# AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Torbay? Keep It Switched Off

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, your ignition stays off and so does your engine.

Water with urea dissolved in it: that is AdBlue.

The trouble starts once it is pulled through your lines — it will not burn, and it will not blend with diesel.

A drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around Torbay, is usually all AdBlue in a diesel tank needs — if it is caught before the motor has run.

Nothing comes before ringing 0333 366 0103.

## Those opening minutes: AdBlue in your diesel tank around Torbay

Do:

- So nobody can switch the ignition on, take the keys out.

- Put the hazard lights on if you're at all close to moving traffic.

- The empty bottle or the receipt tells us the product and the quantity, so don't throw it away.

- Give us a postcode starting TQ3 2, or whatever street lies nearest, and the van finds you straight — so call from wherever you are.

Do not do these:

- Shifting the vehicle even a short way is no reason to fire up the motor.

- Switching the key to ignition by itself starts your pump running on plenty of diesels. Skip it.

- Do not top up with diesel to dilute it. AdBlue does not dilute in diesel; it separates out.

- Leave the vehicle where it is rather than driving it anywhere, even a short stretch up Marine Gardens.

- No draining it yourself, at all, on the verge.

Moving the vehicle away from the pumps is a job for staff to help with, whichever Torbay forecourt you are on, the Texaco or any other.

At home, the car remains just as it was left.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

The engine isn't what AdBlue is made for; your exhaust is.

Kept in a separate tank, it is squirted into the exhaust stream to treat the fumes.

A fuel pump is not designed to take it, and AdBlue was never intended to go through one.

Inside a diesel tank it acts really differently from fuel. It does not mix in.

It is heavier than diesel, and so it sinks and collects at the bottom of that tank, which is where the pickup sucks fuel from.

A car filled on a drive in Shorton overnight and not started since counts as the simple case. Nothing has pulled the AdBlue up yet — but once your engine turns, that's what is pulled first, straight from the bottom of that tank.

Two kinds of damage come from there.

Crystals and corrosion. As the water dries, it leaves urea that crystallises in filters and tiny channels; meanwhile, since it attacks certain metals, every part it reaches suffers for as long as it stays in there.

By daybreak, a vehicle sitting around Torbay with AdBlue in its lines gets worse; if it's just inside your tank, it doesn't.

Diesel lubricates the injection pump and every injector as it flows; water offers none of that, which is a second kind of damage.

## AdBlue in a diesel: why it's frequently worse than petrol

Petrol put into a diesel on Shell's forecourt makes your fuel watery — that is the main problem.

It mixes with the diesel, and while it's in your tank it does no harm; the damage comes from running the engine on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is an issue of the wrong substance altogether.

Because it doesn't burn, running it through isn't an option.

Whether the car sits in Livermead or the heart of Torbay, turning it over "to see" does more harm with AdBlue than almost any other slip, and the flush counts for more. Why: it won't remain mixed, and so watering it down is impossible; and deposits and corrosion outlast the next tankful.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

Anywhere across Devon your vehicle has stopped, an unrun engine means the AdBlue still inside the reservoir: the simplest bit of a fuel system to clear.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Torbay: how it ends up there

Many cars place the AdBlue filler alongside the diesel one, occasionally under a single flap, and after dark the two can look the same. No one intends it.

It usually takes place outside the house, from a container grabbed en route home, not at the filling station.

Mostly, it occurs in one of a couple of familiar ways.

Midway through the drop-off, the dashboard warns, and outside Oldway Primary School the refill is hurried.

A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Marine Drive.

Or the car is topped up in the car park outside The Embassy Tavern, in poor light, by somebody who has never opened that flap before.

It comes up most in a rental, a new motor, a fleet motor, or the other car in a family with both fuel types — the cars people know the least.

Wherever across Devon, Torbay as well, the slip does not change, and neither does the first step: keep it off.

## Already started the motor with AdBlue in your diesel tank in Torbay?

In that case, the AdBlue is no longer inside your tank.

Via your filter, through the pipework, and — with any running time — into the injection pump and every injector: that's how far it has gone.

You may notice the motor running unevenly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, possibly on the way back from Preston Green or halfway across Torbay.

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and don't restart the car to check.

More of that is pulled through with each start.

On the M5, under 25 miles from Torbay, the first junction is where to leave, and anywhere sensible is where to park — not driving on.

Each mile carries the AdBlue further in. That's why crossing Torbay to park near Parkfield and a drive of under 25 miles for Exeter are very different jobs.

Tell us roughly how far it had come.

Wherever the car came to a stop is where all of it gets done, even with more to rinse out once the engine has been running.

Very rarely does it leave long-term damage if it's caught quickly.

## Draining AdBlue in a diesel around Torbay: what it takes

Our engineers come to your car, wherever it has stopped around Torbay: a side street close to Paignton SNU Spiritualist Centre, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt.

The job rests on three replies, and our engineers ask for before all else — which fluid got in, the amount, and whether your motor has turned over.

The contaminated diesel and the urea leave as one when the tank is emptied, right there.

With AdBlue, more so than with petrol, flushing matters: the fuel system is flushed all the way through because what remains will not wash out unaided.

The fuel filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the car is tested.

If your motor hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once our technicians arrive.

Explosion-proof pumps mean a live forecourt sensible to work on, and they're quiet enough not to disturb the neighbours at night.

The final step is to bleed the fuel system on clean diesel.

Then our technicians start the engine and you set off, whether from a parking space at Paignton or a driveway in Torbay.

The test before our engineers head off is that it runs correctly on new diesel.

No workshop is needed at any stage, with the whole job done then and there.

You get a VAT invoice and an engineer report after that, which is what insurers want.

## About Torbay itself

Torbay is a coastal locality in Devon, situated near the towns of Paignton and Preston, with Hollicombe to the north. Torbay has a relatively low elevation of around 3 metres above sea level, reflecting its seaside location. Torbay is characterized by a high proportion of flat housing, which is typical of many coastal areas in the South West. Torbay is approximately 19 miles south of Exeter and around 166 miles west of London.

## AdBlue drains across Devon, Torbay included

AdBlue call-outs in Torbay go to teams that cover the towns around it — Preston, Hollicombe as well as Paignton — and most of Devon beyond, throughout TQ postcodes.

Ring and ask instead of guessing if you're close to a border, or somewhere awkward to pin down.

No towing is needed. In Torbay, a coastal area, a mobile service works: your vehicle is emptied on the spot, be it in a drive, a side street, a car park or a forecourt.

## What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right in Torbay

There's no honest single price, because the jobs aren't the same.

What moves the price is, first of all, whether the motor has run and for how long; then how much AdBlue was put in; and then where the vehicle is and whether a technician can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight gap behind St. Paul's Church.

What was put in, what quantity, plus if the engine ran: each Torbay call begins by asking exactly those, ahead of a quote, not afterwards.

Given those replies, the range shrinks to one fixed number.

Our price is quoted on the call, before a van sets off; payment comes on the day, by card or over the phone, and nothing upfront.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.

## In Torbay and still alongside your car?

Then, the best thing to do with the vehicle is to not touch it.

Keys out, motor off, ignition off.

Phone 0333 366 0103 and tell us it is AdBlue, roughly how much, and whether it has run. Petrol in Diesel takes it from there, around Torbay or anywhere across Devon.
