and any running takes it on to the injection pump and every injector.

You may see your engine running roughly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, perhaps on the way back from Sharples Park or halfway across Toppings.

Once safe, stop and turn it off — without turning it on again to see.

Each start pulls more of it through.

Leave the M66, under 5 miles from Toppings, at the first junction and park somewhere safe, not carrying on.

Hopping across Toppings to the car park by Cornerstone Baptist Church is one thing; heading for Salford, under 15 miles away, is something else, because each mile pushes the AdBlue further in. So distance counts.

Roughly how far had it come? Tell us.

Our engineers do all of the rinsing where the car has ended up, and once the motor has been run there is more of it.

Caught quickly, it very rarely leaves lasting damage.

## What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve around Toppings?

A road beside St John the Evangelist, a drive, a layby or a forecourt: wherever the vehicle has come to rest in Toppings, we come to it.

What was put in, roughly how much, plus whether your motor has been run: our engineers check before all else, because those shape the work.

On the spot, the tank is then drained, and both the contaminated diesel and the urea come out at once.

The fuel system is purged thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what it leaves behind does not rinse out on its own.

The fuel filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

If your motor hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once our technicians arrive.

The pumps are explosion-proof, fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

New diesel goes in to prime the system, and that's the final step.

Whether it's a parking bay outside Bromley Cross or a drive around Toppings, that is where we fire it up and you drive off.

It is checked on fresh diesel to confirm it runs smoothly before we head off.

Our engineers do it all wherever the vehicle has stopped, and it never needs to go to a garage.

Insurers ask for a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and you get both afterwards.

## About Toppings itself

Toppings is a suburban area in Greater Manchester, situated near the River Irwell and characterised by semi-detached housing. Toppings sits at an elevation of 152 metres, approximately 10.5 miles from Salford and near the communities of Bromley Cross, Eagley, and Cox Green. Toppings is home to around 4739 residents, who enjoy a relatively quiet riverside setting within the larger North West region.

## Toppings and Greater Manchester: AdBlue drains across the area

Over the BL postcode area, the vans answering AdBlue call-outs around Toppings reach most of Greater Manchester as well, Bromley Cross, Eagley and Cox Green included.

Assuming won't help close to a county line or anywhere hard to describe; ring and check.

Anywhere the vehicle sits — a driveway at home, a side street, a car park, a forecourt — our technicians drain it on the spot, and there's no need to bring it to us; that suits Toppings, a residential suburb, well.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Toppings: the cost of fixing it

Not one single figure would be fair, because every job is different.

The cost shifts first with how long, if at all, your engine has been running, and next with the quantity of AdBlue that got in. After that it rests on where the vehicle is and whether a technician can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight spot behind Turton Sports Centre.

That is why every call from Toppings starts with the same three questions, asked before giving a figure, not after: what got in, how much, and whether it's run.

Those answers shrink the range right down to a single number.

Quoted on the call before the engineer heads out, it is paid for that day — card or phone, nothing in advance.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours while we are on the way.

## Still alongside your car in Toppings?

Then the most useful thing you can do is nothing to your car.

Ignition off, motor off, keys out.

Phone 0333 366 0103 then tell us it's AdBlue, about how much, and whether it has run. Petrol in Diesel takes it from there, around Toppings or anywhere around Greater Manchester.
